I could never get into Ellorsith too well, but Mannveira are really good.

Чёрный Обелиск (Black Obelisk) - Apocalypse

Great song by Black Obelisk with Anatoly Krupnov on vocals, bass.
Many thanks to the guy who translated to me the lyrics of this track from Russian to English.

Carcass - R__K The Vote

If you haven't heard of Swansong, you'd imagine it to be an abomination what with all the negative rep people are throwing at it. But I'm in the minority who think it's an excellent album. Sure, it doesn't surpass the brilliance of 'Heartwork' but the riffs are still razor sharp on this release and their sound here doesn't reek of any signs of selling out. So what's the fuss all about?

Children of Bodom - Children of Bodom

COB was at their best when they played this neo-classical/melodic death/black metal fusion. Alas they went the Metallica route and dumbed down their sound to appeal to a larger audience.

I don't mind Swansong, it's a decent record as far as I'm concerned, but I guess the flak it gets is that it's far away even from the melodic death style of Heartwork, let alone Necroticism or what came before. A big shift in sound.

NP: Midnight - Shox of Violence
Venom was fun, and this is even more fun. Good stuff to listen to at work.

Behexen - The Poisonous Path (2016)

Always dismissed this band because I (wrongfully) assumed that they played generic norsecore. Couple of songs in I went "huh, this pretty fucking good actually". It maintains a sinister ritualistic atmosphere amidst all the blasting & that huge HM-2 (not sure though) guitar tone.

I'll go a little further with this and say that Hatebreeder to date is CoB's finest hour, and pursuing this Malmsteen and power metal-inspired direction with a heavier musical feel and harsh vocals may have cemented CoB as an enduringly great band rather than one that merely flirted with greatness for awhile.

Ozzy Osbourne - "Mr. Crowley"

Sure Randy Rhoads has rightfully been praised as a master lead guitarist/soloist, but a song like "Mr. Crowley" shows that he also had quite a knack for constructing amazing riffs.

Wytch Hazel - More than Conquerors

If you haven't had the pleasure, try out the above track, or 'Freedom Battle'. Bad Omen have a sampler out at the moment with two tracks on (under 'pay what you like' on bandcamp)

It's just so positive - great big vocal harmonies, great big guitar / bass lines, and lyrics that you can actually sing along to. The band obviously love their classic 70s heavy rock, and for a change you get that from the music, not the liner notes. Great band !

Overkill - Our Finest Hour

This is a pretty fun album so far. It's a bit messy and hodge-podge, but actually in an enjoyable way. Lots of energy.

I can second this. :) Great album. My wife and I find ourselves singing the "oh no" part from the last song at one another often hahaha.

I'm the same with 'Mighty King' and 'More than Conquerors' - my wife, however, doesn't quite see the magic ! "This is like when you get your Saxon LPs out, stop it !"

OT - Alcest - Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde

It's night time, there's a bit of weather blowing in, chickens & cats are asleep. Time for some jangly French rest music.

LOL.

(I love that Alcest album by the way. I got to see them just a little while ago in Oakland which was a lot of fun and I got to have my Kodama CD signed by Neige.)

Legend - From the Fjords

This album is fantastic. I'd love to own an LP copy one day, but even the bootlegs go for insane prices, so I'm not going to hold my breath.

From the Fjords does rule. I remember first hearing "The Destroyer" and being blown away. It has this epic and borderline 70's prog feel to it, that album does. I should go listen again; it's been a while.

Oh I definitely concur. Hatebreeder is my most favorite COB album as it contains my most favorite tracks of theirs, "Bed of Razors".

Fear Factory - What Will Become?

I just bought a copy and listened to 'Digimortal' for the first time after avoiding it for years. Not as bad as people make it out to be.

Zodiac - Down

This kind of bluesy, driving hard rock is timeless. Bands can update it with a modern production and new lyrics and what not and it sounds fresh and fun if you do it right.

Wormed - Krigshu (2016)
Brutal/Tech Death

Well what do you know, innovative brutal death in 2016. That's quite a feat in itself. Distinctive almost atmospheric riffing, inhuman 'vocals' even by brutal death standards (imagine a feral alien hatefucking a vacuum cleaner!), relentless yet tasteful drumming, off-kilter grooves, sci-fi bells & whistles. It's a LOT to take in & definitely isn't for everybody but after all is said & done this is just a goddamn masterpiece.

That song's really fantastic. Lyrically silly but musically so damn good - easily one of the best Tony Martin era tracks.

Great album! Been getting a kick out of that one again lately.

NP: Virgin Steele - Adorned with the Rising Cobra (Barbaric remix version)

While I find the idea of having one remixed and one remastered version of this album silly, this remixed version sounds actually killer. This 2017 reissue sounds more organic and you can hear the guitars well this time. :metal:
