Okay guys. Two of you said that Hammerheart sounds good on picture disc, so I might have to buy that one. Maybe I just got a bad copy of Twilight of the Gods, or maybe it's just that album that came out badly.

Had some gift cards to burn so I ended up buying a Crosley record player from a local Target for about 70 bucks after discounts and so far its working pretty well. I didn't have a nice tape player/CD player either so /shrug.

Manowar - Battle Hymns
Manowar - Kings of Metal
Revenge/Witchtrap Split
Xasthur - Xasthur
Xasthur - All Things Drained ( double pic disc )

is all my collection consists of now

I am howerver very jealous of your Agalloch record, I can't seem to find any for a modest price. I think there is a "The Mantle" LP on ebay but its hovering at 150 bucks.

Wolves in the Throne room will be the next thing I add to my colllection though. I love Malevolent Grain .

Got a Sony turntable off of eBay brand new for about 75 bucks, had for two years and no problems yet. I love vinyl a lot, and even though it's not portable, the mp3 ripping option is nice as well, as most of the time the vinyl rip sounds just as good as lossless. My collection is decently large, I have a lot of 45s including many old demos and EPs. I have a lot of drone, classic rock, black metal, death metal, stoner and hip-hop on vinyl.

To the OP, if you want to rip your vinyls and store them on CD, there's a great record player for just that purpose here:

Would there be any real advantage to buying the ION TTUSB10 for an additional $50? Also, what is the "Tone Arm Lift Lever" that comes with it?

AFAIK, the only difference is the inclusion of a dust cover, which is certainly a must.

The tone arm lift lever? It sounds to me like it's a little switch that you can push to lift the tone arm off of the record. Otherwise, they're probably talking about the tiny piece of plastic that sticks out from the head of the tone arm that allows you to pull it up without having to constantly readjust the tone arm weight.

It's worth getting a turntable just for the fantastic albums that you can pick up for next to nothing in charity shops, I've had albums by Possessed, Merciful fate, Napalm Death, Slayer, Deicide etc and more NWOBHM than you can shake a stick at all for under £3

I've heard mixed bags on those USB tables - some people love em, some hate em.

Download Audacity (it's free); take your regular turntable, get a RCA->1/8" cable and run the output on the pre-amp into your hard drive and you're ready to roll. You can do the same thing with a cassette deck (even a Walkman will do, just use the headphone jack as the line-out) and turn your tapes into MP3's.

Check Amazon.com for great deals; I got a Gemini that Guitar Center was selling for $189.99 + tax for about $110 (no tax and free shipping).

Like all gear you get what you pay for - there's a reason SL-1200's cost so much. However, your table is only part of the equation - a $1,000 table and cartridge setup will still sound like crap through a shitty receiver and speakers. There's nothing wrong with buying low/mid level gear and gradually upgrading.

As for why I love vinyl...why not!

It looks cooler, shit even smells cooler (love that musty vintage smell of a 10+ year old record). Like already said, there's so much more detail to the layout on "Somewhere In Time" on 12" x 12" vs. a 4" x 4" CD booklet.

As for sound quality...that depends. The Gathering's "Souvenirs" and Grey's "Sisters of the Wyrd" - records that have been specifically remastered for vinyl - have a noticeable improvement in sound quality from analog to digital. The Emperor Back On Black represses where it's just a direct transfer..."Emperor" sounds a bit better on LP than CD; "Nightside" sounded exactly the same when I switched back and forth from my table to CD player...but again the artwork looks so much better on a 12" x 12" gatefold it's worth keeping. (I've heard the 2LP "In The Nightside Eclipse" is worth the extra dough, which makes sense - heavier vinyl with more room on each side for the tracks to breathe).
