I'd toss Convulse's "World Without God" up there, but with the forthcoming remaster of the album, I think its getting ample appreciation. Out of yours, I've only listened to Demigod and Morpheus Descends, while I haven't heard of the rest (perhaps God Macabre, but have merely seen the name somewhere). However I don't think that these are under appreciated so much as they were under the radar.

Haven't heard the last two, but I definitely agree on the first three. Demigod is amazing. Anyway, I'd also contribute:

Seance - Fornever Laid to Rest

That album, being released in 2003, probably isn't in line with the OP's definition of "old" DM albums, as much as that very album kicks ass.

To contribute (? I guess, this thread seems a bit dull), I'll toss in these albums:

Sadistik Exekutions the mangus! it was recorded in 1985(or 86) but released in 91 due to "problems" in the band. huge influence on bands like Mayhem.

some underappreciate dm out there:

corpus rottus - rituals of silence '91 (some memorable dm from the states in the old benediction style).
torchure - beyond the veil '92 (some great death metal from germany with some old asphyx/morgoth touch).
burial - relinquished souls '93 (great dm from holland, the florida way)
crossing death - one life is not enough '92 (raw death/thrash from mexic, the sudamerican way)
feretrum - from far beyond 92' (one of the best releases from spain, no doubt about that)

Disastrous Murmur - Rhapsodie in Red

Fucking fantastic album, wonderful groove, great double-pedal rhythems, and just all around fantastic slab of brutal old school death metal

Baphomet - The Dead Shall Inherit
This album set the stage for brutal death metal. Evil, groovy, muderous classic death metal, almost slam like in the riffage.

Ooh, Splenium for Nyktophobia!

Yeah, I think there are a shitload more underappreciated death metal albums out there that deserve mention here:

Immortalis - Incidium De Mortuis
Gorement - The Ending Quest
Internal Decay - A Forgotten Dream
Gutted - Blood For Us to Live
Gangrena - Infected Ideologies
Caducity - Whirler of Fate

Demigod: I don't know about criminally underappreciated anymore. They might not be known among the general metal populace, but they seem more like overfellated these days, at least here. Slumber is a good album, but it could've used a little more work, making the songs more efficient and the drumming is a bit stale at times.

God Macabre: It's been a very long time since I heard this one so I won't say much, but the lack of spins should say what I thought of it back then. I've been meaning to give it a whirl for the longest time, but I'm not a big fan of the Swedish style so I haven't gotten around to it.

Morpheus Descends: Agreed on this album. A forgotten NYDM band and album. Comparing it to albums like Effigy of the Forgotten, Dawn of Possession and Onward to Golgotha, it's something closer to Suffocation and manages a lot better in that department than Effigy. More coherent songwriting and drumming are the two biggest parts. But I prefer the styles of early Immolation and Incantation over this.

Uncanny: Definitely agreed here. Perhaps the best album the Swedish scene of that time had to offer. The songwriting is top notch. The only bad point is the Godflesh - Streetcleaner ripoff/tribute, Lepra. While not a bad song, it doesn't fit on the album at all. Even the crustpunk tribute fits in well, which really isn't that surprising considering the influence it had on the Swedish death metal scene.

Anesthesy: Haven't heard this band, but thrashy death is not much to my liking and I've heard that they sound like Massacra, whose popularity I've never quite gotten so...

Had been mentioned in the Death Metal gems but Rippikoulu's Musta Seremonia should receive another mention.

Anesthesy are (on this album anyway) not thrashy death, but rather more doomy. Check into it :)

I also agree mightily with the mentions of Molested, Seance, Intestine Baalism and others people have listed here.

I'm new here, so I didn't know that Demigod was as appreciated as they are around these parts. When that album came out I couldn't get anyone into it, but I always loved it.

Seriously, this thread have Psychosis written all over it. For the uninitiated they play some pretty damn spastic, deranged death metal, almost akin to an immature Ripping Corpse. It's a shame they haven't put out a full-length since their brand of twisted death metal is just killer.

Zany stuff indeed and the vocalist almost gives Stevo (Impetigo) a run for his money.

though I guess they are known to those into metal for a longer time, I would name

DESULTORY's "Into Eternity" and "Bitterness".

Both have ratings here on MA, but they seem to be somewhat "forgotten" and most people into DM for "only" a few years just don't know them.

I will add Funebre - Children of the Scorn to the list of Finnish releases being mentioned. It seems to me Adramelch, Demigod, somewhat Convulse, somewhat Sentenced and Rippikoulu get a lot of mentions but not Funebre as much.

Like the rest of the scene Funebre is death metal that contains a lot of doom elements making it quite atmospheric. This is my favorite album of the scene. It tends to be a less harsh than many of the others but the riffs are well constructed though not as catchy as some of the others like Adramelch.

Another one from this scene that I think deserves more mention is Disgrace - Debts of God. For the time this is so filthy sounding, more so than anything else I have heard from this scene.

Cemetary - An Evil Shade Of Grey, dark death metal with a nice eerie atmosphere

Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence - Brutal and melodic blackened death metal

I wouldn't say that Demigod is underappreciated, just underheard. Most people that have heard it love it, with good reason. It's better than 99% of all dm, dag nabit.

True. It's a very unique sounding death metal album. It is and isn't very Scandinavian at same time. Melodicism shines through but is rough around the edges with aggression and riffage. Amazing.

Some more stuff from me:

Mordicus - Dances From Left - next to Convulse and Demigod I believe this to be the greatest Finnish DM release ever. Quirky, melodic and pounding death metal.

Nirvana 2002 - the whole of their output. Nothing to be said here - just go and hear it since Relapse re-released it recently.

I don't really like Blod Draum as much as I think I might if the mix wasn't absolutely atrocious (the guitars... oh man. buried beneath walls of exaggerated resonance and terrible EQ!). Cool riffs and songs, but it's a real strain.

Accidental Suicide - Deceased

Not sure whether it's underappreciated but it surely deserves to be mentioned more often. A real gem of the 1990's death metal.

Actually I think that Ressurection album is not THAT good. Sure a solid DM release but it lacks something in my book. Just cannot say what.

And I second everyone who mentioned Gorement. One of the most underrated Swe-DM acts ever.

Yes, Ars Magna actually re-released it earlier this year. It has both the original and remastered version on it, as well as the Stormvold EP and the two demos. Pretty cool release.

I actually find that I enjoy the original version better than the new one. I think the odd mix actually adds to the charm of this particular release, though I can certainly see where you are coming from. It is a pretty weird album, though quite strong and full of really great riffs. The folk influence is not something I expected on first listen, but it really works well.

Any Electrocution takers here? Technically-minded death/thrash is whats in store and although they're no Sadus, I implore all oldschoolers to check these guys out. They're not exactly breaking any new grounds but a very fun-filled album, nonetheless. Speaking of technical old-school death I also recommend the following:

Xenomorph - Empyreal Regimes
Afflicted - Prodigal Sun
Polluted Inheritance - Ecocide
Suffer - Structures
Oppressor - Solstice of Oppression
Chemical Breath - Fatal Exposure.

Me. I love me some Swe-DM - especially Sorcery with their thrash touches to their death metal. I like Excruciate but I think Epitaph is a better band - darker and more vicious. Love me some Megaslaughter too and I reccomend their album to any lover of DM. Shame it got bootlegged recently.

I'll add two, thouhg one I'm not sure if it would be considered 'pure' death metal

Insatanity's "Divine Decomposition" what a fucking masterpiece!!
Aggressive, rifftastic and strategic use of keyboards throughout, like a more underground version of Acheron

This is the one I;m not sure about, Disembowelment's "Transcendence Into the Peripheral" not sure if I got that quite right either, but very drony, the atmospheric elements of it mighT not make it 'death metal' enough even though the vocals sure as heck are!

I'll chime in with whoever said Desultory's "Into Eternity", yet another masterpiece, so incredibly intense all the way through

ANd I'd like to add in Deteriorate "Rotting in Hell" to the list, too
