Is it just me, or do the vocalists for each band sound VERY similar?

Maybe it's just their earlier stuff. I've been listening to Autopsy's Severed Survival and Entombed's Left Hand Path and both vocalists sound SO alike.

I really thought I was listening to the same band for a second.

I also noticed this. Both of their styles are extremely similar, although I probably prefer Autopsy over Entombed. I wish their were more 'old school' DM bands in the vein of these 2. Their influence is incomprehensible.

Not surprising since most bands in Sweden worshiped Autopsy. "Severed Survival" was definitely a catalyst for pushing those bands into their style of death metal.

You familiar with the whole new 'wave' of retro-DM bands? A lot of bands these days are basically worshipping Left Hand Path, mostly the bands that Paganizer dude is involved with.

Agreed. If I had a rupee for everytime I heard an Autopsy riff in a Grave or Dismember song...

Autopsy is the single biggest inspiration for the veteran swedeath bands.

Interestingly enough, you will also find Autopsy worship on the Isengard- Spectres Over Gorgoroth demo material from Fenriz. And Autopsy styled riffing and atmosphere is scattered throughout Soulside Journey. Some remnants of Reifert and co still remain on A Blaze In The Northern Sky if you listen with a trained ear.....

In that Swedish Death Metal book that came out last year, there's quite a lot of discussion about how much those bands were into Autopsy (and Carcass too). That's why getting signed to Peaceville or Earache was all the more thrilling for those young bands.

I'd say that the reason is pretty simple: the old-school Swedish bands clearly didn't create death metal out of the clear blue sky (black soil?) but they had heavy inspiration from somewhere. And I daresay that that "somewhere" is Autopsy. So that's probably why.

I hear a lot more Celtic Frost in "A Blaze In The Northern Sky" than Autopsy.

Entombed were more than likely influenced by them at the time of writting Left Hand Path.

Yeah. The first time I listened to it (I think it may have been "In the Shadow of the Horns") I thought it might have been a Celtic Frost cover or something.
