The day of reckoning is nearly upon us! Next tuesday this album comes out but I couldnt resist getting a small taste of it last night and just when I think Portal couldnt sound any more fucked up and evil, they do it again.

I know it will take more listens to fully digest it but my initial reaction is that this is probably the best thing they've done to date, by far. The production sounds perfect, everything is still quite dense but sounds crystal clear. The guitar progressions are more weird and varied than ever and the song writing in general just sounds like it was injected with heroin. Basically, this album sounds like Cthulhu power bombing the universe.

To those who have had an early listen, what are your thoughts? And is anybody else planning on catching these guys at this years MDF? I feel after last night that they alone will be worth the trip.

Judging from the songs they released early and the first track from the album, it seems to be a lot more accessible than both Outre and Seepia. Not that accessible is a bad thing, I enjoyed the new tracks.

Yeah, honestly, I would have to agree it probably is more accessible but boy, oh boy, if this isnt one instance where fucked up song writing was actually increased and not a casualty of accessibility. Some parts of this album basically sound like Gorguts on acid.

This leaked over the weekend, so I've given it a few listens. It's a pretty strong effort. The production is closer too Seepia, but the songs are just as twisted as ever. I like that they re-recorded a couple tracks from "The Sweyy" because I only have that on vinyl so it'll be nice to have them on a CD.

This should be enough for anyone to check out this band.

But seriously, i'm a big fan of Outre, along with the music i love their image along with the lyrics. They really create such a great atmosphere in every way possible. Downloaded the new album and listening shortly, here's a great video i'm sure many of you know about but check it out regardless.

Profound Lore is really proving to be an outstanding record label.

It's definitely better than Outre', so I'm happy. I would say it's probably the best out the three, have to give it more listens though.

Good to hear good reactions. I heard that one song they had streaming a month or so ago; is the rest of the album similar production-wise? I didn't like the way the drums sounded on Outre' but the sample I heard had a much more full drum sound.

Their label made available two weeks early and I got my copy last weekend. Their best effort, and one of the year's best, easily.

The music is more "normal" (see: slightly less fucked up), but it's still vintage Portal with their trademark, murky "beehive" riffs. The drum production is a step up and the rhythms on display are very interesting. The Curator sounds more deranged than ever and he's actually on equal standing with the music. The quality of the music here is just insane, you're going to have to hear it for yourself to truly understand. A lot of the songs have a weird nostalgia factor for me because every time I go back to listen to them, it feels like the first time all over again.

All the tracks are great but "Larvae", "The Swayy", and "Wership" (the build up in the beginning is pure class) are my favorite.

Is anyone else having a hard time with the production? I really want to enjoy this, but there's something missing that's really grating to my ears. Of course this probably has a purpose, but it's tough to get used to after listening to Outre.

Never heard of that before.

So if I order it now, it'll be shipped now?

Excellent album. Definitely in my top ten for '09. "Werships" is an instant favorite.

Outre' is awesome.. this one.. I don't know. I can't get into the one track I've heard, but maybe it will grow on me.

Well although it sorta varies they seem to have a strong liking for H.P. Lovecraft. The song on Outre "Omnipotent Crawling Chaos" in particular mentions Nyarlathotep, which well lets say, a character of sorts from his writing. If you're not familiar with his writing he basically writes cosmic horror about outer beings from another universe that dwell in regions of earth. Basically, just pure horror of the unknown and given Portals image, which is quite bizarre and 'out there' that it fits into the scope of their entire concept.
