I wish labels would just clone the older editions instead of doing bricked remasters. Either that, or release a 2xCD set and give us the non-ruined version on one of the discs.

FYI, in case anyone cares the 2004 Irond CD pressing is a clone of the original CD and is not bricked. Artwork probably not as nice as an original but I was able to pick up that one dirt cheap a few years back.

I bought the widely available remasters. I don't really care if they sound different that what the originals did. My ears aren't that picky with old vs. new stuff, but they sound good, and that's good enough for me. Fucking nut busting thrash metal, still.

Welp, guess I have to buy more Sepultura stuff. I only have BtR (which I was listening to in my car today oddly enough).

The BTR remaster sounds absolutely fucking amazing. One of the best guitar tones I've ever heard. I've never heard the original but that remaster is so damn sexy.

Haven't heard the remastered versions but I suspect they are worse than the old CDs. Most metal remasters are. That said, I checked the DR Database and it looks like the remasters for those are around a DR7. Definitely not ideal and probably noticeably compressed sounding on a decent system but far from the levels of brickwalled to absolute shit that you get with a lot of recent remasters in heavy music.

This week's purchases:

Bekëth Nexëhmü - De urtida krafterna
Locvlvs - Session 2011
Alexander Veljanov - The Sweet Life

De urtida krafterna is incredible, Session 2011 is an old favorite of mine that nobody ever talks about so it was pretty cheap, and I like Veljanov's material in Deine Lakaien so I thought I'd check out his solo work.

I don't hear any issues with them really. They sound about the same as when I first heard them.

Is that Snaggletooth bust/piece back there from that Motörhead boxset that Lemmy discouraged people from buying?

Just curious, not gonna harp on you if it is. It does look pretty cool but if Lemmy goes out of his way to tell you not to buy something, it'd probably be wise to listen.

Bloodbound - Unholy Cross
Falconer - Chapters from a Vale Forlorn

I've been obsessed with Bloodbound lately, so I had to get a Patrik Johansson album.

There's not a huge difference between the original Sepultura masters and the remasters other than volume level. I had the original back in the early 90s, then lost it and got the remaster which I had for a while, but then found an extremely cheap 1989 German pressing (in entirely mint condition, no less) which sounds better to my ears and lacks those annoying space-wasting bonus tracks.

Obituary, on the other hand, is more of a mixed bag. The remaster of Slowly We Rot sounds great but Cause of Death has the treble boosted far too high so it sounds all brittle and lacks the dark, festering murkiness of the original.

The volume is louder because they are more compressed, which isn't really a good thing from my perspective. Same reason I often seek out older CD editions, as do many others.

So in addition to added compression, they screwed up the EQ? Glad I have an old, non-remastered version.

Yeah they're typical late-90s hack jobs, for the most part. Cause of Death is the worst though, it actually gave me a headache.

Probably not metal enough for the Archives, but the latest addition to my collection is Hobo's "Bitter Pleasures". Perfect for fans of hard rock/metal. And great musicianship for kids that age too.

Root - Zjeveni / Temple in the Underworld 2xCD

Found this is the "OOP" used CD section of a local store. Right after I bought a FLAC of Temple through 7Digital of course. Guess I will be comparing masterings.

Picked up some more Varathron through Agonia records Bandcamp page.

-Untrodden Corridors of Hades

FYI Agonia Records is running a $3 sale on everything on their Bandcamp page through the end of the month.

Also from Bandcamp:

Saw Throat - Indestroy

Solstice - New Dark Age

Bought it at Hands of Blue Records : http://hands-of-blue.com/.
But it seems I got their last copy, since it isn't in stock anymore.

(edit) I also had contact with Howie Bentley on Facebook to buy the album, and he had some copies left on vinyl.
