released today, put together by the staff of doom-metal.com, and sanctioned (it seems) by both the band and Peaceville recs...

Yep, this is a very official tribute. Here are some pics:

I'm interested, but just by looking at it I see 2 problems for me:

1. Where are the top bands of the genre? It's hard to get excited when there are no bands like Evoken, Lycus, Mourning Beloveth or Inverloch involved. I hope to be pleasantly surprised, but it would be nice to see some recognizable names.

2. Track choice is a bit too peculiar. 2 songs from "Symphonaire Infernus et Spera Empyrium" and none of them the title track? No "Turn Loose the Swans"? No "The Forever People" and no "Into the Lake of Ghosts" (outrageous, the name is in the title).

Disregarding that, there are lots of interesting things that can be done with the chosen songs, so I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

I don't see anything wrong with the tracklist, seem rather balanced and in such a large amount of songs that the band has it's actually nice to not see everything that'd be expected. I will concur that there are little known bands, but maybe that's the charm of it as well? To be able to find new bands through a tribute to a band you like?!

Seems like a very interesting idea, nice packaging and artwork too.

You're right on all fronts. That post was a gut reaction.

The one thing I find pretty amusing, even on second thought, is the inclusion of both B-sides from Symphonaire without anyone covering the main track. I'll wait for the release of some full tracks to judge.

I'm definitely interested in hearing it. But aside from Omit, the roster of bands who contributed isn't very impressive. It's a shame they couldn't get some bigger names from the genre to contribute.

There are few more teaser videos of this tribute that were released prior to the one from the top post. You can hear more from Camel of Doom and Omit in those:

Established, big bands are probably busy enough running their own music production, and have too little to win by participating in a thing like this. It would be a huge service to the smaller bands if a big name like Evoken decided to contribute a song, but there's very little for someone like Evoken to gain.

Besides that, bands like that are more or less contemporary to My Dying Bride. It makes little sense to make a tribute to a band that developed at the same time; you generally make tribute to bands who were particularly influental to yours. Secondly, established bands have much higher standards for their production, so it would be expensive to contribute. Contributing a cheaply-made recording would be more detrimental to an established band's reputation than anything, whereas a new band can benefit from the exposure even if they're not able to provide a top-end production.

I don't know about other bands of the sort, but Evoken actually participated in a lot of tribute albums over the years. They have tracks on Celtic Frost and Thergothon tribute albums that are both fairly recent, and they made a Paradise Lost cover for self-release.

Fair enough. You might expect them to participate on a compilation like this, then. Still, having been inactive with their own releases for the last 5 years, I'd sooner expect them to be using what time and energy they have for the band working on a follow-up to Atra Mors.

Interesting feedback, thanks.

Actually, though, pretty much everything that's been commented on was deliberate on our part. We weren't looking for famous names, and didn't ask any bands from the obvious Gothic/Death/Doom sphere. The idea was to explore how much further My Dying Bride's influence has reached into the doom underground, and how much quite disparate bands could demonstrate something of that inspiration whilst still keeping their own character.

I would certainly concede that our contributors aren't household names in the wider Metal world, but they are well-enough known in our rather specialist corner of the scene, and most have released several albums of their own already. We invited them all specifically to contribute, and they picked the tracks themselves as being personally significant. This wasn't done cheaply, either: the recordings are almost all pro-studio, or pro-equivalent home studio, and we had the whole package mastered by Greg Chandler at Priory.

Anyway, we're not chasing commercial success - we'd have picked pretty much any genre other than doom, if that was the case! - and we weren't really interested in going over the same expected ground. Sure, we could have tried to hang it off a couple of 'headline names', and attempted to pick their fanbase's pockets as a result - but, really, that's almost the exact opposite of what the album's about.

Thanks!

The teaser video sounds pretty interesting, some tracks look very good while others no so much, but in general my impression has been good and the artwork is very nice and it suits perfectly well MDB´s music.

Just to point out that there only 8 copies left! :O

8 copies left from Bandcamp, mind you: there's a lot more available from doom-metal.com headquarters in England. And as stated on Bandcamp, the copies aren't even there yet and will ship as soon as I receive them myself. As for the two tracks released on Bandcamp: I might actually end up taking them down again because, as it turns out, we only have license for the physical release, so as unlikely as it may seem that I'll run into trouble for uploading 'my' contributions to the tribute, I'd rather not take any unnecessary risks...

You are welcome!

PS. and well if anyone questioned the official status of this release, here is a link to the announcement that was posted on MDB Facebook page.

After checking back with my band mates for opinions, I have indeed removed the tracks from Bandcamp now. Sorry about that - I hate to do it since it means much less exposure for the two projects I'm involved in, but it's just not worth the risk since the legal situation seems vague at best. I'm guessing the whole thing will appear on YouTube sooner or later anyway, though.

There was another MDB tribute a year ago or something, made by MDB offical forum, you can check it here:

https://miresofsorrow.bandcamp.com/albu ... ying-bride
https://miresofsorrow.bandcamp.com/albu ... nus-tracks

I recommend to check the first track - The Cry Of Mankind. It is instrumental version, more focused on piano and stuff, sounding really amazing.

As for topic: there are some neat ideas, but The Crown Of Sympathy with vocals like this sounds like butchering, painful stuff. Torture doom?

Omit is a great band.

I quite liked guitar version of For My Fallen Angel.

there was also A Russian Tribute to My Dying Bride: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... 97D4EAC90A from long ago... and lo-fi. but some of it is touching.

The funiest thing is that there seems to be another Russian tribute in the works right now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INw2-yNu9cg
