Well today is the fifth anniversary of Quorthon's death. So I feel it is appropriate to start some Bathory discussion. It seems that everyone always goes crazy over mourning Dimebag's death, when in my opinion Quorthon contributed much, much more to metal. I'll be playing Hammerheart today in his honour. It's my favourite Bathory album. What are you guys' Bathory favourites?

I wonder if any material exists from Nordland III and IV, buried in an archive somewhere? It's something to ponder.

Blood Fire Death is my favourite Bathory album, though I do like everything by him other than Requiem, Octagon and Destroyer of Worlds.

I should give BFD a spin like right now. In fact, I shall.

Actually, at the time of his death Quorthorn was working on a new album, but not a Nordland album. They actually weren't meant to be a trilogy, the only reason why there was two was because he had too much (awesome) material for the one album!

Speaking of which, Nordland II will forever reign as n my favourite Bathory album.

Hammerheart is my favourite too. I dont care what people say, Quorthon was the original Black metaller and Bathory probably the first BM band. I think its time to put my Bathory playlist on.

i can only really get into Blood Fire Death and a bit of Hammerheart

early albums are too badly produced and vocals are pretty bad, later albums are pretty much same lol, i hate his clean vocals, no offence here but it really sounds like hes someone with downs syndrome trying to sing

A true extreme metal icon if there ever was one. Time to put "Valhalla" on the speakers.

Rest in peace.

I'm a huge Bathory fan and like almost everything he's ever done, even both Octagon and Requiem to an extent. You want to talk about innovators in metal, look no further.

May Quorthon's spirit forever reign in the golden walls of heaven.

Will raise a glass to Quarthorn, true metal legend. I like most of his material especially Hammerheart, Blood Fire Death and Nordland. On a different note I was sure I had a Quarthron interview somewhere in which he stated Nordland III was his next/in the making album, I could be wrong, will try to find it. Anyway fantastic artist, hard to believe it is five years since his passing.

I'm sure Quorthon smiles upon us from Valhalla as we speak. He was a true metal legend, and will never be forgotten. I'm going to start Hammerheart (my favorite of his) right now.

I really like everything from the debut to Twilight of the Gods. But Under the Sign of the Black Mark is without doubt his finest work - that album's pretty untouchable in my book. Something very evil and fierce about - the guitar tone is just concentrated blackness, powered by batteries.

In honour to the great man, I will deny that I am influenced by anyone when it comes to being a musician. Venom? Who is Venom?

Based on my username, I think it's obvious I'm a fan. Hammerheart has grown on me substantially over the years, I guess I'd even say it's my favorite album considering I own the shirt. That said, I rate most of his work extremely highly, even the grunge stuff.

This guy essentially ignited the passion for music that I have today and has influenced my tastes across a broad spectrum of genres. I don't think I would have delved into the underground to the extent that I have by now if it wasn't for him.

I wasn't even into metal when he was still alive, but if it weren't for Bathory, I probably wouldn't be into the stuff I am now. What a great song writer and innovator, definitely one of metal's greatest contributors.

Had I not got into most of Bathory's material before the review contest, then this day wouldn't mean as much to me.

RIP Quorthon / Runka Snorkråka / Pär Vers / Fjärt Bengrot / etc.

I should give Black Mark an email of remembrance, but I doubt Klaudia would give a shit.

Well damn. I guess it's time to get something in his honour.
And that something is booze, The Return, and a cold, windy night.

Bathory... the one band which lead me down the paths of extreme metal, really, atleast most of them. Started out with the folk-stuff, got into the older material, and thus began exploring the black metal genre. Some of his songs have given me the strongest metal-experience I can ever imagine, like "Call From The Grave" (That fucking guitar solo get me every time! Oh, the pain! THE PAIN!!!), envisioning myself on a ship listening to "Shores in Flames", the sorrow of "Blood on Ice", the might of the epic "Nordland"-landscapes, the power of SATAN! RAISE THE FUCKING DEAD!

Three hails for Quorthon! Hail! Hail! Hail!

It was a real fucking shame that he passed on so early in his life. I'm sure he would have released many more great albums had he lived.

And let's face it, Under the Sign of the Black Mark was basically the blueprint for the second wave of Black Metal in the early 1990's.

I remember reading an interview several years ago when Quorthon said that when Bathory was finally over he would release all the rare material that had so far never seen the light of day. Some tracks were used on the Jubilleum Trilogy (which I never bought, actually) but on some tape somewhere there are the tracks from the Necronomicon/Maleficarum EP, the tracks from the Occulta/Okkulta sessions and also the tracks from the original Requiem album (nothing to do with the album of the same name released in the 1990's) which, according to Quorthon, was a "speeded up version of Reign in Blood" (now that sounds fucking awesome to me!).
If that's all true, I hope Boss and Black Mark DO finally release it all at some point in the near future.

Anyway, I'm off to have a can of cider while I listen to Twilight of the Gods. Cheers Quorthon!

Wow, time went by so quickly.. A great loss.

And my favourite work of him, just like the most people here, is 'Under the Sign of the Black Mark'.

That must have been a long, depressing thread. I wonder what it was like.

For me the first six albums are flawless. I got into Bathory in October of 2004. The first album I bought was Hammerheart, then the Nordlands, then the old stuff. I love Quorthon's work, the emotion and atmosphere in his songs are unparalleled. He was a musical genious and I believe Bathory was the first true black metal band. If it weren't for him, metal wouldn't be the same today and several sub genres wouldn't exist or they would be very different. May he rest in peace. I'm playing the whole discography today.

Man, oh, man. I remember when I first heard Dies Irae, it sent metal chills down my spine. Definately the man behind the Bathory monster created music that will last the ages to come.

" When the wind calls my name, and its time for me to die.
Wrap me in my cape and lay my sword at my sie
Then place me on a ship of oak and let it drift with tide
And let the flame purify my soul on its way to hall up high".- Shores In Flames
