I don't know if this has been done recently, it probably has. But anyway, what are some of your favorite band names? Which ones just make you go, "shit, I wish I had thought of that"?

Some of mine are Pig Destroyer, Insect Warfare, Cannibal Corpse, Cancerface, Napalm Death, Septic Death

I heard 2 years ago a friend of mine talking about Windir, and find it was a nice name. So this is why I start looking at them and now it's one of my favorite band. After that I learned that it means "Warrior" in a Norwegian dialect. That's nice.

Agreed.

I always liked the name Mastodon for some reason. Vader is a pretty sick name too. Emperor is an awesome name. Cryptospy is a pretty cool portmanteau.

I remember when I was like 15 I was going to call my band "Deicide." I was heartbroken when I heard it was taken.

Favourite names: Venom, Crack Jaw, Witchfinder General, Sarcofago, and of course Mercyful Fate.

Also: Morbid Saint, Hellhammer, Master's Hammer. Actually, anything with hammer in it is almost an instant winner.

Any Name I could've come up with is beaten countless times in diferent kickass ways, so I don't have a favorite band name since there's too many different ones... If I had to choose one I'd also say Death... or maybe MegadetH...

I always thought Extreme Noise Terror was a great name; suits the music too.

Darkthrone is one of the mmost evocative names for me :)

Amon Amarth and Cradle of Filth are cool names to me.

The best one of all...is the legendary BEHEMOTH!

I love powerful, wicked one-word names, like Obituary. Immolation. Deicide. Possessed.

Caner has got to be one of the most morbid names without trying, really.

Amon Amarth is great, though I also like bal-Sagoth, just for the epic, mystic feel to the name. Dimmu Borgir and Celtic Frost I also like just cause they sound cool.

Epoch of Unlight
Myrkskog (it looks like it could cut you)
Beherit (looks like it should be an actual word -- maybe it's archaic)

Incidentally, it was only in the last couple of years that I learned that Darkthrone came from the inscription on the ring from ... that one, particular saga. I guess that makes sense; everything else in Scandinavian extreme metal seems to have come from Tolkien.

Destroyer 666

You read that name and hear a song like "Lone Wolf Winter," the badassness is just overwhelming.

The member names are also wicked: Warslut, Shrapnel, Merseus, Beserker, etc.

Lykathea Aflame is a sweet band name, and they coincidentally make terrific music as well.

Beherit is the name of a demon, Capricorn day demon, also known as Berith.

First two words in the "Charm Of Making."

Dirty Rotten Imbeciles - sounds about right... now if I can only remember how to spell "two."

It's a spell that Merlin uses in King Arthur and it translates to "Serpents Breath". You can hear Merlin bellowing it at the beginning of their song of the same name.

I'll add Gorgoroth. It just sounds so deliciously evil.

My favorite bands names are Falkenbach for its general cool-soundingness, Immortal for it being so fitting for the most consistent BM band of all time, Grave Digger, Aurora Black, Moonspell... and of course Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden.

Candlemass, Nile, Suffocation, Satyricon, and Emperor.

I dont know why exactly, but all of those names just feel so right for the music when I hear it. They're just great to me.

Huh. I guess I should've written that I'd assumed that's where the name came from. I was reading a book of lit crit on Tolkien -- why, I don't know, as I've never read Tolkien himself -- and when I came across that "One for the dark lord on his dark throne" line, I figured that had to be the origin of the band's name.

Also, at the risk of being wrong twice in one thread, isn't that "anaal nathrakh" clip from the movie Excalibur?
