If suomi means Finnish or Finland, isn't Suomi Finland redundant?

Finnish speakers please help, the internet has failed me on this one.

Exactly the problem I'm running into. Surely they knew their own language's grammar, right?

They would.. I'm guessing it might just be some parody. Their grammar is way different from anything latin/germanic based (it's similar to mongolian/korean for example).

But Finnish Finland Damn? Cmon, can't be that fucked.

Not Mongolian/Korean...Finnish may be a Uralic language, but that's still miles away from anything coming from Northeast Asia.

I think "Suomi Finland" is simply the official international name for the country, hence the "SF" on the car stickers/EU-plates.

That's the correct answer.

Where'd you get the "damn" part from? That's like translating FUUUUUCK as "oh my". Perkele is what a husband screams after a bottle of vodka when he's slaughtering his entire family.

So then it just translates to "Finnish devil"?

I actually wouldn't translate it directly at all. It's more of a war-chant or an expression of national pride, or whatever. In fact, this would be best explained by the band members themselves.

I've inquired about this before myself. The literal translation of it is Finland Finland (curse word), but the literal meaning is useless to you. It's sort of a nationalistic chant that could conceivably be used by soldiers, or at Impaled Nazarene shows.

The word Perkele can also be used in other ways than to denote Satan. I see the title of the album as a hail to Finland, so I'd translate it as "Suomi Finland, fuck yeah!".

Thats true. Its more like a warcry, like a "Hakkaa päälle!" or "uraa!". "Perkele" is strong word and should be shouted loud as possible. So it fits perfectly to scare the enemy in battle.

It is also old and very traditional finnish word, meaning devil. But nowadays its used as "damn" or "fuck" or whatever.

No. It's original meaning was something like supreme god, a different name for Ukko Ylijumala, literaly Old Man Supreme God. When christians came to Finland they just told people that their old gods were really false and they have been worshipping the devil, thus making Perkele a name for Satan.

Thats one theory. Here's another;
Quote:
