Portland death metallers Witch Vomit will release their third full length, Funeral Sanctum on April 5 through 20 Buck Spin. From the press release:

Quote:
Witch Vomit’s two previous releases, ‘Abhorrent Rapture’ and ‘Buried Deep In A Bottomless Grave’, solidified and elevated their position as one of current US Death Metal’s most potent and direct sources of expertly crafted cacophonous carnage. With a methodically relentless fervor and merciless aggression Witch Vomit have carved out a formidable reputation for barbarism with hooks so catchy they rend flesh from bone.

On new album ‘Funeral Sanctum’, Witch Vomit expand the dark melodicism buried within the butchery of past releases, now sharpened into black obsidian and causticly fused with the band’s hallmark brutality. The DNA within tracks such as ‘Blood of Abomination’ and ‘Dominion of a Darkened Realm’ invoke not the upbeat harmonies one hears in typical melodic Death Metal, but something more akin to the demonic evil might of early Dissection, gleaming in frozen darkness. The gore-soaked USDM ferocity remains the rotted core of Witch Vomit’s foundation.

Witch Vomit’s dominant stretch of dynamic evolution within the scope of their concentrated stylistic framework has reached a new pinnacle with ‘Funeral Sanctum’. The album’s intense focus and ceaseless riff storm unleashes a wave of bloodfreezing gratification carved with permanence into the blackest depths.

Tracklisting:
1. Dying Embers (Intro)
2. Endless Fall
3. Blood Of Abomination
4. Serpentine Shadows
5. Decaying Angelic Flesh
6. Black Wings Of Desolation
7. Dominion Of A Darkened Realm
8. Endarkened Spirits
9. Abject Silence (Interlude)
10. Funeral Sanctum

Blood of Abomination has been released as the first single:
Spoiler: show

This is definitely the most melodic Witch Vomit has ever sounded, I totally hear the comparison to Dissection (and melodic black metal in general). Definitely an interesting development in their sound, one that makes me curious to hear more of this album.

Tony and Jason are also in Torture Rack, who made a nice and primitively brutal Autopsy-esque album called "Primeval Onslaught" last year. Perhaps after that they wanted to something more melodic. I'm into it for sure.

As a big fan of Dissection and Sacramentum, I’m curious to see how the Swedish black metal influences will mesh with their brand of cavernous death metal. Im digging what I'm hearing so far.

Not too sure about the drum sound here, but the production is still miles better than Abhorrent Rapture. Really stoked about the more melodic route!

From that first single, I thought the more melodic approach worked out pretty well. This new album will definitely be an interesting one.

Why do people say things like this? You've heard 2 minutes of music and you're already confident the entire album is going to be one of the best things of the year out of literally thousands of albums released over the next 10 months?

Yeah... declaring anything top 10 or AOTY in the first quarter of the year is..... naive at best, lol. Seriously people are way too overboard with that shit.

I’m a huge Witch Vomit simp. So sue me. I’m pretty confident as their first album was top ten for me the year it came out.

I love Witch Vomit, however I'm not too sure about that direction...

Their previous material did nothing for me. This song kinda sounds like a typical melodic black/death metal band but with death metal growls instead of higher pitched black metal vocals you'd expect from this style. It's not bad but I need to hear more. Hopefully not all the songs are this length or it's going to be a very short album.

I am a fan of this band but thought the new song was just alright. Definitely trying for a new sound. Looking forward to hearing the rest of the album and seeing how it turns out.

I liked it...a lot! Wasn’t a huge fan before this but I really dig it. Kind of reminds me Intestine Baalism with just a right amount of melody without going overboard. Can’t wait to hear the entire album!

I like it, it reminds me a little bit of Edge of Sanity.

Seconding this one. I have a feeling this whole record's gonna be a homage to early EOS.

Almost as if the vocalist walked into the wrong gig! Definitely worth a closer look once it drops.

Just finished listening to it. I know I was a bit hesitant about the change of style but they pulled it off and greatly surpassed my expectations. I need to listen to it some more but I feel like this will be a top ten contender.

First listen through I’m not sure I like it better than the first but it is killer. I think multiple listens are needed. I’m always amazed at how they can make 28-33 min albums seems so full.

Good album. Surprised to hear some nods toward The Spectral Sorrows-era Edge of Sanity, but I'm all for it.

Yeah this is only like 10% more melodic. I feel like people are reallllly overplaying the sound change because of the whole "blue artwork" thing.

Even if the riff style is not that different overall, that slight tweak and a slightly “drier” production (to my ears, their older stuff has a way more “wet” production) works to bring things out more. To my ears, at least.

Regardless, their early stuff is great, but this is the best version of their sound, as I hear it. Even if it’s not that different, it’s still an outstanding album and a highlight of the year so far.
