Jupiter "The History of Genesis"

Top-notch stuff... I should've checked this band out a couple of years ago.

The Agonist - As Above, So Below

Final song on Eye of Providence, longest song (by quite a bit) on the album, and probably my favorite. Though I might change my mind after more listens.

Thundersteel - Anger on the Road

This is actually pretty good speed/trad metal from this Serbian band's debut. The vocalist has a slight Zak Stevens sound in his voice at times. I'm digging it.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - The Mercy Seat

This song has some of the most powerfully evocative imagery I've heard in any song. In fact, the lyrics are 80% of the reason I like it... (Lyrical quote in spoiler)

Spoiler: show
"In Heaven His throne is made of gold
The ark of his Testament is stowed
A throne from which I'm told
All history does unfold.
Down here it's made of wood and wire
And my body is on fire
And God is never far away.

Into the mercy seat I climb
My head is shaved, my head is wired
And like a moth that tries
To enter the bright eye
So I go shuffling out of life
Just to hide in death awhile
And anyway I never lied."

It's apparently supposed to be about an inmate on death row. Just riveting stuff

Mana Mana - Maria Magdalena

This is the Maria Magdalena/Vaarallista -seven inch version. I always liked more of the version in Totuus Palaa, but this holds its place very well too. Depressive music at its finest.

Acherontas - Ma Ion

This is glorious as fuck. A perfect sample is The Awakening of Astral Orphic Mysteries..., where the vocalist just speaks majestically over the music for 10 minutes

Hawkwind - Song of the Swords, off Chronicles of the Black Sword

First time listening to Hawkwind. Not bad. Not bad at all.

Sunken Colony - Rite of Passage

I don't pull out this demo too often, but every time that I do, I'm always impressed. This is fantastic Starcraft-themed death metal that sounds like the guy behind it listened to a lot of Gorguts and Atheist. The bass-playing is incredible, and the music is pretty catchy. I thought this band used to be on the Archives, but I guess not? In any case, I think a lot of people here would dig them.

Enforcer - Destroyer

The new album comes right out of the shoot strong and heavy. I really like this band and their approach to speed metal. The solos are sick, too.

Forbidden - Out of Body (Out of Mind)

Kick ass thrash from a band that is not one that is not mentioned when one talks of great thrash bands. Too bad they arrived a bit too late to make that much of an impact.

That album would get a 90% from me, but I haven't bothered to get around to reviewing it. I'd have to really be in the zone to do it justice.

Drawn and Quartered - Feeding Hell's Furnace

DaQ sound fresh on every release and when they play live, they crush. So much respect for these guys. Always seeing them at shows they aren't billed on, supporting the touring bands. Excellent fucking Metal band.

Devathorn - Vritra
Acherontas - Ma IoN (Formula's of Reptilian Unification)

Nuclear hell frost - eternal hell frost freezing metal fuck of death.. Somethin like that, I dunno.
Not bad, pretty generic blackthrash. It's not great, but better than Pantera for sure.

SUBTERRANEAN MASQUERADE - The Great Bazaar

Such a brilliant album. Beautiful sound they managed to achieve on this one.

GYZE - Black Bride

Sorta happy with this one. They jettisoned the metalcore garbage that plagued their debut and went full-on neoclassical, but unfortunately the mastering job on this is horrendous.

Ooh neat. Ironically I was just looking for samples of that thing less than ten minutes ago. Good to know it will be worth the wait when I finally procure it.

Slayer - Skeleton Christ

Maybe I'm weird, but I think Christ Illusion is absolutely worth listening to. Yeah it's not as good as the first five/six but nobody thinks it is. Lombardo just carries some good juju with him I think.

Nice. I have Hail Infernal Darkness - definitely good. I've always thought they sounded a bit like Incantation. Would you agree?

Holy Mother - The River

Blazing fast speed metal that's totally relentless. Makes me think of Riot's Thundersteel on crack. :headbang:

Agalloch - ...And the Great Cold Death of the Earth

This is my first time listening to Agalloch, and I really like what I hear. It has this really cool understated, humble vibe to it, like it's willing to just chill out and let itself be appreciated, rather than having to impose and make a forceful impression. I particularly like the atmospheric electric guitar and the vocalist's disaffected drawl.

Decided to check out post-SotH Manowar. I think that decision has already cost me two or three IQ points. :(
