Rotting Christ - Lucifer Over Athens (Disc 1)

I love this band, and a live album was long overdue. On my first listen now, I'm sure it won't disappoint.

I don't think I could choose a favorite from that album. It's practically flawless!

Lindskold/Fantome de Sang - Our Enemy has Returned

I don't think I like this. It's like if Summoning decided to try to become a noise project.

Veiled in Scarlet - The Underworld

Pretty nice single - pity half the band quit after it was released.

Is that an audio album? I don't care for live albums, except it's a dvd. I'd prefer to see the band play instead.

NP : Embrional - The Devil Inside

Slightly technical old school death metal or rather old school death metal with technical bits. I love how they manage to make it sound very dark, despite being technical.

I bought the 2 CD version, not sure if a dvd exists. I always like to hear the differences in live versions of songs from their studio counterparts. Especially from bands with extensive discographies like RC.

Just finished my first listen of the new Pentagram - Curious Volume. This is only the 2nd album from them that I've heard. But it's not bad, really bluesy sound is the best way to describe it.

Cormorant - Dwellings

Man, the little bass grooves on Funambulist at the 7 minute mark are just perfect. They never fail to put a smile on my face. I've been listening to this a lot the past year: it may have surpassed Metazoa as my favorite of theirs.

Oh, and The Confusion of Tongues is a fucking perfect instrumental. Arthur is a phenomenal bassist. It's just loud enough in the mix that you can choose to focus on it if you really want to and steps away from the guitars only rarely. I know I'm gushing, but this is an amazing album. There's no way they''ll be able to top their previous albums without him.

Borealis - Past The Veil

This album is too good! Especially the first half. Not too big into progressive stuff in general, but this album works really well.

I saw them at Wacken, but I didn't enjoy it too much. Granted, I'm not the biggest Bloodbath fan, but I thought they were one of the only bands of the weekend that didn't sound all that good. Only song I really dug was "Eaten", which is definitely my favourite song of theirs.

Threshold - Watchtower on the Moon

Gonna see these guys live this weekend! Their setlist doesn't seem to change a lot, so I'll prepare a bit for it. It's mostly stuff from the last three albums, but that's fine with me. Would also have liked to hear a song like "The Ravages Of Time", but at least they play one track from "Subsurface", which is great because I absolutely love this album. First time I'll hear their pre-March-of-Progress material with Wilson as singer as well.

Crystal Eyes - The Power Behind the Throne

Gleeful, slick power metal with the low-fi vocals and cheesy sci fi/fantasy themes the genre was fun for back in the day, but with great, 80s styled riffs. A marriage of two worlds.

Kraftwerk - Tour de France [Live 2008 version]. I like it better than the original version, it sounds more energetic without losing its charm.

I was re watching Sinister for the second time (I saw it back in 2012). This time I noticed how great the music was. Had to look it up and was surprised to learn that it mostly consisted of parts/sections of Ulver's Silence Teaches You How to Sing. I decided to go through the rest of the bands discography. I'm currently listening to Bergtatt, a great mix of black metal and haunting neofolk passages. I feel like I've been missing out on a lot.

Liturgy - The Ark Work

First time listening to this band. I've heard the drummer Greg Fox a few times, mostly improv stuff, and was always really impressed. Saw him do a trio with Trevor Dunn (Mr Bungle) and Colin Stetson on sax, and it was totally engaging, like a weird cross of extreme metal and free-jazz.

This, on the other hand, is pretty bullshit as far as I can tell. A lot of stroking and never cumming. Minor modes get pounded for scores of minutes a time, and never really pay off to anything worthwhile. The singer has a monotone whine that not only doesn't service the music, it actively dissuades me from believing any of this is more than a project of desperate boredom, of someone trying in vain to force blood out of a particularly bland turnip. By comparison, stack it up against the Dodheimsgard record, which has the exact opposite problem -- LOADS of ambition and originality that might turn folks off because it has too many disparate ideas. Liturgy sound like they don't have enough, and (over) compensate by banging the shit out of them.

Who knows, maybe if I listen more, stuff will seem better.

Anguish by Pact of Solitude off of their sole 2-song EP, Pain and Passion. I'm very surprised that absolutely no one seems to know about this project; it has Smaug from Spanish black metal band Primigenium. Anyways, it's as close as you can possibly come to Katatonia during their Jhva Elohim Meth/Dance of December Souls phase, but with even more black metal influence, especially in the vocals. Very similar type of dreamy production/riffs though.

Ludicra - Last Train

Weirdly the introduction and lead riff of this song reminds me of an early Burzum track I remember hearing a Xasthur cover of a while back. Brilliant stuff mind. I'm sad that this band is lost to the sands of time but listening to their classic records has me salivating in anticipation of the new Vhol.

NP: Jesu-silver

haven't heard this track in a long while, always felt there was a lot of power in those guitar riffs and melodies. not sure why i stopped listening to this band and shoegaze/metal stuff in general. great atmosphere in it

Motorhead - Sympathy for the Devil

Even at 70 Lemmy's voice still sounds vicious and powerful. Definitely one of the better covers of this song I have heard and think the song is especially fitting for Lemmy.

Nile - What Should Not Be Unearthed

All I can say is that this record is a breath of fresh air. Some might complain that it isn't as "brutal" as some of the older Nile records but I say that it's just as crisp and violent as the before.

I actually had to listen to the record a couple of times before he made me feel that way. It's sort of like I had to turn my head sideways to look at the record from a different angle. Nonetheless, I enjoy the hell out of that record. Hopefully it'll hit you, as it did me.

Metallica - Death Magnetic

Amidst all the deserved criticism these guys have faced, people rarely acknowledge James' improvement in the vocals department. Oh, and I still like this album
