Darker Than Black are on the verge of releasing the debut album from Scotland's Àrsaidh and the sample track on you tube sounds great. Everything about this unknown band remind me of Askival so it could be a new reincarnation of the band? Anyway even if not this is sure to appeal to fans of Askival. One to watch I think, love the cover.

It is indeed the same guy from Askival. Looking forward to this.

Ahh I new it! Thanks for the info, I always had hope Andy would return to this style and here it is in all its glory. Glad to hear he is back.

Very interesting.... I wonder why he felt the need to abandon the Askival moniker as this is indeed very similar. Nevertheless, I am very excited by this news. There isn't much to say that hasn't already been said about the masterpiece that is "Eternity." Hell, I even enjoyed the hell out of that Falloch album.

But anyways this is exciting news, and I'm glad something official has been released since I've already been teased with rumors that he would collaborate with Old Silver Key and resurrect Askival. Both of which never happened.

I liked that significantly more than anything I heard on Eternity. It seemed to be more focused on riffs and didn't get caught up in meandering in the atmosphere.

I'll be looking forward to this.

Im kinda glad nothing came out of his involvement with Old Silver Keys as I had always hoped he would return to music based on his Scottish heritage plus Old Silver Keys did not have a patch on Askival. The art and logo have once again been handled by Kogian art. Askival's logo would have to be a favourite of mine to be honest, but I have to say the new one is not bad all the same. There is definitely a better overall sound on this new release and the drums are much better, real drums this time?

If I remember correctly, Andy said that he felt the music either wasn't right for Askival or just wasn't good enough to fit underneath the Askival Monitor. My mind is a little cloudy about it.

Thanks for the heads up OP, I've been wondering about the fate of Askival and its sole member. Eternity was one of my favorite folk-black releases. The atmosphere hit right home with me, in a way that only a one-man BM band could conjure up. I'll be sure to check it out and give feedback.

Really captures the Scottish landscape and weather perfectly, excellent work by Kogaion Art as ever. Even the you tube video looks cool with the effects used. Hope we get a release date soon.

This sounds very promising and I was swayed by the good artwork too. Though the logo bears very slight resemblances to that 'A Forest of Stars'.

This is good stuff. It sounds like a mix of Askival and Falloch, which in my opinion is a good thing because I enjoyed both bands. Can't wait to pick up the disc.

I was think the same myself earlier while listening to the track, there are some elements of Falloch in the music but much better. I did like the Falloch album but the vocals killed it for me in the end. The record was screaming to use harsh vocals but they never came and I just could not warm to the vocals that were used. This album more than corrects this issue for me.

I liked the use of clean vocals, although I don't blame anyone for not liking them. They are very...emo sounding, for lack of a better term. My one complaint about the Falloch album was the forced yelling/screaming that they threw in a couple tracks. They just sounded bad and out of place, which I don't get because I like Andy's harsh vocals in Askival and he sounds great in Àrsaidh too.

Wow I can't believe how good this is. I love Askival so this return is great. I love hearing music that really embodies Scottish heritage and pride as I have a lot of it myself. Really looking forward to this release.

I heard the album and it's fucking amazing. Much better than Askival in my opinion. I'll write a review for it in the coming month or so!

Ditto, the album is fantastic. I'll have to re-visit Askival so that I can better articulate why I like this new project so much more, but it seems a lot more focused.

So yeah, don't worry guys: the whole album sounds as good as the samples.

Why don't you try the band itself? That's what I did.

Look forward to reading it Tony. Think we can all agree on one thing, this will fucking crush his last work with Falloch, which was an ok album, but over time the vocals totally killed it for me.

Is the new album filled with ambient trash? That was my only problem with Askival.

Nah, not really. It's pretty atmospheric and it has a better cohesion/flow than Askival. Amazing album for sure.

So apparently they're changing the name to "Saor"
From the Facebook page:

"Some important news! After much consideration and conversations with friends and fans, we have decided to re-name the band and release future material under the name 'Saor'. The reason behind this decision is that the majority of people we spoke to were having difficulties with the pronunciation, we were having problems due to the accented "A" online and digitally and we have generally grown to dislike the current name. "

This is actually kind of disappointing to me as I really liked the name and had no trouble pronouncing it. How do you pronounce "Saor" anyways? haha

Haha, yeah I don't get him getting rid of a band name nobody can pronounce, to another name that nobody is sure of how to pronounce.

This is very bad news. I really liked the name, especially its Old Gaelic roots. This new name is just about the most generic thing ever and liked already mentioned, it's not the easiest word in the world to know the correct pronunciation for. This is a stupid, stupid move.

And what with it being Gaellic, it could be pronounced in any way. For example: Tiocfaidh is pronounced "Chucky" essentially.

Also, Saor also has Gaellic roots. Means "free" according to wiktionary, (I'm lazy).

At Least Arsaidh is a little stand out. Just pronouce it Arse-aid and you are pretty close anyways.

Yep.

Has he offered an explanation as to why he decided to ditch Askival in favor of Arsaidh or Soar or whatever? The concepts, themes and music seem to be more of a continuation than a departure from that moniker.

I blame Caspian's review title for this bad move.
