Found an old VHS with this single video at the end, did a quick Youtube search and couldn't find another so I posted it up. I have no info on a date or location. Enjoy!

Thanks for uploading that. Typical early Mayhem quality, though. :P

The sound is pretty decent but the video quality is crappy. Sorry but that's how it went back when VHS was the only available media :)

It was an insult towards Olio. Mayhem's recordings have always been pretty easy to discern. There are far rawer and rougher recordings out there.

Yeah, I doubt I would care for them.

The audio in that link was pretty good, but you would be hard pressed to call the video clear.

Edit: What are you referring to when you talk about early Mayhem being easily discernible? I'm mostly referring to the bootleg stuff, that I've heard.

This is like watching porn through fizzy channels on acable. Instead of "I think I saw a boob!" it's "I think I saw a guitar. " haha. Cool anyway, thanks for the link.

Okay, maybe not Mayhem as the bassist is left handed. Who knows though, I don't think a lot of bands were covering Mayhem in 91 when I got the tape:)

there's only two Mayhem videos with Dead circulating. the rehearsal and the video of the Dawn of the Black Hearts gig (which is unwatchable). definitely not Mayhem, but i guess still cool for the "kvlt" value.

im sure more videos of Dead era shows exist, but they arent being traded widely, if at all.

This isn't Mayhem. There's a different band logo in the background, Dead didn't have black hair, did not wear those stage accessories and the venue is too small for Mayhem. Apart from the facts, it's still a pretty solid video and very "kvlt" if you will.

Dont think the vocalists hair look really black though. But it seems darker than Deads. But otherwise gestapothrash seems to be correct.
I also saw a bald guy in there somewhere I think.

I wonder who they were.

What else is on that VHS of yours, and where did you get it? That would maybe have told you it wasn't Mayhem before you uploaded it as that

Not Mayhem. That appears to be a Bethlehem logo in the background but that isn't Bethlehem either since J. Bartsch is not left-handed and that isn't Steinhoff on drums.

I am sure it is some band that opened for Bethlehem in the early 90s.

Bathory autograph session in Sweden, 1988
Grotesque live in 1989
2 Possessed shows from 1987

Nothing that gives me any kind of a clue :(

Euro also played a Les Paul, which, from what I could tell, the guitarist was definitely not playing there. Most definitely not Mayhem.

Yeah, I'd have to agree. The only way it could be Mayhem is if it was that undefined era after Dead blew his head off and before Euronymous was murdered. It's an off chance, but I doubt it. The song that plays afterwards sounds nothing like the Mayhem I'd know from that era. Also, the band seems to be a bit more black/thrash and "trve black".

Possibly another Scandanavian band that was influenced by Mayhem? I know Emperor lifted an unused Mayhem riff for Ye Entrancemperium... it's not completely out of the realm of believability that this was Norwegian or Swedish band influenced by Mayhem before De Mysteriis' release. The tape looks old enough.

Darkthrone never covered Mayhem (that I know of) and played little live... and there's no way that was Burzum. Emperor never had a vocalist that looked like that... possibly an early incarnation of Marduk?

I'm at a fucking loss. They seem to have it down dead-on though.

It's a good cover but yeah, it's not any incarnation of Mayhem. I'm guessing this was perhaps from around 92/93? If so Marduk covered Freezing Moon live during their gigs in 92 and Enslaved covered it as well in 94 (it's not either though I'm sure). I'd say Impaled Nazarene but then again Mikka is/was bald and with the whole Norway hate thing...

I'd be interested in hearing more from this band, if anyone could ever figure out who they are. I'd also be very interested to know if there are any videos of Mayhem's Leipzig gig floating around the world somewhere.

Hmmm, I feel a little silly for not picking up on all those details. It certainly isn't Mayhem and I don't have any idea who it could be. It comes down to how many recordings of Freezing Moon existed by 92/93 (assuming the video does come from those years) and who could have heard them. If it was 93, Live in Leipzig was released in that year and Mayhem sold albums to all corners of the globe, so it could be anyone. To anyone waiting for a definitive answer; I wouldn't hold your breath.

Edit: And that's not even taking all the Mayhem bootlegs into account.

One thing to consider is that I got the VHS no later than 1993.

Who did you get it from? Anyone from Germany by any chance?

I also have VHS with the others you mentioned but never seen this footage before. That is definitely the Bethlehem logo in the back so like I said earlier, might be a band that opened for them.

I know it's not topic related but you should post the Bathory and Possessed footage on youtube.
