Korven Kuningas by Korpiklaani is long ass: after the first 5 or 6 minutes there is this sort of drum that does the same simple melody over and over again. It sucks.

First of all, it all depends on your meaning of "long". Most songs in the world are about 3-5 minutes maybe. To me, a 6-7 minute song can be long. Take Freezing Moon for example. I think it's a long song but the reason I think that is because the intro riff goes on FOREVER.

Now long songs aren't bad, as long as they change it up. Antithesis of Light by Evoken is a 13 minute song, but there are changes, keyboard is added in. Antithesis of Light (Album) is an amazing album, and all the songs are ten minutes at least, but I don't mind it too much.

It depends on the genre though, I can see a long ass song being in from a symphonic metal band, like Devil Doll, who have like hour long songs, but then again half of the songs are usually rests. If a band can have a 40 min+ song and there are no rests, and can play it live, then it's a long song.

Thrash, Grindcore, Death Metal, and all the little variants should not have long songs though, 5 minutes is the maximum for me.

the only long songs that i can stand are the ones on Iron Maiden's A Matter of Life and Death and on Destroyer 666's Unchain the Wolves; that's mainly because I don't like prog, doom, and Meshuggah.

Surely someone here must know Moonsorrow's V: Havitetty. A nearly hour-long album comprised of only two songs. Epic stuff, though I haven't given it a listen in a while. Half-hour long songs can be quite daunting if you ask me.

I don't know. Some long songs are great if it helps the song. But then again, some songs (like pretty much all of Dragonforce's stuff) are just unnecessary in how long they are, mainly because their songs are 20% lyrics and 80% riffs.

I guess for me, the best long song i can think of off the top of my head would have to be Gojira's The Way of All Flesh. 17 minutes of pure glory.

Whatever fits the song, although a lot of my favorite bands write longer tunes. But what works for Boris might not work as well for Malignancy.

Green Carnation's Light of Day, Day of Darkness is an immense 1 hour long prog/doom metal song, and I like it.

I agree, though I'd downplay the use of epic to each their own. :P

10 minute songs are definitely not excessively long by any stretch of the imagination, and that's outside of metal too. Sure you won't hear many pop songs extend past that time but it's very common place in other genres such as jazz or classical (to name two more commercial types of music, nevermind post-rock, dark ambient, drone (not drone doom), etc, etc.)

Reaching 20 minutes can be long depending on the type of metal, some forms 20 seems right around the appropriate time for the average track, if not one or two minutes earlier.

Anything over 35 mins and less than an hour is long yes, but again not excessively.

Songs in excess of an hour can be completely appropriate, such as a great song by bunkur, there are certainly others but they're slipping my mind at the moment. I'd agree though yes that beyond an hour is quite long. I've never encountered a song reach into the 2 hour realm and don't particularily think I'd like too either, barring some very intriguing concept album.

Being a fan of doom/death and funeral, i really enjoy epic songs. They are espeically good at work to have on in teh background. Usuallly not too distracting and make the time go by fast.

Another really good epic death metal song is Origin's - Antithesis. The first 7 minutes or so is just nonstop brutality with a cool fade to end it.

One AMAZING song imo is the song Exodus by Moonn {formerly a joke band, Moonn D)))) [half moon] after the Sunn O)))), but ended up recording and it came out very good and they dropped the D))))}.

Hin by Trist (Germany, NOT the amazing depressive black metal Trist from Cze.) is a pretty good 59:55 dark ambient/black metal piece. The one I alluded to earlier by Bunkur is Bludgeon. annnd, my longest isn't metal at all, but for any dark ambient fans: Darkest Before Dawn by Steve Roach.

Oh yes and how could I forget about Mistigo Varggoth Darkestra featuring the insanely infamous Knjaz Varggoth himself. An hour, 12 minute, 5 second epic dark ambient/black metal song/album The Key to the Gates of the Apocalypse. What do people feel about that Knjaz project anyway?

and a bit off topic but how do people feel of Satyr's Wongraven project? I thought Fjelltronen was sheer brilliance.

It depends on the song really..if it's boring, not captivating..it's hard to listen to. A lot of death and funeral doom get to be that way.

Though, I really enjoy Wormphlegm and the likes.

Some of the shit on ...And Justice for All hits 9 minutes. I like it, but I don't think I can handle shit much longer than that. Some epic bullshit that's 20 or 30 minute song, is to fuckin long. Don't have the attention span for that shit anymore.

Wormphlegm's demo is amazing... Shame their full length didn't quite live up to it, though it wasn't bad by any means. Heck, it pretty much inspired Senthil as a wormphlegm worship band.

I can't stand ...and justice for all songs either! :P Though I almost delusionally lead myself to believe that Metallica had two releases, their first and second. And that Mayhem disbanded in 1993. I actually asked someone what their favourite mayhem song was, having been told by her that she loved them and when she answered with a song I never heard of I was confused to say the least, saying I never heard of it... then realized ooooh right. :P Stuff was made after Dom Sathanas. Heck some would go as far as saying the Leipzig concert was their last release.

As long it holds my attention for all 9 or so minutes, I can enjoy it.

It mostly depends on the song structure and how the riffs are used. Songs that go "3 minute verse filled with boring riffs, 4 minute melodic section, 3 minute same verse, 3 and a half minute slightly altered melodic section" can fuck off.

A good song structure for a long song would have sort of a story-telling structure. Basically, a good long song should have a mood setting beginning, rising action, climax, ending, repeat if desired.

Phantom Of The Opera isn't THAT long song. It's just a 7 minute track like many others which Iron Maiden has done.
However Rime Of The Ancient Mariner and Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son are fucking AWESOME songs! Oh and let's not forget Nomad from Brave New World or Clansman from Vritual XI ;)

Axis of Perdition's Transition's album could be seen as a long song, if you add the tracks together which they're more or less supposed to be.

Though I don't consider either of them long... I think The Call of Ktulu from Ride the Lightning is much better (it's almost 9 mins so similar length) but then I can't stand post-RtL Metallica... Think MoP was very damaging to thrash, and metal in general in the mainstream when it was released. Though I don't like it over Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning I'll admit it wasn't even all that bad, not as good at all but not total trash either... but think it was still damaging. Though I'm an elitist, snobby, and bitchy thrash lover.

Also, Deathspell Omega has some stunning long songs that never get boring. (Diabolus Absconditus, Chaining the Katechon :hail:)

I have to be in the mood for them. Opeth's songs are about the limits of my listening patience. Sometimes I'm really in the mood for a song that "take me on a journey", other times I desire your typical 2-3 minute ragefests.

This. I absolutely love songs like Boris' "Sun Baked Snow Cave" and the Pentemple material, but I simply dont have the time to listen to the full thing on a regular basis. When I do though, I relax and enjoy myself to extents that I rarely find possible. Thats the effect of a good lengthy song if you ask me.

Manowar have made the longest song I know, "Achilles, Agony and Ectasy in Eight Parts". It's about 1/2 of an hour, but it is very clearly divided into different parts (for example one part containing only some light drumming). It's a decent song, and tells about the Trojan War.

But what btw about long ass song titles? Ayone who knows a title that can beat Bal-Sagoth's "The Dark Liege of Chaos is Unleashed At the Ensorcelled Shrine of A'Zura Kai (The Splendour of a Thousand Swords Gleaming Beneath the Blazon of the Hyperborean Empire: Part II)" ?

For me it depends entirely on the talent of the band. I saw Opeth mentioned earlier, and I agree that when I'm in the mood for it, I really like it. My Dying Bride's 'The Crown of Sympathy', and anything by Sunn O))) appeal to me as well when that is what the occasion calls for. For the most part however I steer away from really long songs.

Songs don't have to go forever to be long. I consider a 7-minute song to be long myself.

A lot of people don't have the attention spans for songs longer than four or five minutes, it seems. Then again, a lot of bands are such terrible songwriters that they have no business going beyond a few minutes anyway. It all depends, really. If it's something such as Burzum's "Det Som En Gang Var" or Venom's "At War With Satan", I definitely appreciate those...
