I just bought a very neat compilation from NWN! called "No Speed Limit". It's 8 tapes of various Canadian thrash/speed bands from back in the day. The big seller for me was a copy of the Voivod live demo "No Speed Limit", but there's a bunch of other bands I'm excited to check out. Vensor looks like KISS by way of Venom. I think it's going to be a lot of fun to dig into.

Also grabbed Ares Kingdom's debut. I've been re-obsessing over Incendiary lately and decided it was time to check the debut. Such a cool band to me. I'm very enamored of Chuck Keller. Another one of those dudes who never lost the flame or turned lame. AK is like Order from Chaos filtered through years of experience and a love of trad metal.

Can't wait!

*Québec thrash/speed metal! :-D :-D "Essential Quebec Metal Demo Tapes" as written on the cover art.
Yeah, I'd like to get this too, the package looks great too. Not sure if they're all essential demos though since bands like Voor are frankly terrible but eh, it's very cool nonetheless.

Ares Kingdom are indeed awesome.

Yeah I'm not expecting every band to blow me away. I just love old time capsule-y releases like this. Of course the packaging rules Annick put the whole thing together! I'll be happy if the Voivod live recording isn't complete garbage and if there's at least one cool band in there that I never would have heard otherwise.

Eclipse - Armageddonize

Probably the best hard rock album of the year.

4 out of my order of 5 CDs from grooves-inc. arrived today:
Spoiler: show
Image

Manowar - Battle Hymns
Manowar - Into Glory Ride
Thunderstorm - Faithless Soul
Thunderstorm - As We Die Alone

At first I didn't like Battle Hymns much, but I wanted to persevere with it, because Dark Avenger and the title track are just such great songs. I thought all the other songs except William's Tale sounded like crappy and not very heavy 70s rock. But today I enjoyed all the tracks. I had a similar slow start with Into Glory Ride, but I never thought it was as bad as I thought Battle Hymns was at first.

These are my first two Thunderstorm CDs, despite me being interested in the band pretty much right when I first started exploring the doom metal genre some 12-13 years ago.

"Ascension Lost," by Thulcandra - It was a great listen the first time through, but then it kinda got stale. :( Still, a pretty good take on melodic black metal.
I also got "Opus Nocturne," "Plague Angel," and "Those of the Unlight" by Marduk a while back, and I freakin' love 'em! I'm thinking about getting "Frontschwein," is it good?

Well I didn't expect this, my Razor reissues from Relapse arrived in the mail today. They're not even supposed to be out until the 5th, so I thought I'd get mine later next week or something. They sound AMAZING. I've got plenty more stuff to report here, but I just wanted to gush about these albums in particular.

I just picked up

Satan's Almighty Penis - Pulsing Feral Spire (Weird as fuck black metal, pretty standard, but not even close to standard at the same time. Beauty)
Bound And Gagged - Fornicate The Gutted (Bree. Bree times infinity. Basic brutal death, fun.)
Priestess - Hello Master (Stoner Rock. Easily fits the stoner rock mood)
Panzerchrist - Battalion Beast (Aggressive black/death, that doesn't stand out, but is nice regardless)
Bal-Sagoth - Atlantis Ascendant (The first symphonic anything I've REALLY liked. Wow.)
Kvelertak - Meir (I don't know what this is or how to classify it. Hardcore punk black metal? Solid though)

stack #1 down, 3 to go ha ha some of this stuff has been sitting here for 2 weeks

Bongzilla - Stash [US, quality sludge]
Iron Monkey - Iron Monkey [US, original, totally killer!]
Isis - The Red Sea [US, I really dig this but it has a meaty scratch, so yeah] new to Discogs
Mastodon - Lifesblood [US, whoah! hard to believe Mastodon used to be this heavy, wicked ep]
Primus - Rhinoplasty [US, not that good but I've wanted it for ages to complete my collection]
Skin Chamber - Wound [US, this is good but the CD may be a different mix? my LP sounds a bit different, better...]

Pick of the litter: Easily Iron Monkey, I've wanted this for a while, it's just proper sludge done exactly right
Track #2 Web Of Piss is highly recommended

Blunt Force Trauma - Vengeance for Nothing (Dying Fetus style bdm, good but it sure aint Jenovavirus :grumble:)
Broken Hope - Loathing (wanted this for ages, amazing album considering their other stuff is so boring)
Execration - Language of the Dead
Execration - Odes of the Occult
Both Execration discs are awesome but Language of the Dead is just so good, rawer than their later stuff kinda Autopsy meets Immolation sound very cool.

That sucks. Mine's brand new (only opened to rip it) and I could take or leave it, bought it on a whim.

Took advantage of the HHR spring clearance sale:

Blaze - The Rock Dinosaur (This wasn't clearance, I just really wanted it and was getting a good deal on everything else. LOVE these guys. Very pure sounding, light touches of 70s Scorps influence)

Night Demon - Night Demon (EP)
Demon's Gate - Demon's Gate (EP)
Pagan - Pagan (Curious about this one. It's probably terrible but the cover art has always spoken to me, as well as being trad heavy from '90)
Ravensire - Iron Will (EP, Cool cover, cool name, I'm in!)
Coven - Worship New Gods (I hear this is real primitive. I'm hoping it sounds something like The Hand of Doom)

Oh and a Mercyful Fate pin. The logo and three upside crosses. Real classy-like.
