So, I'm going to see these guys in action in April with Velnias, but I have no idea what to expect. I was heavily into Agalloch some years ago, but now I only listen to them from time to time, when I bought the ticket for the show it was kind of an impulse buy.

So what are you guys experiences with Agalloch live? What kind of show should I expect? And if anyone has seen Velnias too, are they good live too?

I haven't heard anything bad about Agalloch's shows, I just want to know what to expect.

Thanks in advance!

I saw Agalloch live around a year ago, I think, and it was spectacular! Many years ago, the band was criticized for subpar live shows, and since then they responded by really making their performances tight and exciting.

Expect atmosphere, crowd engagement, some banter, classiness, and some exciting variations to old favorites. Their live performance of In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion was absolutely beautiful. Their performance of Bloodbirds was out of this world.

I would be very excited!

That sounds great! I think it's awesome when bands add something extra/new to their songs when they play them live, and In the Shadow... and Bloodbirds are some of my favorite songs of theirs, so that definitely makes me even more excited!

April huh, I vividly remember listening to their Live in Cambridge bootleg tape on a cold February day. (Haven't done so this year though) It taught me so much about nature, the cycles of the world and the change of seasons.

They brought the Dead Winter Days back to life.

I had heard some guys criticizing their live performances saying that they were just going through the motions and that there was no energy in their playing, something unexpected if you consider how young (relatively) and well-known the band is. It's been years since then though, so I would assume that they've gotten more stellar and consistent over the years.

They were amazing, saw them last year. I was front row and wasn't disappointed. The sound, the songs and the musicians were really tight. Their setlist was cool too, albeit a lot of songs from their latest album. The atmosphere was really magic too. Don Anderson played Isle of Summer from The Grey with the opener, a neo folk guitarist, it was very cool.

Wow Metantoine, that sounds awesome! Not too crazy about their latest album, yet. Do you remember what songs they played, that's not from MOTS?

I saw them twice in Portland, one of those being an amazing 2 hour set. Played stuff from every era and it was very energetic and engaging. You will not be disappointed!

Yeah, that setlist isn't bad at all! I hope I'll be getting more into the new album before going to the gig though.

Thanks to everyone who has responded, keep them coming!

No one has any experience with Velnias? I haven't even listened to their music and I don't know if I'll get around to doing so.

They did not use autotune at either gig.

I've seen Agalloch twice, and thought they put on a good show. As mentioned before, they were good at touching on most of their back catalouge, which I appreciated. I wouldn't put either performance in my top concerts of all time by any means, but they were solid, and I enjoyed myself. I'm sure you'll have good time.

I've also seen Velnias twice. They're 'Sovreign Nocturnal' release I've enjoyed since picking it up, but the material really comes to life in concert. The volume and sonic vibration really help to get you in tune with the music (or so I've found). I'd definitely like to see them again.

Enjoy the show!

That sounds interesting, maybe I should listen to Velnias' album soon then, thanks for your respond!

Even the encore songs are already available to the public? Maybe they'll change them that day, you know, play "Not Unlike the Waves" or "But a Ghost in Your Arms" instead. Pale Companion is so overplayed.

Also saw them a year and a half ago. Was a very good show. Tight and good sound. If you enjoy the band, it's worth seeing for sure. FWIW, they have a bunch of live clips on YouTube you can check out to see what you're in for!

Agalloch is definitely a band I want to see before I die. From what I hear they don't play very much, but when they do its amazing. I would love to hear "In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion" "Bloodbirds" and "Limbs" live.

The Velnais album, which I have reviewed for this site, isn't really all that special. Its not bad, its just average and they don't really do anything that hasn't been done by countless other bands. There is way better Cascadian black metal (such as Skagos, L'acephale ect..)

I am also seing them on this monday and am quite excited, for both Agalloch and Velnias. I heard Velnias just recently and they arent bad at all, two or three listens required, to realize the album is quite great and their demo is viable aswell, tho I don't know if they will play any material that is on the demo.

Both times I saw them his vocals were excellent, that includes the 2 hour set in Portland for the Marrow release party.

I've seen them twice, once on the Mantle tour and once on the Marrow tour. Both shows we're excellent. In general they are heavier live. They tend to "metalize" a lot of the acoustic sections, which makes for a unique expierience. For example, when they play "In the Shadow of our Pale Companion", the "I walked down to a river..." part is actually the heaviest part of the whole song!

Anyway, even if you're just a casual fan I think you will enjoy it.

So jealous of everybody in Europe getting to see this band.

I watched their live DVD a while back, they're pretty spectacular.

They're getting better and better each tour. Now that the band members live closer together, they have more time to rehearse I'm sure.

Sadly just missed these guys on their Euro tour. Saw them in LA a couple years ago, and it was very nice. I still think they're albums edge out the live show a bit, but from YouTube clips I've checked out at Roadburn, they seem to be getting better and better live.

I totally agree, I've only seen them once but they're definitely a killer live act. They have a lot of candles and animal skulls and it sets the atmosphere really well.
