Emperor - The Burning Shadows of Silence

I don't normally listen to much Emperor - I can't get into it the same way I got into the other "entry-level" black metal bands. I'm enjoying the song, granted, but I still feel I'm missing the point somehow - I'd venture to say that they're overrated, if I wasn't fairly certain that the it's just me.

Emperor never "clicked' with me the same way their contemporaries did. I enjoy Wrath of The Tyrant and ITNSE sometimes, but that's it.

np:Katatonia - Brave

not as good as Dance of December Souls, but still a damn good album. this song rules

Mayhem - Chimera

It's actually not bad, although I think nowadays my mind constitutes it to be a side-project Blasphemer had while he wasn't doing Aura Noir stuff.

Sentenced - Epic

Man, I wish more bands did this kind of ''throw everything in a blender and see what comes out'' melodic death metal. It's kinda messy and wild but at the same time really keeps things interesting.

Theocracy - I Am

Epic build-up, infectious vocal lines, masterful instrumentation, AND thoughtful lyrics as the cherry on top? Sign me right the fuck up!

Sirius - The Stargate

This album always makes my head spin. Phenomenal, and the symphonic elements actually ADD to the integrity of the music, rather than just act as lazy filler. Just an all-around winner.

EDIT: Also, this was a FREE extra that was included in an online order I made a while ago. SCORE!

Katatonia - Without God

You could basically hear how Lord Seth's rage was building up before he'd release it with that venomous spitting at the end. Amazing.

Enslaved - RIITIIR

Finally giving my a copy it's first listen. When 'Thoughts Like Hammers' started I was thinking to myself that the production sounded miserable, but then I realized my headphones weren't all the way plugged in :durr:

I hate that!

Yeah the new Neurosis is quite fantastic. Reminds me of "Souls At Zero"/"Enemy Of The Sun" played through a "Given To The Rising" filter, with a wee bit of "A Sun That Never Sets" thrown in for good measure.

Yeah, sort of. The bassist and drummer in Serpentine Path were in Unearthly Trance before they disbanded. Plus throw in some Tim Bagshaw from he classic Electric Wizard lineup, and you have a hit.

Bongripper - Satan

Satan Worshipping Doom! What a great fucking album. This is probably my favorite track. Longform devil worship!

Neoplasmah - Sidereal Passage

I was finally able to write down a review for this one, it does deserve some attention. Winds Of Creation mixed with Angelcorpse and a few melodic leads thrown in the mix, really good stuff!

Blind Guardian - And Then There Was Silence 2011

I think they should have remixed instead of rerecorded this song. The original was really clogged and congested sounding, but that was more a fault of the horribly compressed production than anything else. This version strips away many of the layers the original song had and it comes out sounding neutered.

Oh, man, I haven't heard this in ages. I've got this one on CD. I think I'll have to dig it out again and give it a listen. I'll read your review.

Cool band. They do something a little different in the tech-death scene, which is nice. What's going on with them? Seems like they've fallen off the face of the planet.

Empty Playground - Under Dead Skin

Not even the interlude tracks of someone walking between the tracks can detract from the awesomeness of Under Dead Skin. Some seriously catchy death metal with some industrial thrown in for good measure. A great debut album from these guys and I'm keen to hear some more if there is indeed any more albums in the works.

Binah - Hallucinating in Resurrecture

Holy ball-tearing christ this is fuckin' good. No reinvention of the wheel here, though they do indeed have a distinct personality of their own. This is massive, brooding and wonderfully insidious death metal, full of corrosive (and did I mention massive?) riff structures which all flow in a organic manner. The tasteful lead work is understated, and well utilised, and the almost hidden vocal work, ominously surfaces to deliver the horrid sermon. Damn impressive stuff.

Your descriptions are always really good. Have you thought of writing reviews? I think you'd nail them.

And I agree about Binah. Much like Undergang, they don't do anything new, but they manage to do it well. Hallucinating in Resurrecture needs more listens from me (only 2 so far), but I am impressed!
