Obituary - Obituary

So far, so good. I like it. I'm not much of a review writer, but its good stuff.

King of Asgard - The Nine Worlds Burn

The intro to this song reminds me of the LotR soundtrack. Anyway, definitely digging this so far. Just bought this album today at HMV's closing sale (still pretty fucking bummed about HMV shutting down, though you can see who a large part of their demographic was considering the metal section is so damn depleted now compared to the rest of the store) and this is my second listen to the full album. Supposedly this is their weaker album, in which case I'm interested to hear the rest of their stuff. Ended up ordering their 2017 album so we'll see how they compare.

Disciplina Kičme - Nemoj

Been exploring Yugoslavian post-punk/new wave and holy shit what have I been missing all my life. Probably one of the best scenes in the genre. Also, stainedclass2112 should check it out, as it's very bass-dominated, and sounds a bit like Pork Soda, too IMO. ;)

Morgoth- Selected Killing

This Marc Grewe fellow sure sounds a lot like Martin Van Drunen

Aldaria - Another Life

I just came across this band, which is apparently an Avantasia-esque metal opera project. Lione, Blad, and Georgiou are just a few of the vocalists.

Ooooohhh, I'm soooo gonna give that a listen! I'll post about it later!

Too late, I'm posting it now:

Disciplina Kičme - Sviđa Mi Se Da Ti Ne Bude Prijatno

So yeah, this is some of the weirdest stuff ever, Sepulchrave, haha. However, it's weirdly awesome. The whole thing is like this big jam session, and it's kinda terrible, but it's a lot of fun with its wacky wackiness. I love how the guitarist (...there IS a guitarist right?) scratches the strings up at the tuning posts all the time, lol. The bass is all over the place with cool slap licks and solos with random harmonics and just overall buffoonery. I'm a bit indifferent on it, but it's certainly entertaining. Oh, and the vocals crack me up

Behemoth - The Satanist

Hadn't heard this yet; coworker won't shut up about it. Not too bad so far.

Carcass - Buried Dreams

That guitar tone sounds so evil.

Defeated Sanity - Into the Soil

Ultra-heavy, groovy, slamming brutal death metal from Germany. Caught them live this past Monday and their set was intense. The crowd was slamming and moshing all throughout. I had to retreat to the back to avoid further injuries.

Also probably the best tremolo picked riff in the whole death metal  (aside maybe Override the overture..)

Peste Noire - Ballade cuntre les anemis de la France - de François Villon

Bad people can make good music.. how the hell he plays the guitar like this? The ending riffs are wonderful

Negura Bunget - Om

In memory of Negru, I've dusted this off and played it after a while away. Don't know why I left it so long. This is a really interesting album, mixing black metal with some very avant-garde touches. I'm not a massive fan of the band in general, but I do like this one. Hard to believe it's already 11 years old. R.I.P. Negru.

Neurosis - Falling Unknown

I'm depressed as shit, so here's something optimistic to start the workday. The violin section towards the end turning into a vocals-only moment before the final riff that you just know must arrive... that is such a wonderful songwriting curveball.

Now this is a pretty cool genre combo!

Yeah the jaminess is what reminded me of Primus the most. And no, there's no guitarist - this is entirely bass-based (hah).

Asphyx - Last One On Earth (1992)

Noisy old school death metal with doomy passages ... simply crushing.

Imperium Dekadenz - Dis Manibus

Just picked this up this week and on my 2nd-3rd listen. Wouldn't have been among 2016 favourites anyway, but still enjoyable melodic bm and like the atmosphere.

I figured as much!! How weird! Very interesting though, and I certainly enjoyed listening to it.

sometimes, a bit of melancholic alt rock is all you need

Budgie - Zoom Club

One of the heaviest, most badass, churning chugging hell-yeah-this-is-the-best-freaking-jam-ever songs of the 70's. I freaking love that gigantic, looming guitar riff (with that pounding bass too) as it stomps over all who oppose with its burly swinging badassery. The intro still gives me the chills, and the jam in the middle is too cool. I swear Tony Bourge is the slightly weirder long lost twin brother of Tony Iommi. YUSSSSSS

Korpse - Pull the Flood

The OSDM Korpse are - I want to say - criminally underrated, but everyone who actually rates them rates them very highly. Perhaps underexposed is more accurate; both of their records are just superb riff-tastic, inventive gems. For my money their easily up there with Entombed, Autopsy and even Bolt Thrower as my favourites.

Wolfbrigade - Peace Of Mind

Someone here mockingly deride Wolfbrigade as "stadium d-beat," which is fine with me -- I dig their big brash hooky sound.

Grief - ...And Man Becomes The Hunted

I have a feeling Grief had a bigger influence on modern Blackened Sludge over bands like Eyehategod. So much hate in this draggy, sludgy knuckle dragging record.

Horrendous - Ecdysis

Haven't listened to this in two years and holy hell, I forgot how insanely good it is. Bummed I won't be seeing them on the Decibel tour.

Cannibal Corpse- Bloodthirst.

While my personal favorite CC album is Torture, this fucker is no slouch. The first 3 songs are so consummate that the rest of the songs almost completely pale; nothing but catchy, high velocity death metal with a sea of whirling, turning riffs.

Mastodon - Ancient Kingdom

Been listening to this album all day. This may be a little bit early to say, but could this be the best Mastodon album ever? I cannot really put it into words yet, but I just know I'm enamored with it. If anything it's their most personal album yet. Powerful stuff.

Running Wild - Soulless

I've been listening to nothing but German power metal all day. Running Wild hits the spot so damn well. The riffs!

One of the best Dan Swano' projects so far. Solid death metal played by starry lineup.

Megadeth - In My Darkest Hour

One of my favorite songs from my favorite thrash album of all time. Seeing it live was pretty darn intense, and the biggest pit in the entire show happened during this song. Good times

Death Angel - The Dream Calls for Blood

Nowadays, they are probably the most consistent thrash band from the old guard alongside Overkill. Their last 3 records are all fucking solid with moments of pure awesomeness.

Year of the Goat - The Emma

Brighter, more expansive and more imaginative than the debut, with beautifully retro guitar riffs. This band is going places.
