Grey Waters- Broken

Out of all the obnoxious amount of side projects that Tim and D. have, I wish they would have kept this one. Really great depressive rock with some truly beautiful moments. Who knows, maybe one day they'll come back...

Altar of Oblivion - Sentenced in Absentia

Epic doom with a really strong sense of swing/groove, I guess - maybe not quite the phrases I'm aiming at. Whatever it is, it renders it rather catchy.

Tarkan - Dön Bebeğim. Nice song with excellent guitar and bass work. The vocals are pretty good too.

Vàli - Forlatt I've been getting into dark folk lately. I've basically always was looking or this kind of music but didn't know it actually had a name or that there were more albums similar to Ulver's Kveldssanger.

And his charismatic delivery is almost nearly as interesting. That's definitely one of my favorite Deris Helloween songs.

Enslaved - RIITIIR

And so it begins. Obsession, part infinity.

Evoken - Of Purest Absolution

This is right up there with Tending The Dire Hatred as one of my all-time favorite Evoken tracks. Absolutely bludgeoning as all hell. I really do want to find more bands / songs particularly in this vein.

My Dying Bride - The Barghest O' Whitby

I dunno about this one. It's pretty much the only thing they've done that I haven't immediately loved.

Nightwish - Taikatalvi

Skipping straight to the new album, because Nightwish already have a bloated track count on my Last.fm. More astute stalkers will also notice I skipped "Walking in the Air," because fuck that song.

At the Toronto show last week, the audience stood there for like ten minutes after the final bows doing the usual "one more song!" chants. I think what really tipped us off that there wasn't going to be an encore was when the roadie came and started disassembling the drum kit. :-P Great show, though.

If I were that roadie, I would've performed a song by myself. Hey, they asked for it!

Nightwish - Turn Loose the Mermaids

Considering the title's an homage to My Dying Bride and Tuomas says they were a major influence, you'd think it'd be all over the place. But it isn't.

Nightwish - Rest Calm

I read a review where someone described this song as "doomy." I nearly rage-shat myself.

Nightwish - Song of Myself

The sheer amount of vitriol aimed at this song puzzles me, and the only explanation I have is that these people have either never read the original poem, have no idea what the original poem's intent and meaning are, or have no idea that the song is meant to encapsulate the spirit of the poem.

Annihilator - Ultra-Motion

Is it a guitar? Is it a swarm of bees? Man may never know.

It plays some pretty good riffs, though.

Nope, it's because it sucks and is filled with awful voice overs. Nothing to do with the lyrical content - and I have read the poem, by the way.

I dread even imagining what the newest Nightwish must sound like. One thing I've noticed about all these "female fronted" bands--all the awful gimmick bands with "angelic" vocals and half-assed songwriting are all men with a token female singer who has no other talents besides C-cups. The ones that are actually metal have women who play instruments and participate in the songwriting process as equals.
