The Drowning - Dawn of Sorrow

So, this is one of the best doom songs I have ever heard. I can't believe I just discovered these guys last night. I might have to throw this album into my top 5.

Nice! That's a good album and one of their strongest. Their whole discography is very good though and they don't have a weak album. I highly recommend their split with My Silent Wake (which you can find online for a criminally low price...). That split has some of both bands' best material on it IMO.

Agent Steel - Indestructive

Reminds me of Helloween, vocals at least.
Killer stuff though!

My Silent Wake - Of Fury

Thanks for the rec, Kerrick! I might have to snag that split.

Rush - Cut To The Chase

This album hits the spot around these holiday months. Just heavy, consonant, clean-sounding rock with great melodies.

Tears of Tragedy "Statice"

Sounds pretty good so far. Loud as fuck though, but not as bad as its predecessor.

Sarcoptes - Songs and Dances of Death

This is pretty cool. I normally think of black/thrash as one of the more primitive types of metal, so it's an interesting idea to take this genre into a more progressive direction.

I can relate. Such an awesome song.

Napalm Death - Smear Campaign

One of their absolute best albums, I can't get over how savage it is.

Manticora - 1946. Melancholic [Betrayal]

Doesn't seem to be a lot of love for this band. I guess they're in a bit of a strange niche for power metal: far more aggressive than your standard Euro power, but not really good enough to attract the attention of non-Euro power fans. Anyways this album is pretty good, but I'm still learning a lot of the songs. My favourite one is definitely "2004. Help Me Like No One Can [Apathy]", if I'm thinking of the right one.

Desaster - Oath of an Iron Ritual

Decent black/thrash. Nothing crazy memorable.

^ I'm still freaking the fuck out over that. In my opinion it's absolutely fan-flipping-tastic. I still need to dig into more black thrash though.

Black/thrash could mean a lot of things. A lot of times I seem to notice it's just really raw thrash like early Sodom or Kreator, but sometimes you get bands like Desaster who actually blend the two genres. That said, I haven't actually heard the new Desaster, and of the stuff I do know, I prefer their more "normal" thrash album (Divine Blasphemies) to the previous two that have a much stronger black metal presence. There are some really good bands in the niche though. Black Fast is a modern band that's been getting hyped up a lot and they're good enough to deserve it. I was also a pretty huge fan of Witchaven back in the late 00s but I feel like they dropped off a bit after Terrorstorm.

I was recommended Destroyer 666 and Nifelheim, both of which I'll be delving into shortly. With my recent opening up of my music taste, I've really been striking gold in places that really surprise me, so I should be finding some cool stuff within the realms of extreme metal from now on. I tried out that new Inquisition album earlier and I thought it was awesome. That's a sentence that you'd never see me typing about 6 months ago.

Oh, and I like None So Vile. What the fuck does that mean?

Pretty good HM-2 death metal from this year.

Enjoying some Demoncy - Empire of the Fallen Angel (Eternal Black Dominion), after that the debut Mayhem album is coming. Very curious to here this live album on the 15th of this month. Hope they can recapture the atmosphere to some extent.

Kamelot - Center of the Universe

Kamelot rules. Shamelessly cheesy album cover! Still a great album, inspired and energetic. I have not kept up much since Roy left though...

That's a great track and Karevik > Khan. Fight me.

Ne Obliviscaris - Citadel

Their crowd funding thing was dumb, but they make quality music.

Karevik is talented, but he is nowhere close to Roy Khan, and Haven was a pretty weak album for their standard. The Black Halo is still how I define Kamelot, personally...

Khan is good and all, but he just doesn't blow me out of the water. I think Seventh Wonder showcases Karevik's ability more than Kamelot does. I wish Kamelot would do a live album/re-recordings with Karevik.

Rogash - Nightmares

This was a nice find!

Congrats SC! Welcome to extreme metal.

Unearth - Bloodlust of the Human Condition

My 2 Unearth CDs just arrived by mail, (The Stings of Conscience, The Oncoming Storm) and by that they reminded me of how hard Unearth can kick asses.

Lamb of God - Engage the Fear Machine

One of the best tracks on the album, LoG did a really great job with their recent release.

Inquisition - Invoking The Majestic Throne Of Satan

A dry, hot season in hell. The best album from one of the best modern BM bands.

Yeah, in Kamelot he's just trying to imitate Khan. Doing a pretty good job of it, too - though I think Khan's deeper midrange and silkier, softer moments add more depth to his performance that Karevik hasn't gotten yet. I wasn't really a fan of Seventh Wonder though.

Bruce Dickinson - Taking The Queen

Evol - Experiment in Fear

Really good Venice style crossover. Super Suicidal sounding and I even hear a little bit of Dr. Know from time to time. If only I heard this when I was 19.

Bruce Dickinson - Tyranny of Souls

I'm not that keen on new Iron Maiden (let alone '90s IM, or even Bruce's earlier solo albums) but this and its predecessor are so good.

"Howlin' Gang" -

Really heavy Garage Rock with parts that sound like East Bay Ray. The second half seems to drag on though.

Master's Hammer - Pad Modly

Still as epic and vibrant as I remember it being. Riffy and rich sounding, pretty distinct from the Norwegian style that developed alongside this. Vocals are great too
