Forteresse - Métal noir québécois

Their new album is absolutely excellent, but I don't think they will ever top this.

Nuclear Assault - Game Over

Music is great and fast-paced but the vocals aren't my thing

Clot by Scour

Very strange to hear Phil doing nothing but harsh vocals. Strange in general to hear Phil in a black metal band but somehow it works!

Deafheaven - Roads to Judah

I like this a lot more than Sunbather. The whole album sounds a lot more nuanced, from the melodies to the texture of the chords to the overall dynamics and pacing of the songs. The vocals, while in a similar mould, are altogether less high-pitched and irritating. The production is quieter, which reveals a more ambient and ethereal feel to the songs. It also means the riffs don't drone and the drums aren't obnoxiously loud.

Destruction- Black Death

The ultimate Destruction song! The fact that this isn't their perennial live closer is a crime against humanity!

Therion - Beyond Sanctorum

Pretty good except for the symphonic stuff, not a fan of that style at all.

A fun album, though I prefer Crystal Logic.

Order From Chaos - At The Gates

Was listening to Judas Priest's "Screaming For Vengeance", the influence on 'At The Gates' is quite audible.

I just listened to that for the first time. It was beautiful, but that would take quite a while to learn! What kind of bass was used on that song?

Theocracy - Wishing Well

Well, I am pleasantly surprised with this! Very promising new song from my favorite modern metal band! Interesting mix of melodic parts and heavier riffing, and from the snippets offered on the preview and this song, I bet Ghost Ship'll be their darkest album. I've been keeping up with Matt Smith's youtube channel for a while and he posted himself jamming to a riff that he came up with and I was hoping it would make it onto an album, and it did! He turned that riff into a Theocracy styled thrash break at the end of this track and it kicks ass!

Deicide - Once Upon the Cross

First listen in probably like seven years or so. Way better than I remember.

I was actually being sarcastic. The joke is that on this black metal album they put a goddamn lame meandering bass solo as the third track.

But to answer your question, I'm going to guess its an 8 string bass. Necromantia actually has a fascinating setup. They use two basses, and only use guitars for the leads. The "guitar" bass is just distorted to all hell. And it actually gives it a doomy Sabbath type of sound. To be honest if you're familiar with old Rotting Christ (which doesn't use that setup), you probably wouldn't be able to tell unless it was pointed out to you.

 I figured you might have taken that angle after skimming the rest of the album. In all seriousness, I did think it was a neat composition. I dug the vibe but it should have been 2 minutes rather than 5. I'd hardly want that in the middle of a black metal album though lol. I guessed it would have been an 8 string because it sounded like he was playing with a pick, strumming more than just the usual 4 bass strings. It's hard to tell on that one though.

Yea, if you're gonna cover a Necromantia song (from that album at least), it should be Unchaining the Wolf (At War). You'll look like less of an asshole.

lol, I can imagine one of those jerks playing a 5,000 dollar Fodera bass with the wristband mute choking it to death while also wearing one of those lame ass gloves playing that song with so much passion shaking his head around like a dick while covering that song. I don't like the song anymore.

 I wasn't even thinking about all that. I just think its a terrible choice for a black metal cover.

Much as I love Fast As A Shark, Boris might be right about this one.

^Tommy Karevik.

Just curious, when it comes to black metal, which album or band has the best bass work? When I think of black metal, I don't think of bass at all, I think of headaches and satan.

I'm glad you agree.

Epica - Immortal Melancholy (acoustic)

This is really cool.

Leviathan usually has some interesting basswork, but I can't imagine you enjoying Wrest's music. There's also Marduk, but I know you don't like them. As far as things you'd (possibly) enjoy, maybe Mayhem's DMDS? Varg does some really cool, eerie bass lines on that one.

Deicide - Once Upon The Cross

Giving this another listen because fuck jesus

指先ノハク - 肴~SAKANA~

All-female math rock (Japan seems to have quite a few of those). Pretty nice bass on this one.

I've noticed lost of Japanese bands have wicked bass work. I really, really need to dig into the Japanese scene some more. I've been jamming to so much Ningen-Isu lately that I've had countless vocal lines that I don't even understand stuck in my head.

Hmm, DMDS was the first black metal album I ever heard and I HATED it, but that was when I didn't even like death metal. I'll give it a shot now that I'm somewhat intrigued by black metal. It was bass that got me into music in the first place, so maybe bass can get me into black metal! Maybe.

Ningen-Isu has pretty nice basswork as well (one of my favorite aspects of them).

I never really cared about bass before I got into Japanese music. And excellent basswork isn't just limited to metal over there.

You know, if a band has boring/lazy bass, it will sometimes ruin a band for me now. Same goes for the drumming.

The best Rush cover band I've ever heard was a Japanese cover band actually. I cannot, for the life of me, remember their name, but they were spot on. The "Geddy Lee" of that band played the bass just like the real Geddy could but he sounded so darn similar to the real thing that it was weird.

and I agree. I love it when the bass player adds that extra dimension to the music.

Speaking of bass, I wish more bands had live bass solos. Patrice Guers does one with LT's Rhapsody and it's awesome.

DragonForce - Strike of the Ninja

One of my favorite DF songs.

I love that shit too! The most badass bass solo I've seen live was this random band at this huuuge Christian concert at our arena in which the bass player, out of the blue, walks up on this raised part of the stage, clicked a distortion pedal, and unleashed this Cliff Burtion-esque monster of a solo. Of all the places to see a bass solo like that. It was metal as fuck. I'll never forget it. On a Telecaster bass too!

Demolition Hammer - Pyroclastic Annihilation

I've been seriously loving this band as of late. So brutal yet so memorable and catchy! The solos rip too, and the drumming is ace. This song in particular is one of my faves on the album alongside Skull Fracturing Nightmare, the title track, and Aborticide.

Carl Palmer ruined drum solos for me, so I just seek out keyboard/bass solos now.

DragonHarp - Let the Dragon Fly

This band just released their first EP this year. If you like Ancient Bards/Rhapsody/anything Italian, I recommend checking this out.

Great album. :headbang:

Darkspace - Dark Space II

Well I'm officially sick of doing my uni homework, so it's time to get claustrophobic in space. This is a fantastic album, but only one I can put on at certain times. It's not an easy listen. But when it works, it works. :)

The Wretched End-Dewy Fields

Interesting cover. I dont like his clean vocals but they suit the song on this ocassion. By the way, this new album has some interesting detailes and its their most atmospheric effort.

Celtic Frost - Monotheist

Different, yet almost perfect. They go through all the moods here, except joy of course. The first two songs are such mental ass-kicking, and it only gets better from there.

"Totengott" kind of ruins the flow of the album but otherwise this one is a beast. :)

Atheist - Jupiter

I can get behind this. A very different monster that was their earlier albums but I think it retains that Atheist aesthetic. I can't imagine they'll record anything else which is kind of a shame but having this as their swansong comeback album sits well with me. :)

I am a huge fan of this album. I love how it flows from the initial fast and dark tracks to the fucking abyss which are the next ones.

And I simply love tracks like Drown in Ashes. The absolutely hypnotic and beautiful female voice sounds like a sweet death. Astonishing.
