Hoth - The Unholy Conception

Still one of my all-time favorite black/death songs. The atmosphere that this band creates is amazing.

A good album favorite song would have to be Legend of a Banished Man.

Their best album for sure.

I don't know about best (WOoOS wins in that regard), but "Legend of a Banished Man" is one of their best songs for sure. That one riff!

NP: Mare Cognitum - Phobos Monolith

This album is so good. I've been going for longer atmospheric music lately and this just hits the spot so well. But my CD still isn't here!

Vivaldi - Summer (Presto)

The sense of intensity and urgency in this is..... Well, pretty much unparalleled, as far I know.

Lacerta - Mind Processor

Local death metal from my area. Lots of sharp leads and riffs with a good production.

Sigh - Suicidogenic

Sigh's riffing relies more heavily on traditional speed metal ways than your average second wave band, but they sure aren't failing to invoke the epic scope and compositional spectacle that 90s bm is known for.

Blasphemy - Fallen Angel of Doom

I've been meaning to look deeper into, and explore "war metal/bestial black metal" for awhile now as it appeals heavily to me. Figured starting with a classic was a wise idea. Digging it a lot. I certainly understand how the term "bestial" came about. It's fucking vicious.

Hadez - Morituri te Salutant

This album would have benefited a lot from a not-so-crappy production. Very raw death metal

Bongripper - Endless

The new(ish) record is exceeding my expectations now that I've finally gotten around to hearing it - at first it sounded a bit re-hashed, but there's actually more substance to it. Might make up for Anaal Nathrakh's new one being... less than promising.

Enslaved - Monumension
I've been working my way through Enslaved chronologically to re-aquaint myself with their discography over the last few days. This and Below the Lights, if I remember the order correctly, will be today's albums. Monumension is one of my least-listened to Enslaved records, despite it sounding perfectly enjoyable so far.

(2000) Enslaved - Mardraum (Beyond The Within) and (2001) Enslaved - Monumension are the ones I listen to less too.

Getting into 1349, as I am seeing them live in the Spring. Brutal and raw black metal, but still catchy!

It's a strange band for me. Sometimes the music "clicks" but usually goes from one hear to the other one.

The roaring. This album is very amazing. I've seen them play live, and they can do what I hear on this album after playing for over an hour straight. The strength of this band is huge. PLAY THIS LOUD AND PUSH THE BASS.

I have to check out their new albums.

EDIT: Now I'm listening to Graveland - Ogień przebudzenia.
It's a re-recording of the album Fire of Awakening and it's absolutely brilliant. Better vocals, better drums, better choirs. The only thing that isn't better than the original is the guitars, which sounded heavy as fuck on the original recording, but they still sound quite nice here. Excellent stuff, and continues to uphold the faith I hold in Robert Darken. I may not agree with his political views, and I'm not convinced about his war in the woods (though he unarguably looks better than Vikernes' shitty attempt at playing viking), but goddamn can the man compose some brilliant, passionate music.

So, better than the original?

Deathspell Omega - Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice
I've been loving this album a lot recently. The atmosphere and lyrics are helluva insane and beautiful. A little grievance I have is the abrupt transition from chanting back to full-on blasting in Carnal Malefactor, where I find it breaks the haunting atmosphere, but I can live with it.
And I've also been looping "Third Prayer" a ton, that riffing is amazing. Sounds a lot like the riff midway into Arckanum's song Þyrpas Ulfar.

Personally, their best album.

Extol - Human Frailtie's Grave
It's really interesting how much better I find this album all of a sudden. I used to just regard it as "that brutal Extol album that's good, but samey-sounding." It's amazing how wrong I was after giving it a listen again for the first time in a quite a while. Also, I didn't notice until just now, but the production job on this album is actually one of the best I've ever heard. Every single instrument is so clear and perfectly balanced all the way through.

Should listen to this.

Beer Baron wrote:

It's perfectly fine to me.

Electric Wizard - Incense for the Damned
Contrary to my moaning on and on about the guitar tone a few months ago, the new Electric Wizard album is turning out to be quite reasonable. So far, it's been mostly more of the same, but that's not really a problem. Witchcult Today part-three.

The new album is nice.

Blut Aus Nord - MoRT - Chapters VII-VIII
The closing section of VII and the opening of VIII are probably the most tangible recreation of an epileptic fit I have ever heard; almost disconcertingly seizure-like. I can see why this record isn't among the bands most highly rated, as it's very inaccessible and challenging, but it's definitely enjoyable in its way.

So, better than the original?

Ehh, depends. It's a lot different. The guitars aren't quite as heavy or dominating at in the original, but it's a lot more folky with actual choirs this time around, instead of the synth-choirs. So that's a plus. The drum programming sounds better as well. So eh. Hard to say since both sound so different, yet both are great versions. I do really like the heaviness of the original recording, but the new one is also great in its folkier way. You could say it sounds more like a typical Graveland album now.

I'd recommend giving it a listen at least. I think Rob is one of the better musicians out there when it comes to the often hit-or-miss art of rerecording.

Anyway,

Obituary - Inked in Blood

Listening to the stream of it. Not bad so far, though it does sound like a slightly more energetic same old, same old. If that makes any sense. Some cool groove riffs though.

Celtic Frost - Circle of the Tyrants

First time I've actually had the time or care to actually sit down and enjoy some metal. I haven't been listening to music much lately, even opting for talk radio or mere silence during my work commute. I think it's about time to cut that shit out.

Allen/Lande - Down From the Mountain

It's a non shitty Allen/Lande album! I've always been disappointed with this project considering Jorn Lande and Russel Allen are some of my favourite singers in all of metal (Kelly Sundown Carpenter completes the unholy trifecta). The project had oodles of unrealized potential which they finally achieved by changing the main songwriter. Both singers absolutely own this track and Jorn sounds positively vicious.

Sonata Arctica - Blank File 2014

I like it. I can see why you wouldn't, and the original's obviously better, but this is pretty fun anyway just for the great production value and how good Tony sounds now.

Enslaved - Roots of the Mountain

Spent the last few weeks covering as much of Enslaved's discography as I have (Hordanes Land + all the full-length's) consecutively. Drawing to a close now, with Riitiir, which is still every bit as good as it was when it came out. Not sure which band to travel through next.

I really dig that era of DsO. Sure it's Darkthrone worship or whatever, but Inquisitors has some seriously killer riffs.

NP: Bruce Springsteen - 'Used Cars' from Nebraska

Always thought of Springsteen as that obnoxious 'Born in the USA' guy, but I've really been into this LP lately. Very American sounding folk about downtrodden and hopeless characters.

Candlemass - Dark Reflection

Very nimble, tight guitarwork for this band - you can see the progression over the years. Tales of Creation is a very well done album full of striking, powerful songs.

It's been what, 5, 6 years since I listened to this record? Damn. Still as fine as it was upon first listening to it (in fact, one of the prog records that resonate most with me). I also nearly forgot how amazing Lande is.
