I never hear anyone mention this band. Anyone familiar with their In Ancient Beliefs album? If you like dark death metal and have even a slight interest in stuff like Incantation, I highly recommend checking out Deteriorot. I feel they put alot of effort into their riffs and creating a dark atmosphere. Thoughts?

Isn't one of them a forum regular?

Nevermind, was a different band. Not a clue which one though. Some semi-known black & death metal band from the US which I think also starts with 'D'.

I love 'em. Great band, though it's wierd how they took 11 years to make one album and now are well on course to spending another 11 years making another one.

What I love about them is how they manage to feel malevolent and oppressing while at the same time retaining a large degree of accessibility, mainly due to the odd sense of groove (not in the sense some of you might be thinking, groove is a word with more than one meaning) the album has.

I wouldn't know, I was only 9 when it was relesed and obviously not a metalhead :D But I can well imagine how longtime fans of the band must've felt.

Definitely one of those cool semi-technical dark death metal bands that was sort lost in the fray. Certainly nothing incredible, but it has a satisfyingly evil sense and some great convoluted riffing. Very New York stuff.

I have In Ancient Beliefs and it is rather good death metal. Using Incantation as a reference point is certainly not far off; I think it is a rather good comparison. However, I find Deteriorot more direct and a bit more traditional in delivery than Incantation. Where the latter might have quite chaotic and deranged songs laced with doomy passages, the former has less chaos and more of a focus on doom and gloom (with perhaps a tad more melody). While certainly not amazing, they are definitely solid.

They have apparently reformed as of late and are planning to release the follow-up to In Ancient Beliefs with an album titled The Faithless to be released via Xtreem Music early next year. I await this release with cautious anticipation.

I'd also say "old Finnish Death Metal" and "old Swedish Dark Death Metal" bits and pieces. Totally shredding guitar sound.

Yes, the sound of those guitars knocked me on my arse. I haven't listened to the album much, though. I'll have to buy it.

Yeah, there certainly is a fair bit of both of those styles present, though overall, I think they certainly fall in New York Incantation/Immolation style. The guitar tone is one of the best I've heard in death metal; it is dirty without being muffled; crunchy without being overproduced. I really hope they keep the same tone for the new album.
