Something's not right. I'm probably dead and in pinch harmonics hell. But hey, it ain't bad, quite the contrary.

I saw them live some years ago and they were GREAT at first listen.

Nothing. My brother took out ALL the CD-RWs from the car's CD player. :(

Father John Misty - Birdie

Utterly compelling listen. Slow and atmospheric and well written lyrically.

Satan's Hallow - Satan's Hallow

Holy shit. Classic heavy metal, full of attitude and exuberance with music to match.

Havok - Conformicide

I honestly think this is the worst album I've heard all year. Everything (except maybe the vocals) pretty much epitomizes the term "butt-thrash" in my mind. I think I'm gonna puke.

Yeah, that EP was fantastic. A drastic improvement over their past work imho.

Angel Sword - Rebels Beyond the Pale

Yeah - bit of the same assessment as last time I tried this. Pretty cool riffing going on, but the vocals just sound like he's trying way too hard to be Mark Shelton or some other weird old singer. Doesn't sound authentic to me. The vibe is a bit like that as a whole, just a bit too try hard and posturing to really grip me. Talented players though for sure.

I take back what I just said about Conformicide.

This is actually kind of excruciating to listen to :ugh:.

Angel Sword is awesome!

Burzum - Jesu død

Been years I think since I have played this.
The start og this song always gives me shivers
Figured it was fitting today on Kittelsen's 160 years anniversary

Isis - Panopticon

I should really check out the rest of their discography at this point. Until then however this will suffice.

Did I mention that this is the best thing ever?

Some of these songs are fairly cool. They're better when they keep it uptempo. I think I'd like this more live. I dunno though, the vocals are just not good. I like this rougher style, but he sings the same line on like every song and it's getting irritating.

I remember the vocals completely ruining them for me as well but I'm gonna pull it up and sample now. I was so excited about these guys because of the cover art and various other references to Manilla Road. I think I was even excited up to the point where the vocals came in. Which adds up because this album starts with a fucking cracking riff...

You know what, the vocals aren't bothering me much at all. I think like Empyreal said, it's going to depend on whether he can vary his lines a little bit. It's obvious very quickly that there's not going to be any spectrum to his voice, so he'll have to play with the delivery and pacing. I'm gonna let this play!

Sorry Empyreal, I wanted to back you up on the dogshit vocals!

Angel Sword - Break the Chains

Okay...wow. Damn. This is my shit! Great triumphant atmosphere. I really dig the stripped back approach of these guys. Like when he's soloing and you just get rhythm section underneath. Killer.

Allow me to describe the vocals: Imagine Mark Shelton's voice is a 3D image. Now make it 2D. That's homie from Angel Sword.

Yeah, I was lukewarm about the whole album really. Some cool riffs but it didn't really grab me the way other similar bands have. Not much there I can't find on a Manilla Road album done way better, honestly. It's a shame it seems so inauthentic to me because I'm sure they're perfectly cool guys. But the music just sounds like 'look, we can play epic heavy metal too.' Just kinda weak.

I've been wanting to pick this up for the longest time. Now that I have it, I get to have fun re-introducing myself to it. The guitars are so sharp sounding.

Nightcrawler said this had the most of Ron's singing, so I'm preparing for the worst.

Panopticon truly is the best of their output, although pretty much all of their work is really good.

Mithridatic - Miserable Miracle

Very good death metal! Vocals are more of a scream than a growl, giving it a black metal edge. The music is powerful, though, and it rarely relents.

I think Ron's vocals are substantially better than on Time Does Not Heal. Leave Scars may well be their best album, but the production is quite bad. But stuff like "No One Answers" and the title track just straight up destroy.

NP:
Savage Messiah - The Fateful Dark
These guys should have a new album coming out fairly soon, looking forward to it. This is not their best work, but it's still very solid heavy/thrash, at times super damn catchy and has REALLY good guitar leads.

Kreator - Gods of Violence

This sounds like melodeath with thrash vocals. I'm not familiar with Kreator at all, so has their sound evolved in recent years?

^Depends on your definition of "recent years". Since 2001's Violent Revolution, they've been adding a lot of melodic and catchy elements to their thrash. But I don't think that they've evolved THAT much after finding the blueprint on that and Enemy of God, maybe just turning more "epic". And for the record, of their last five, I only really like Violent Revolution and Hordes of Chaos.

I never listened to Kreator before I came across a random song from a few years ago the other day and I thought it sounded really cool. I just came across their new singles and I'm really liking them as well. I don't really like thrash, so I was surprised that I really enjoyed the songs so much.

"Alone" by onj. It's "post" music. If you're into Godspeed and/or Isis type stuff. I really liked their EP from 2014 and this song is a step up. I'm excited to see them live on the 12th next month. It will be their album release show.

I got to premiere the first song from the album on my blog: https://www.pets-sounds.com/features/20 ... leepwalker

I still wonder how it's possible that the future Borknagar guitarist made something this twisted..

I like it quite a bit! It's a bit more boneheaded than some of the stuff they were putting out on 7s in the late 80s. Seems like they scaled back their complexity, but for me that only makes the individual moments of glory hit harder. I also have to say I'm with Wily on the guitar tone, I adore it. I've always described the guitars on Envenom as sounding like a small Japanese motorcycle engine roaring through a crowded metropolis.

This album is fucking great. I'm kinda pissed how much time I spent not buying new music and getting more stuff. I missed so many great albums from so many great bands and I'm kicking myself for it now. I have gone on a minor splurge and bought around eight albums in the last few weeks (after about three years of buying almost nothing), and pretty much all of them have been awesome.
