I really like this one. It has an average rating on this site, but I think it's a bit unfair, as it has a unflinching old school approach. Anyway, this is kind of death/thrash and it breaks no new ground, but goddamn!! It makes me wanna bang my head! Songs like Evil Rites and Pestilent Seed(The Plague) just rip. Catchier than syphilis at one of Nero's toga parties too....

This is ONE HELL of furious Swedish DeathThrash (with the exclamation mark on Thrash). In the same league as Merciless. A total blast.

Agreed. Especially this album from Merciless.

This is a seriously good album.

I love that album, IMO it's the best by Merciless. Great combination of thrashing insanity and catchy melodies.

Oh man, hell yes!! Nuclear Attack, Unbound, Forbidden Pleasure and my personal choice cut- Back To North. Brilliant stuff. However, it seems that Merciless have trouble releasing bad albums . As The Awakening and the newer s/t albums are all stellar.

Crematory (Swe) - Wrath from the Unknown
Unique swedish death metal. Awesome lo-fi production.
Image

Obscurity (Swe) - Damnations Pride
'87 Proto-swedeath. Possessed influence is unmistakable.
Image

Order From Chaos - Stillbirth Machine
Black/death.
Fan-fucking-tastic guitar work. Album shreds.
Image

Infester - To The Depths In Degradation
Soulslaying US Death Metal. Atmosphere on this is horrifying.
Image

Deteriorate - Rotting In Hell
Album cover says all.
Image

Violent Dirge - Elapse
'93 Lo-fi Polish Tech Death.
Don't pass this one up.
Image

Necrosanct - Incarnate
British DM.
Released on Black Mark. Enough said.
Image

Utumno - Across The Horizon
Underrated Swedeath.
A nice break from the gore. No cuddly refrains or reflective interludes here. Just straight death with a fresh perspective.

Does anyone know anything about the Irish Death Metal scene in the 90s? I'm very interested.

Also, Rabbit's Carrot from Sweden. Remnants of the NYDM stuff.

Irish Death Metal is more barren than Thai Death Metal.

Tricifix, Filth Dominion, and Asphyxia are the only bands I can think of that are worthwhile.

This was mentioned before but it deserves a second mention for anyone who missed it, Brutality - Screams Of Anguish. Old school US death metal with tons of melodic solos.

Check out Morphosis from Dublin. Formed and released some demos in the 90's, but just released their first full length in 2009 ("Rise of the Bastard Deities"). And it's stellar, even though they're as obscure as many of the "old school" bands mentioned in this thread. Highly recommended.

When did they change their name? I am sure I have something from a 'Morphosis', although couldnt be 100% that it's the same band.

A bit trivia here;
Anders from Cadaver told in a documentary (can't remember which, probably something about Mayhem) that Fester was the bands that everyone hated back in the day. Mainly because their guitarist had a pink guitar and wore white sweatpants.

Also, these are some never bands, but still worth checking out

Obliteration from Norway, old school sounding death metal with some really gutteral vocals, from the same place as Darkthrone.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scH0WopL ... annel_page - With Apollyon from Aura Noir.

Bastard Priest from Sweden, plays punkish death metal, really cool.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMEF9bGwBLg

Death Breath from Sweden. Nicke Andersson's new band, no question asked, pure awesomeness!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6MDOwo4-2Y - Music video, with a zombie and a chick, the old school way!

Now for something old and dirty, Vomit from Norway! Vomit was a death metal band and Mayhems "brother band" back in their teenage days. They just released some demos before they called it a quit.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgzwWs7KK0o - expect some bad quality!

Goddefied- Abysmal Grief

Mentioned this before in similar topics/threads, but it definitely deserves to be in this one. This was originally released way back in 93(since re-released in 2008 in 10" format), and if you like old-school Swedeth, with Left hand Path leanings, this is for you. Really very good, check 'em out those of you who haven't already. Don't be put off by that shitty name.

Divine Eve- As The Angels Weep ep
Image

This is about as old-school as they come. Absolutely riddled with Celtic Frost riffage, coupled with some doomier moments. Has a thick, sludgy guitar tone, which works bloody well. At times it reminds me (slightly) of a faster Winter, some Autopsy and obviously C.F. Great shit.

Fans of The Chasm must hear this.

Well, Serpens Aeon couldn't be called old school since they formed in '97, but that's still a badass album. It's like a combination of Slayer, Morbid Angel and The Chasm without sounding like a boring ripoff of any of them. Maybe someone should start an obscure "not so old-school" death metal discussion.

Don't let the cover fool you, this is absolutely menacing death metal with an intense melodic flare to it.

That album cover would make Hypocrisy jealous with envy.

My favorite thing about this thread is looking at the album covers

For some reason, old looking album covers (80's or 90's) with artwork that was obviously done without a computer really appeal to me.

Yeah, the old album covers had a lot more character, bad as many of them were. I like the simpler, somewhat low quality look...it adds to the atmosphere in many ways.

Doesn't have to be released late 80s/early 90s to be old school. I'll agree they don't sound like Death or Autopsy but to me they are far more old school than Suffocation and Immolation who both released albums in the early 90s.

True enough. I just wasn't sure if this thread was focused on bands who released albums up through the early to mid-nineties or if it could include bands who still hearken to that period of death metal.

I really should mention this. It's a bloody masterpiece.

Necros Christos(Ger)- Triune Impurity Rites
Image

Fuck. Where do i start. I have this on both vinyl and cd it's that damn (un)godly. This is not your average Death Metal album. Think of a black, smoke spewing, blasphemous death machine crunching it's way relentlessly across vast, charred fields of bones and gravestones, and your almost half-way there.

No blast beats to be found at all. Anywhere. But it's the sheer weight and ritualistic conviction that will leave your soul blackened, yet hungry for more. Untouchable, superb and dark as the bottom of the abyss.

Really? Care to elaborate?

I believe they qualify. Having more of an old-school approach is the core of their song writing and feel.

Necros Christos are very old school in terms of song composition. The production and vocals however, differ greatly from most typical old school death metal. And the interludes are awesome. Incredible band.

I wanted to really hold on to this band myself, just so no one else would hear them. Alas, I must, for the sake of purging some of your guys' taste in deathcore.

Here, is Ahrimah: Ain Soph Aur

Image

They only released 1 demo in 1994 and I was highly skeptical about getting it when I saw it in a blog. I figured what the hell and went ahead, and my is this a treat. Has some fantastic prog moments, but the guitar tone is massive and the vocals are beastly. My one complaint is how quiet and rather stale the drum sound is. The music sounds pretty middle eastern / death, but coming from a Polish band makes it a good twist.

Anyway, check it out.
