Sunset in the 12th House - Paraphernalia of Sublimation

Some of the prettiest music I've heard in a long time. The album barely ever breaks into any even remotely metallic riffs (though the latter half of this song contains some nice crunchy riffing) but I always suspected that the core Negură Bunget boys had it in them to write something so otherworldly, transcendental and downright shimmeringly lovely. I expect this one to be in my top ten at the end of the year.

Yeah, there are plenty of heavy and power metal fans here.

Deep Purple - Sail Away

This song has to be the "Black Sabbath" for the Dio school of power metal. Great shit.

Indeed. I just dunno if there's much happening in power metal these days that's worth discussing anymore *shrug*

Destrose "The Prologue"

...strange title to predate an indefinite hiatus.

Neige et Noirceur - Hymne I - La grande faucheuse ouvre la marche

Been getting into a bit of Quebecois black metal stuff as of late, with this band and Forteresse being my main focus. Dark, freezing, and kind of surreal, even.

Treblinka - The Sign Of The Pentagram

Killer demo.
I prefer their releases to anything Tiamat has ever done.

Dir en grey - Chain repulsion

Man, the main riff is just so groovy and Kyo's range on vocals is amazing as always.

Protector - Misanthropy EP (1987)

German death/thrash, pretty ahead of the curve as far as I can tell, also containing much black atmosphere especially in the vocals.

A new discovery for me and what an awesome one it is! Modern death/thrash done right. :headbang:

Misþyrming - Söngvar elds og óreiðu

Good album. Maybe not deserving *all* of the hype it got, but definitely some.

Shame this band turned to complete shit after this album.

^ That is a cool album. I never got around to checking out any of their other stuff, but Location: COLD was one of my gateway albums.

NP: Macabre Omen/Ad Infernos - We Won with War/Bloodlust (The Devil's Dance)

Macabre Omen have definitely improved in their ten year hiatus. Ad Infernos isn't very special either. Very much a non-essential split.

Gutslit - Skewered in the Sewer
Brutal death metal with many way mid-tempo/heavy, perfect concert!

Toxoid - Aurora Satanae
Good black metal satanic and misanthropic India with good melody.

Ascension - Mortui Mundi

Goddamn. The last album by Ascension, Consolamentum was glorious in it's scope, destructive power and evocative with it's manifestation of orthodox black metal devotion, with many highlights, but the more I'm spinning The Dead of the World, the more it's unholy capacity is revealed. This is a slow burner - gradual shadows creeping along the wall, with a thick pall of disease and smoke that will inevitably engulf all with it's choking, brooding (and massive) malevolent presence. Outstanding.

Melechesh - Tempest Temper Enlil Enraged

Kick ass riffing and a long, exciting black/thrash metal track. Great album.

Rainbow - Rainbow Rising

Ritchie Blackmore pretty much dominates my top albums list. This is number one, and In Rock is second. Long Live... is somewhere there too.

Sinister - Diabolical Summoning

These guys have been crazy right from the start. The speed and brutality of this album (all their albums for that matter) is insane.

Arvo Pärt - Passio

This is amazing. I've been in a classical music mood for a while now, and this hits the spot. Very minimalist and powerful, with beautiful singing.

:np: Decomposed- Falling Apart

Cult doom/death metal from the early 1990s. Pretty fucking cool.

Liking ye olde Pärt? Check out Kanon Pokajanen, it's one of my favorites of his. Makes me think I should go on a more concerted Pärt binge…

NP: Jötgrimm - Winterschwärze

Some nice spacey 'winter synth' material here. A little more floaty/starry than PdH's Die Festung, but anyone that's a fan of the latter should probably check this out.

Mardelas "Mardelas I"

Just noticed some pretty rad interplay between the guitar and bass on this. Strange how I just notice details like that, even though I've played this well over 20 times now.

Cattle Decapitation - Anthropocene Extinction

This is as awesome as expected! This album is really catchy, but still has heavy as ever. I can see this getting similar/feedback reviews as Monolith did

Symphony X - To Hell and Back

A rock epic in the classic style. Seriously one of my favorite songs they've ever done - the build up, the multiple parts and all the instruments are immaculate.

Perfect track to motorboat Kat Dennings...well, if you get the chance!

Bathory - Blood On Ice

My first love with Bathory. Bought it some 15 years ago and liked it instantly. The muddy sounds just work for its advantage. The Woodwoman still brings tear to my eye.

This new album is insane. This and a six pack of dogfish head is how I'm gonna end a long shitty day in the disc mines.

Orden Ogan "Dark Rain"

This is pretty different to what they're doing now. I wouldn't mind seeing them re-record this one though (hell, they did that to Mystic Symphony and Angel's War).

They're not going down a great road these days. Needs more "Land of the Dead" type stuff mixed in with the PM, rather than just straight PM.

They need more mood/atmosphere, that's what made Vale so great for me.

Its still really weird hearing 90s goth/doom metal tendencies in their early demo stuff though (complete with male/female duet vocals). Old stuff was way more folky too. Mood was somewhat somber/melancholic as well. It was still very much a band in (most likely) their mid-teens trying to find their sound. Sound quality is primitive as hell, but that's to be expected. If I could ever get over my mental stumbling blocks, this one would be a fun one to review.

Exodus - Architect of Pain

Force of Habit is very underrated imo. I don't like the two cover songs but everything else is solid.
