I'm listening to Penetralia at the moment. There's nothing melodeath about this album, but it's their best.

"Penetralia" -
Hypocrisy

Satanic death Hypocrisy is best Hypocrisy (though I do like Fourth Dimension).

Van Halen- Blood & Fire

At least we got one reunion album with Dave.

Dark Quarterer- Colossus of Argil

Holy shit. Loving it. Not as much doom as I had expected, but truly epic, thunderous heavy metal. Love the semi-classical refrains scattered throughout the album.

Satanic Warmaster - Fimbulwinter

Man this album fucking rules. Nazgul/Werwolf's signature sense of melody, but much faster/riffier/whateverer.

Cloud Rat - Qliphoth

Not bad...interesting lyrics, intense and visceral and unhinged music. I like it pretty well so far.

Unbelievably kickass power metal. This might be even better than their last one.

Been jamming the new Khemmis today. Not sure how I feel about the vox but everything else I like.

Also fell asleep to the new Eldamar last night. Album is very calming.

Blind Guardian - Tales from the Twilight World

The threshold between their older material and their truly classic run. I give it a spin every now and then, though I often prefer listening to later live renditions of these since Hansi's voice, which is among the weaker links on the original, is in top form on albums like Live.

"Traveler in Time" and "Lost in the Twilight Hall" are indisputable classics though.

I still consider it the best one.

Darkthrone-Artic Thunder

Great album, I posted Cromlech on my Facebook yesterday haha. Old school DM with an intense atmosphere and occasional keys. I have always liked it and it would be great to see Fenriz and Nocturno trying this short of stuff again, quite unlikely I am afraid.

I don't really get why it's so special though, mostly feels like a typical early 90's death metal album. Trying to broaden my musical library a bit so I've been downloading crazy amounts of stuff

(2016) Inquisition - Bloodshed Across the Empyrean Altar Beyond the Celestial Zenith.
Slooowly starting to click.
P.S: I did find myself whistling to Vortex from the Celestial Flying Throne of Storms and Bloodshed Across the Empyrean Altar Beyond the Celestial Zenith this morning.

The song structure on SJ deviates from the usual verse-chorus-verse-chorus structure that about any DM album back then followed though so I tend to disagree. Besides, I don't really know material similar to that album.

NP: Satan - Trial by Fire

These wicked eastern leads rule. Almost sounds like proto Blind Guardian or perhaps proto Artillery even.

I thought the riff blueprint felt pretty standard, but I'll give it a few more spins. The explanation might lie in that I do love my poppy Dismember style death metal though.

NP: Scent of Flesh - The Art of Beheading

strange that this band never got bigger, two solid albums and a great one

Nice, first song is legendary!

Panzerfaust has some interesting Celtic Frost influences.

Theocracy - A Call to Arms

This chorus is a bit on the cheery side, but hooooly fudge that opening riff rules. Also, that verse riff is probably their best out of all 4 albums. DAMN. This album is better than bleeds so far; it's also their heaviest. Less proggy, more thrashy, but the sig sound is there.

The level of melodicism and hooks is really quite something for an extreme metal album, I think it's super impressive. Hope you like it more and more.

Funnily, the more directly addictive one is (2004) Inquisition - Magnificent Glorification of Lucifer for me.

Reach from (2016) Neurosis - Fires Within Fires.
This one is been hard too but what a song! :np:

LOL. I just got this in the mail the other day and so far I really dig it. My wife likes it too so I can add that to wife-friendly-car-music haha. (She's actually starting to like some black metal so our future is looking quite bright, er bleak - depending on how you look at it.)

Alcest - Kodama

It's... okay. The back end of the album isn't very satisfying, with "Oiseaux de proie" sounding more like a mid-album track than a closer and "Onyx" being a decent-at-best ambient outro that goes on at least a minute too long. Only "Eclosion" and bits of the title track really stack up to the previous albums in this style.

Yeah, they're one of my favorites in the genre at this point. They seem to get disappointingly little attention beyond a few people, though, which is surprising considering the high production standards and all around craftsmanship. I guess lack of promotion has something to do with it.

Vanhelgd - Allt hopp är förbi

I'd have to double check if I was listening to the same band if it were not for the vocals. God damn this tune...perplexing to say the least. Amazing, and frustrating with the completely pointless silent part. The whole album is engrossing but it feels it will take much more spins to sink in properly.

Mithras - On Strange Loops

First time listening to these guys, not sure if it's a good starting point. It's a pretty good album with lots of atmosphere, but there's also a lot of...nothing. Seems to drop off severely on the back half. I'll give it a few more listens before I fully decide how I feel about it.
