I'm not sure why every other SOP thread is locked, but here we go again with another.

"A short teaser with dry tracks showing off a segment of the new material in progress"

If you haven't heard SOP are currently recording the new material for the next album. I'm quite looking forward to this. I've grown away from a lot of tech death, but SOP has remained on my rotation. There is a lot of wankery, if you may, going on with most of this band's material, but it is a by-product of the writing and not just for sake of needless technical playing.

Honest opinion, it sounds like circus music to me. I don't see why the distortion is necessary - they are losing a whole section of their audience comprising circus attendees.

Sounds too happy to be death metal, wankery is okay but it has to be subtle and these guys aren't too strong on it. Not that bad though.

I dig it. I've always like Spawn of Possession, but I totally see what the other two people said about it sounding like circus music (it kinda does in spots) and it's too happy sounding (it is).

But I'd still buy it.

Yeah, I have to agree on the circus music part... I did enjoy Noctambulant though, so I will give this a listen whenever it comes out.

"Look at me! I can hit notes fast!" seriously, that was dull. I'm not sure that even qualifies as metal, except in the broadest, most technical sense.

I'm with SLK on this one. I've always enjoyed their songwriting, despite the amount of wankery going on in their music. This teaser seems nothing more nothing less than your usual SOP song, so I can't see any wrong in it. I understand people disliking this kind of music but going as far as calling it "not metal" is just wrong. This is old Atheist on speed with added wankery.

Thumbs down on most tech-death. Necrophagist and maybe old Aborted is good though.

Eh... I disagree with comments like these a lot. It's fair if you don't like the music, but there is a lot of melody to be found in the music and it's not a bunch of random notes. All of those notes are very purposely played. I'm not saying that you're wrong to dislike it, but this entire sentiment that something fast and technical HAS to be wankery was old a long time ago. No offense to you, but it tweaks me sometimes. I'm not even the biggest fan of this teaser, but I hardly would call it "a bunch of notes played really fast."

Yup...Sounds like spawn of possession. I'm excited to hear the rest of the album, best tech death band of all time.

Hmmm, actually think it's pretty good. Went back to my library and saw that I didn't like their earlier stuff too much but gave it another listen and I'm really liking Noctambulant.

Not that I ever actually called it "random". :P and I don't mind technically proficient music, not at all, but I do mind stuff like this or Necrophagist that seems fast and overly technical for its own sake. That's what makes it "wankery". I doubt anyone likes guitar masturbation (but then again, what do I know), but that's not nearly the same as being technical, nor do I feel that metal should forgo the riffs, which bands like this often seem to have a tendency to do. And that's why it's really dull, barely-metal. It might technically have the riffs and melodies needed to be classified as such, but it seems more a bi-product or secondary priority of writing that's really just intended to be technical. Rather than "technical riffs", these guys seem more intent on writing "technical music... with some riffs." But if you like it, more power to you I guess.

Tech-wank metal! I dig this stuff in really, really small doses. That being said, Cabinet is a fucking awesome album. I can deal with that one in a little bit bigger of a dose.

I won't say the execution isn't impressive to me, it must take a lot of time and effort to put together riffs like that. Of the artistry of it, I'm far less certain.

When will all tech death bands learn how important it is to have a rhythmic background? Rhythm is the spine of music. That excerpt of the upcoming SoP has none of it, that's the reason it sounds like a circus gallop. Gorguts are gods of rhythm. They sure don't have that arpeggio earfuck thing in their music. They rather decorate the music by playing around with syncopation and tempo changes. Deforming the rhythms sounds like a legit term for it.

New Spawn of Possession song.

Spawn of Possession - Where Angels Go Demons Follow
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=av3MdFvJDKg

I really liked it, it has a bit of a thrashy vibe to it. My only problem is how 'scratchy' the guitars sound. Not my favorite production job, but it gets the job done.

This is a bunch of cock stroking of instruments and I anticipate all of the songs on the album will sound similarly. Noctambulant was above average melodic metal with exceptionally arranged songs, but it was shredding for the sake of shredding. By comparison, Cabinet was technical and brutal with a nice dark vibe.

The cover to the new album looks like something I'd see in a fucking video game. Like a cross between Skyrim and Fallout New Las Vegas. Lame.

I like some of Spawn of Possession's stuff, they're one of the few really wanky bands that I can still enjoy. Will definitely be checking out the new stuff when it comes out.

Also, this song is boss. It's technical and catchy.

SoP's Cabinet was much better than the second one if you ask me. And I like how the production was almost mechanical like, and fit the vibe of the music. I found their follow up album to be a bit dull, and it seemed pretty short at the time. I hope the new one is better.

Another new song:Bodiless Sleeper. Below that is a video of Erlend Caspersen killing it, as usual, on the bass to the song.

this is actually the only spawn of possession album i own/have heard. never really investigated them much further, and unfortunately my tastes nowadays have kind of grown away from tech stuff.

New songs is alright, but seriously, why does just about every "riff" from a technical death metal band sound like the random honking of angry motorists stuck in a New York traffic jam at high noon?

I was watching the lyric video and found the lyrics to be damn good and I was expecting them to build to some otherworldly conclusion, but then it didn't.

Why is it when I click on any thread involving Tech Death, I can expect to read the same complaints and negative opinions over and over again? It's like everyone is copying off each others term papers...

Or maybe it's because people who listen to music more based on good song structure a catchiness have similar complaints about tech death??

i actually found that rather watchable, and before I knew it I'd checked out the rest of the dude's vids. As far as music I actually enjoy it doesn't deliver, but maaan does that stuff look hard to play. It gets a pass mark solely because of the wow factor.

The newest song was the worst of the three; truly forgettable wank. In fact, the first song was my favourite. Bodiless Sleeper was a cool groover, but not much else.

What I don't like about tech death is the lack of repetition. I don't like latter era gorguts, but they have riffs and at least they repeat stuff. It's nonsensical, technical for the sake of being technical.

I'm the exact opposite. What makes Technical and Progressive music so great is that when there's little to no repetition, the songs have a longer replay value. If a song repeats most of its material 2 or 3 times, it's like you've listened to the same (albeit 2 or 3 times shorter) song 2 or 3 times.

That's why I hate most mainstream so much. I don't hate it because it's popular, I don't hate it because it's accessible, I don't hate it because it's cheesy; I hate it because after only 1 song listen, I'm already sick of it because of all the repetition.

That's ridiculous. Repetition =/= repetitiveness.
