Yeah, I wasn't aware of his retardation until last evening and I didn't even pay attention to who I responded since it was a general kind of issue.

Ancestral (Can) - s/t

Image

Canadian death metal somewhat similar to early Gorguts, mixed with some Swedish DM. Heavy stuff with many melodic passages, which usually consist of acoustic guitar and bass. Also there's a piano outro in the last track.

I'm sorry but this doesn't cut it. I'm gonna need band members full names, addresses, license plate numbers, behavioral tendencies, and blood types. TYIA!

You're a stupid faggot. Did you also walk uphill to and from school with an old crate for a lunchbox and two dead groundhogs strapped to your feet "back in your day"?

EDIT: So my post is actually relevant to the discussion, I strongly recommend this overlooked gem:

Image

Despite all the shit this band has taken, their only weak album was Vengeance Ascending (Infinity Through Purification doesn't count because essentially a different band recorded it). While City of the Dead is far from "the best death metal demo ever" as some have dubbed it, they still put together some quality old school US death metal. Heavy on the Immolation and Morbid Angel tip with a touch of (good) Deicide and some awesome leads. Even if he can be a bit imprecise, Aantar Coates has always been one of my favorite drummers simply for his creativity.

Explicit Hate- A View of the Other Side

Only album released (sadly) by this great band. Fairly clear production with some great guitar and vocal work.

Couple recent discoveries of mine from youtube that I did not see mentioned in this thread which surprises me.

Burial - Relinquished Souls (1993)
Image
Very crushing death metal with an awesome groove. THey drew a lot of influence from Death and Massacre and it shows well. Surely one of the best death metal albums from Holland.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FETW8mHb ... re=related

Brutality - Screams of Anguish (1993)
Image
Why the fuck are these guys not mentioned amongst Deicide and Morbid Angel with early Floridan death metal? This is as good as anything coming out of the Floridan scene. Maybe it just wasn't released early enough. Not to far off of Morbid Angel in sound and quite technical.

Edge of Sanity - The Spectral Sorrows (1993 Black Mark Productions)

Awesome Swedish Death Metal, in the vein of early greats such Dismember, Entombed, Grave, etc... Definitely not unknown but maybe slightly forgotten.

Image

Monstrosity -Imperial Doom (1992 Nuclear Blast Records)

Fucking awesome Floridian DM that never broke out of the true underground. Features George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher. IMO his best work.Unfortunately the album is out of print. Again not completely unknown, but classic none the less.

Feretrum - From Far Beyond (1992)
Image
Not sure if this has been posted but I started listening to this one recently. The guitars are very downtuned and filthy sounding playing punishing riffs with nice use of leads, and the vocals are sick growls. I will never understand why bands don't sound like this very much anymore. This is far more brutal and real to me than all those mechanical sounding death/grind outfits with modern production jobs.

Such a shame I hate the vocals as the riffs have an awesome thrashy groove to them with a menacing guitar tone. The vocals just sound like an early representation of slam vocals to me with their growling style that comes out in quick burps.

Yeah, people generally don't like the vocals on this release. It remains nevertheless quite important. This could be the first death metal full-length to come out of Belgium (I haven't checked) and vocals aside, I think it's quite good and qualifies as a real gem.

Anyone know more of earlier (pre-1991) Belgian DM?

Well there's Exoto, who were formed in 1989, as well as Massacra Noise. According to the archives there are several other Belgian death metal bands who put out CDs by at least 1990.

Listening to the album now, and DAMN this is good stuff. I've had it for a while but never really listened to it. Killer stuff.

Here's a few more releases that I like:

Cemetary - An Evil Shade of Grey
Image
One of my favorite Swedish albums. It sounds very Swedish but it doesn't really sound all too familiar to any other band. There are great thrashy riffs mixed with doomy atmospheric sections.

Merciless - The Awakening
Image
An awesome Death/Thrash album from Sweden. Sounds like pure thrash at times but the intense vocals put this in the Death metal realm for me.

Sororicide - The Entity
Image
Intense death metal from Iceland. Due to the nonexistant metal scene the band came from on Iceland, there are no local influences on this. It sounds incredibly dark and has a lot of convulted melodies and twisted guitar riffs.

How could I forget THIS little gem:

[img]Desecrator - Subconscious Release[/mg]

The art is done by Dan Seagrave, and I personally think it's one of his strangest looking covers. This album is disgustingly rare, and I've only been able to find 1 or 2 blogs with a download. The downloads don't even have the same track times as the metal-archives entry so I don't know what to believe. But anyway, British death metal with more sick vocals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5VEir7O4uU , the quality is bad but you get the point.

I discovered this just now through random youtube browsing and this is excellent. Got A Nihilist like groove going on with the riffs and I love the vocals. I also like this style of cover art.

Atheist, now I'm not sure how known is Atheist in the death metal "community", sicne I'm not into detah myself (and maybe as such I should get away from this topic). I think I didn't see them here, so I'm going to go ahead and "put them up".

Atheist is a techinical olds school death metal band. They released a couple of albums and I always had a feeling they were underrated. They tend to be techinical at the beging of their songs but they get pretty detah later.

Atheist - Piece of Time

Other bands I know are Solstice and Massacre but they're both mentioned, so...

Atheist is extremely popular in the death metal community as in the metal community in general. I'd say pretty much everyone here knows of them already, but they're enjoyable enough that your mention of them gets a tip of the hat from me.

Atheist is a legend in the death metal scene. Piece of Time and Unquestionable Presence are classics.

I would say many of the users here on metal archives are already familiar and experienced with old school metal.

If anyone is not familiar with the finnish death metal scene, Start with Convulse or Putrid, that's the only thing at top of my head for now.

A lot of excellent recommendations in this thread. I second the Gutted, Deteriorate, Killing Addiction, and Morpheus Descends recommendations!!!

Check out Horror of Horrors - Sounds of Eerie
Image

Overall mid paced fresh death metal witth clear thrash infludence. If you like Burial, Mortal Decay, Incantation, Baphomet, check these guys out.

My other recommendation would have to be Immortal Suffering -
Images of Horror. They have a split with Insatanity. These guys as well as Pyrexia are the progenitors of Slam and Brutal death metal. If you are a fan of Internal Bleeding, Suffocation, or Pyrexia check these guys out.

Hey, I remember there being some talk of Xenomorph in this thread.

I just thought I would point out that, due to a spelling mistake, there are copies (I don't know how many) of Empyreal Regimes available for $17.25 on Gemm here: http://gemm.com/item/XENOMORPH/EMPYBEAL ... 290968890/

I don't know anything about this seller, but from their history they look legitimate. I just thought I would spread a little joy for the avid OSDM fan searching for affordable rare releases. Enjoy it!
