Metallica has announced that the second release on its recently formed label, Blackened Recordings, will be a re-recording of “Kill Em All.”

The band is said to be considering naming the re-recording “Metal Up Your Ass,” the debut’s original working title, but no final decision has been made.

Addressing the reasoning for re-recording the band’s classic debut instead of simply remastering it, drummer Lars Ulrich had this to say:

“The songs on Kill Em All are vintage Metallica, but will benefit so much more from today’s studio and mixing technology. So we decided it would be better to re-record them entirely than release a simple remaster from those old analog recordings. I can’t wait to get in the studio and do these songs justice and give them a polished, modern sound.”

A producer has not yet been chosen for the “Kill Em All” recording sessions.

A release is tentatively being targeted for late 2013.

The re-recording of “Kill Em All” will be the label’s second release. The first release from Blackened Recordings was the live DVD, "Quebec Magnetic," which was released on December 10th, 2012.

Not sure if this is an April Fool's joke or not, but this sounds fucking terrible. Who wants to bet that Greg Fidelman will be the producer and completely annihilate the sound?

Well, that's not uncommon at all. Many people go on 4chan in order to get off.

Bad idea. Metallica hasn't been able to capture what they did in the 80s for several reasons. Maybe their latest material could benefit from a 1983 studio and unaged 1983 bodies.

I would sooner see them rerecord Justice if they had to do one. But this reeks of "bad idea"

Yeah, but it's silly to think they'd still use that.

I know Manowar isn't a great example, but when they re-recorded their first album Battle Hymns the results were disastrous to say the least. Another bad example is Dimmu Borgir when they re-recorded Stormblåst, and that didn't turn out well either.

Even Metallica aren't dense enough to think they can reboot Cliff fucking Burton.

I personally wouldn't mind a re-release. I'm curious to see how the band would play it right now in their careers. It's not a bad idea after all. Plus this is a huge money grab for them. With a re-release name such as "Metal Up Your Ass", imagine all the kiddies spending all their precious monies on this. But then again this could all very well be an April Fool's joke.

Probably a joke, so I won't comment the expected quality of that.

But they did make some cool t-shirts with that (in the 80s or 90s, anyways I knew someone who wore one in the 90s), even though it wasn't used officially as an album:

NO. NO IT WILL NOT.

Yeah, like 'St Anger' and 'Death Magnetic' benefitted so much from them...

I say April Fool's joke. I never understood why a band would re-record a classic album that is just fine the way it is. Last year punk band FEAR released a re-recording of their classic debut album The Record and it was fucking atrocious. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

This. Not even the guys in Metallica have their heads so far up their asses so as to think that they can re-record one of their most beloved classics and get away with it.
