Metallica - Ride The Lightning

Old French CD pressing to replace the shitty Australian 90s "remaster".

Saw these guys last night and picked this up at their merchtable. What an amazing show and a great setlist. Good balance of songs from every album which surprised me because of their style changes. Neige's scream is easily one of my favorites and is just stunning live.

I don't have a record player but I plan on making that purchase very soon. To help spur me on I made two purchases that I'm so fucking pumped about:

The Lamp of Thoth - No Laughing Matter (12", EP)
Black Death - Black Death (LP + 7")

The Black Death is a bootleg but it's so lovingly done I think it would be more accurate to call it a replica. No Laughing Matter I've wanted forever but had no way to play. I'm obsessed with The Lamp and they shine in an EP format.

From Amazon:
Luddite Clone - The Arsonist and the Architect
Vicious Rumors - s/t Rock Candy 2015 reissue
Overkill - The Electric Age

From FYE's used site:
Burnt By the Sun - Soundtrack to Your Personal Revolution
Burnt By the Sun - The Perfect is the Enemy of the Good
Human Remains - Where Were You When 2CD comp
(Yes I've been on a turn of the millenium Relapse kick)

From NWN! (ordered like two days before the sale, of course)
Embrional - The Devil Inside
Inculter - Persisting Devolution
Nocternity - Harps of the Ancient Temples

If you like death metal that succeeds at being dark, intense, and interesting without resorting to incessant blast beats, I highly rec that Embrional. Kind of slipped under my radar. Has parts that sound like Immolation and parts that sound like Decapitated but really it's its own animal and doesn't benefit from being described in other bands' terms. At first I wasn't really into it but subsequent listens were the key to making this fucker likely to end up on a year-end list.

And that Inculter is kickass blackish thrash out of Norway. Tons of energy.

Luca Turilli - King of the Nordic Twilight
Metallica - Reload

I've been picking up a lot of stuff with female vocalists as of late, so I needed a chance of pace.

Bought my first record player yesterday. Nothing fancy, a used Audio-technica for 60$. To celebrate I also bought a used copy of Unleashed in the East on vinyl. I'm very happy right now.

Roomie is out to lunch, I've got the whole house rockin.

Meager vinyl collection but mostly gems:

Masters Hammer - Ritual/Jilemnice Occultist
Judas Priest - Unleashed in the East
Tyrant - Too Late to Pray
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
Black Sabbath - Master of Reality

I feel like a whole new world of purchasing options has opened up.

You can look forward to finding stuff from the 1980s that sounds way better than the CD pressings. Congratz!

Just had these turn up over the weekend:

Obsequiae - Aria of Vernal Tombs
Grave - Necropsy - The Complete Demos
Macabre Omen - Gods of War - At War
Poison Idea - War All the Time
Sheer Terror - Just Can't Hate Enough

I saw both Obsequiae records in a local shop yesterday but they were pricey. The covers are so great, everyone has great things to say about them, but what I remember sampling left me kinda cold. I think I'm going to listen to a full album just to figure out for sure if they're worth the money.

Nice, Macabre Omen is one of the best albums of the year, awesome stuff.

I'm not sure Obsequiae is something you'd like, Jonpo but I think they're pretty cool.

To join Jonpo's in the analog paradise, I got a Walkman yesterday, given me to me by a metal goddess who called me an hipster but it's worth it! NP: Bowie's Lets Dance.

CDs from local record shops:

Immortal - Damned in Black, Think this completes my Immortal collection.
Mayhem - Esoteric Warfare, Decent, interesting album. Definitely worth checking out and picking up if you're a Mayhem fan.
Morbid Angel - Illud Divinum Insanus, I only got this due to how cheap it was (under $5). Still better than Surgical Steel.
My Dying Bride - Feel the Misery, Exploring My Dying Bride a bit more this weekend and they are growing on me. Still overall kind of a boring band, but maybe I'm just in the mood for boring, droning, gloomy doom right now.
W.A.S.P. - Golgotha, I need to collect more W.A.S.P. Blackie Lawless has such an amazingly, powerful, charismatic voice so I can't see them doing any wrong really with him singing at full force.

Nice haul there. though I've heard that last Krisiun was quite disappointing. everything else I have and enjoy so I know the quality minus the MA. I knew that was garbage.

I don't know how expensive and/or rare it is these days, but it's still a damned good album, so yes, I'm glad I got it so cheap. And if I didn't, I probably wouldn't even have picked it up.

Yeah, not many would argue otherwise, but it's just that Surgical Steel sucks a lot more. That's the contention here. It's like arguing the shit I took yesterday is worse than the shit I took today (yeah, angry video game nerd reference).

If you're comparing them to feces, Surgical Steel is a straightforward sausage-shaped plopper with a very ordinary smell and little to distinguish it.

Illud Divinum Insanus, on the other hand, is a violently reeking splurge of curry-fuelled explosive diahorrea that coats the toilet bowl in a layer of sticky filth, followed by a series of constipated sharp-edged hard chunks that rip your anus and cause severe haemorroids, then somehow that stink just sticks to the hairs around your asshole and it takes several showers and an entire bottle of shower gel before the smell finally goes away. Even then, for several weeks afterwards you sometimes get a relapse of that smell, as if it's seeped into the bathroom wallpaper and is also stuck to your nasal passages.

Weird. Would she say the same if you bought a tape deck? How the hell else are you supposed to listen to tapes? Forget she said that. Sway through the crowd to an empty space.

Yeah, exactly. Your shit analogy is spot on. In other words, Illud is way more fun and exciting. There's no denying this.

I guess that works.. it's exciting in the same way that fully clothed missionary sex in the dark with your long-term spouse is less interesting than being violently gang raped at gunpoint in a dark alleyway by a horde of Samoan ladymen.

In other thread-relevant news, I just purchased an original pressing of Deicide - Deicide for 5 bucks. I had this back in the day, then made the mistake of replacing it with the remaster because it was "louder"

I think I might be into this. I'm about halfway through the debut and it's just...gripping in a way that's hard to put in words. Usually anything labelled medieval or folksy makes me uncomfortable. But this is so lush and warm and organic. I don't know if I'll pay 25$ for it but I may track this down.

edit: *Checks prices online* ...or maybe I will pay 25$ and get it local. Sheesh.

Elfspell - Demo 2015 (CD-R, John Gallo of Blizaro/Orodruin/etc plays epic metal - with his D&D group?)
Eternal Champion / Gatekeeper - Retaliator / Vigilance (CD, when ordering stuff from Canada is cheaper than ordering from Greece. Can't wait to spend some quality time with this split)
Gatekeeper - Prophecy and Judgement (CD, not really a fan of this release, the band got much better)
Iron Void - Spell of Ruin (CD, 2012 reissue)
Iron Void - Doomsday (CD, one of the best trad doom full-lengths of the year!)
Operation Majority - Contact Lost (CD, Finnish prog/hard rock)
Starborn - The Dreaming City (CD, the cover art design for Stormspell's "Trend Killer Series" cheapens the look of the releases, but whatever, it's a good EP musically)
