@Woolie; I understand that you're a very picky guy when it comes to your musical preferences (and I say that as a compliment). That means I should probably check that Agora band out at some point, if you're gushing so hard about them

I was raised by a music fanatic and massive record collector, I admit to being hard to impress.

Hydrotoxin - Oceans

Not as memorable or engaging as Agora, but certainly above the typical prog metal standards. I like the use of saxophone.

AMOLAD and TFF have an artistry and songwriting level way beyond crap like Virtual XI or whatever. But that isn't very hard.

Depeche Mode - A Question Of Lust

Very catchy, relaxed music. I dig it.

I'm 3 songs into it now and I must say it's not bad. It's a bit underwhelming, but that's just me being picky. I don't quite like Bruce on this one, it sounds like he's straining but it's not an album ruining trait.

Stratovarius — Speed of Light

Man i wish i like Episode more but half of the album is slow and boring, the speedy numbers are awesome though.

Like I said before, I believe most of the vocals on that album are 'live'.

Iron Maiden - Holy Smoke

First time listening to this. Pretty cool!

That album and Nemesis are about equal for my favorite things they've done.

Sonata Arctica - Deathaura

One of their meanest, darkest songs ever.

I love Episode! I actually really enjoy the slower ones too.

@TD I like Holy Smoke too haha I should hate it but I can't help but enjoy it and the rest of the album.

Testament - The New Order

Didn't care for it the first time around, but I like it now. Maybe a bit too much filler, but solid overall.

Definitely a step down from The Legacy IMHO. I know a lot of people love this one though.

Been struggling to fall in love with it but the awkward vocal lines and inconsistent songwriting keep getting in the way. I'd love to know what you're hearing that I'm not.

Gamma Ray- Abyss of the Void

This on the other hand..... :np: :np:

It's definitely less "together" than Awaken the Guardian. I still enjoyed it though. I might listen to again later before deciding whether or not to add it to my mile long "to buy" list.

Samael - Ceremony of Opposites/Rebellion

Will have to hunt down an older, non-remastered version of this at some point. Never got around to doing that.

Thanks to this conversation I'm listening to Monotheist now. To be totally honest I actually prefer the first Triptykon album to this, but I like the variety of songs here, as you said. "Obscured" is the complete highlight for me, though. That song oozes feels.

Catching up on this thread - listening to this again after a couple years. I like it more now.

Maybe its the beer.

Swans - Lunacy

I definitely don't have the energy to listen to the whole album right now, but Lunacy's still one of my favorites off of The Seer.

Sequestered Keep - Longlost

Fucking ridiculous dungeon synth. Totally medieval and magical atmosphere.

Agalloch - To Drown

This is the best song to come out of Agalloch's whole discography as far as I'm concerned. It's their lasting legacy for me.

Edit: The only problem is the whispers  I'm willing to look past that though.

Juuust finished it for the first time! Dude, the whole thing kicks ass but "The Spell Can't Be Broken" is like on a whole 'nother level! That one was really, REALLY good. I also love Badlands and Rest in Pieces. I might have to pick up a copy of this. Been really digging the Metal Church lately.

Rosetta - Au Pays Natal/Sol

Glad I remembered this song. As far as post-metal goes, Rosetta's Au Pays Natal/Sol and Monument are the standard (alongside Dark City, Dead Man by Cult of Luna).

Deathspell Omega - Fas - Ite, Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternum

The new EP announcement got me going on this. Love keeping up with the chaotic, energetic compositions by these guys.

More than your usual stuff? :D

Crystallion - Wings of Thunder

I don't like the vocal lines on Hattin as much as their other albums, but the music is incredible.

I wish I had that sort of luck with PM.

Crystallion - Burning Bridges

The best PM song ever written, IMO.

King Diamond - Give Me Your Soul ...Please

Is the new KD album ever going to come? This is a step down from The Puppet Master for sure, but still pretty great.

Iron Maiden — The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner

One of their least popular tracks but one of my favourite, fast and furious!

Disbelief backed by scientific statistics.

Black Sabbath- Falling off The Edge of The World

I'm just grateful I got to see this and Sign of the Southern Cross live.

Inquisition - From Chaos They Came

Tremendous level of songwriting. These guys are fucking masters at this. The way they layer riffs and leads and use that shamanic, hypnotic repetition while still cramming so many little subtleties in is just fucking brilliant. I can't get enough.

Very good Mortiis worship. Sequestered Keep is kinda eh for me though. If you want to dig into dungeon synth more I strongly advise you explore this channel, however, there are some notable artists which are absent here, like Forgotten Pathways and some of the Voldsom label output.
