Deceased - The Silent Creature (Fearless Undead Machines)

Opening song to a longer than fuck concept album about zombies. This song sets the mood and gets some storyline out of the way. Not my favorite on the album but it really does help you understand what you're in for. I remember being so confused by this album about a decade ago. Trying to FORCE it to be death metal. Finally one day I stopped trying to hear what I wanted and just listened. Eureka! It's Iron Maiden with growly vocals and the occasional death/thrash break. So rad.

(Note: I think Surreal Overdose is their best album by a mile. That's the one where they finally figured out how to blend all these disparate influences into one unbelievable package. It was fun watching them figure it out but they have now, completely. Can't wait for the next one.)

Satyricon - Black Crow on a Tombstone

Alright, checking out the Age of Nero album now, only because they play live at a local festival next weekend :P
It works I guess...

By a mile? PFF. Supernatural Addiction and As The Weird Travel On are freaking killer albums! I'm listening to SA right now while wearing my tshirt of the album, it's so excellent.

I was listening to Craven Idol - Towards Eschaton right before. Only heard their new one once and in passing, I should check it out more.

It's too hard to choose which Deceased album is the best. Fearless Undead Machines is a tremendous album with a huge level of songwriting excellence going on, and then the ones after that are all exercises in a more concise, melodic sort of manner... Supernatural Overdose is the most aggressive of them, but As the Weird Travel On is killer too, very cool melodies.

Just listened to The Wayward Sons of Mother Earth from Skyclad for the first time and Terminus just blew my mind. Don't know why it took me so long to listen to this seeing as how I absolutely love the first 2 Sabbat albums.

Yep, by a mile! I just think it's that much better than their other classics. Next in line for me would be As the Weird Travel On. Obviously we both love their most Maiden-heavy stuff. Supernatural Addiction is really incredible most of the way, but ends with Elly's Dementia which I think has to be the worst Deceased song I've heard. That riff just burrows into my skull in the most annoying fashion. Blugh. Wouldn't want it on any album, let alone as the closer.

Surreal Overdose does everything I love from these guys and keeps it even tighter and more vicious than the rest. The fact that they found some way to reconcile Maiden-y parts against Repulsion worship is pretty shocking to me. It shouldn't work but it's a natural sound they've been progressing towards for years. And it helps that Fowley just fucking gets it, man.

Massacre - From Beyond

Like old Death, but with arguably better vocals.

Nothing special, but works as momentary entertainment.

Eruption - Sanity Ascend
I came across this Slovenian band today. They play technical-thrash, sounding somewhat like a mishmash of Helstar and early Testament. Vocals are power-metal-esque and fit in quite well. They're quite a decent recommendation for someone who enjoys power metal or thrash metal.

Henry Flynt - C Tune

damn this guy is something else. gets a bit noisier than i usually go for with this type of stuff but phew this is good
anybody happen to know of some metal that's influenced by minimalism and drone? i know the obvious drone metal but it would be interesting to hear these ideas blended with extreme metal a bit more

Human Fortress - Defenders of the Crown

Only on my second listen of this record, but I think I like it better than the debut. The songs are more immediately catchy. Would still prefer it to be a bit shorter though.

That one is a lot of fun. One of those old PM albums from the genre heyday that shows why it was such a fun, cult sort of thing back then. Jioti Parcharidis is a great singer.

The transitions between riffs sometimes aren't perfect, but the riffs themselves are so damn exciting, it's impossible to stand still!

Walpyrgus - Palmystry

This rules fucking hard. Can't believe the minimal response it got here. Crunchy, volleying, theatrical metal that bursts from the speakers with life.

Morn of Solace: That's awesome and you're very welcome! Call me crazy but sometimes I like to have a little back and forth rather than just dump a journal entry on what I'm playing.

If that's your first Deceased record you've got some work to do my man!

So true when it comes to Deceased! :P

Surreal Overdose is awesome. Fast and cathy as hell.

Iniquity is probably the most underrated death metal band of all time. I'm constantly namedropping Mads Haarlov as an example of top tier death metal vocals, they really ought to be as well known as the classic bands of the era.

Hideous Divinity - Adveniens
Said it before, say it again, right when Hour of Penance started to get stale, these guys got awesome.

Paradise Lost — Dead Emotion

Gothic is probably my favourite death/doom album, heavy as SHIT and Nick's growls are brutal, and the songs are short, to the point and not drawn out needlessly like MDB etc.

Vomitory - Blood Rapture

You just can't go wrong with something like this. It's just over half an hour of riffy and seriously intense death metal that changes up things while still keeping up the energy. Bloody fantastic stuff; really refreshing too.

Vomitory - Revelation Nausea

Pretty much the same thing. And that is absolutely fine.

Mindwork - "Unrecognized Entity"

Been on the look for some Cynic worship lately, and this is doing quite nicely. The clean-ish vocals are a nice touch, something new tech death bands are often missing IMO.

Aktor - The Mover (Paranoia)

Great closer to a fantastic album. The weather is starting to warm up and Aktor is perfect for the summer night air. Poppy, quirky, anchored by some rad riffs and truly killer songwriting. One of the strangest (without trying hard) things I own.

Firespawn - The Reprobrate

Not bad I guess, though Gunther the Undying's statement that "This is death metal I would expect to hear during a commercial promoting the NBA Finals" (lol) is pretty accurate--that is, if they ever played death metal for such commercials.

Vomitory were really good. I like Cut Up but it doesn't have the same bloodthirsty energy like this does.

Gorguts - Considered Dead

A bit of procrastination while at university, haha. Pretty good album, even though I like avant-garde Gorguts better. Riffs aplenty here!

Indeed they were. Even their 'worst', Opus Mortiis VIII, is still a good album. But you're right, those two are arguably their most lethal.

And now for something completely different. How about some synthpop?

Lights - The Listening

Because after 5 consecutive Vomitory albums my neck and ears need a break.

I got into Vomitory when Terrorize Brutalize Sodomize came out, so that particular release will hold a place in my heart, but you're right that they're all pretty lethal. I thought their weakest was Primal Massacre, but you're right that their worst is still pretty good. Need to pick up the debut album at some point.

Metallica - Hardwired...to Self-Destruct

I don't mind this album, to be honest. I prefer Death Magnetic but this one has a lot of cool moments. I agree that the band is long past their best, but they're still alright.

As you can imagine my first was Blood Rapture and I was fucking floored by it. It's mainly the riffs and vocals on that last album not being quite as good as past efforts that put it below the others, because really they're one of those bands - the kind that have weak albums not due to any real flaws but more down to not being as good as other albums.

And yeah their debut is one of their best; I recommend it.

As for Metallica, I like that album more than Death Magnetic. Better production, for one, but also much better performances from everyone, better songwriting and hence many more good songs. It still has some filler-y tracks (don't really remember 'Murder One' for example) but also some real killers ('Spit Out the Bone' and 'Moth Into Flame'). Very impressive stuff; loads of fun to listen to.

I like it quite a bit! It's a bit more boneheaded than some of the stuff they were putting out on 7s in the late 80s. Seems like they scaled back their complexity, but for me that only makes the individual moments of glory hit harder.

It's one that I'll give more spins, so it may grow on me. Currently, I maintain that it's unremarkable. Their next three albums continue in a similar vein, but more refined, and obviously, from The Dwelling onward there was a shift in style which was always rock-solid and sometimes brilliant.
Jonpo wrote:
I've always described the guitars on Envenom as sounding like a small Japanese motorcycle engine roaring through a crowded metropolis.

Now there's a colorful description. Sure does make it sound enticing, a little Akira-esque, in fact.
