Dio - Another Lie

Was just thinking that I don't think there's any vocalist who's voice makes me as happy as hearing Dio's vocals for even a few seconds. Something about them always makes me smile. Not sure there will ever be a voice as massive as his in metal again for a long while.

Great heavy metal, with an old school flavour and manly as fuck vocals. The album isn't out yet, but judging by the quality of this tune, it's gonna be pretty badass.

I love these guys. There's nothing that special about them that'll make them stand out among their peers but they do heavy metal right.

Oh yeah, I was already familiar with them because of their EP and you're spot on. They just know how to play and write a solid tune, with no frills or bollocks. Cool band.

ALCHEMIST - Jar Of Kingdom

Giving this another listen, in anticipation of receiving my copy of Spiritech (which has just been released from Canadian customs—slow bastards thinking everyone's got bombs, or something). Love the weird blend of genres here.

Sinmara - "Shattered Pillars"

I'm not generally a fan of black metal that's this dissonant but I'm alright with this album so far.

Wouldn't say I'm a huge fan, but I've always enjoyed their stuff. 'Paul's Boutique' is usually considered their "classic," of course, but I should try digging into more of their albums.

Winterhearth - 'Speak No Evil' EP (2014)

A surprisingly awesome random find, these guys hail from Newfoundland and play an unabashedly old-school (not "retro") style, roughly equal parts German thrash and first-wave black metal. Not too dissimilar to Sodom's re-recorded tracks on 'Final Sign of Evil,' but actually better IMO. I'm really hoping they come out with a full-length someday, because these 3 songs just seem like a tease.

Sodom - 'Witching Metal' demo (1982)

Speaking of which... Yes, it's damn near unlistenable, production-wise, but literally no one (not even Venom) was playing metal this "extreme" as early as '82. Old-school speed metal at its most vicious and evil, managing to be proto-thrash and proto-black all at once. Not something I'll listen to repeatedly, but its place in history is impossible to overstate.

Magma - Slag Tanz (2015)

Not metal, but latest release by French avant-prog (or zeuhl) band. And really, this is about as metal as Magma gets, with an incredible, slamming guitar line as the main melody in the piece. Have always wondered which metal bands listened to Magma.

Overkill - Nothing To Die For

Diamhea's NPs made me want to try it again, and I'm glad I did. The album (The Years of Decay) is awesome. I like the production and I like the vocals which are unusually playful for the genre. The riffs are killer too, what more could one want.

I fucking love the break past 4 minutes. The riff is incredible and Garm's aahhs are full as fuck (he was like 18 back then? He had an immense voice!).

Behemoth - Furor Divinus. It sounds WAY more powerful than the hyperblasted stuff from Demigod onwards.

Dio- Holy Diver. People like to talk about Rainbow in the Dark and the title track, but there's some stunningly good material here. The pre-chorus to Caught in the Middle (The "...I see it in your EYES!" bit) is just incredible, and makes the chorus itself all the better. Absolutely glorious.

Queensrÿche - I Am I

Upon revisiting Promised Land for the n'th time, I have to admit that it is a protracted, haughty bore that seems to get something of a free pass, sandwiched between Empire and Hear in the Now Frontier. It doesn't even have anything as ear-grabbing and memorable as "Another Rainy Night" or "Best I Can..."

Cruachan - Blood for the Blood God

Great Irish folk/black metal. Cruachan continues down the road it turned on with Blood on the Black Robe, and that's a good thing. Good tunes, nice production.

On face value, one might think that 73 minutes of blackened death metal might be too much, yet Anosognosic Industry of the I just flows so well that you barely feel that run time. This is an effort I believe Weeping Birth won't surpass, unfortunately.

Gorguts - Colored Sands

Really enjoying this comeback album. Took a few listens to get warmed up but I definitely love this now.

The Polygon:

"Metalcore/melodic groove metal" per MA, from Russia. Normally not my thing, but they do have some damn catchy riffs. Plus a guest appearance by Bjorn from Soilwork on one song, for those who might potentially give a shit.

Gleb Poro:

A Finnish band classified as "death/black metal" - which has become somewhat useless as a genre descriptor, since it ranges so widely. In the case of GP they're very melodic and often catchy, in an almost punk rock sort of way, slightly reminiscent of Church Bizarre.

Agatus - 'Rite of Metamorphosis' EP (1997)

Now here's some prime Greek black metal, even if not quite as old school as early Rotting Christ etc. A little faster-paced than RC or, say, Zemial, but still has that recognizably "Greek" style of riffing with the accompanying occult-like atmosphere - think Mortuary Drape, but Greek instead of Italian, if that makes sense.

Cool to see you loving Runemagick, Empyreal. :) Such an awesome band, particularly later in their career.

Fleshgod Apocalypse - Labyrinth

Polarising opinions on this one, but personally I really enjoy it. It took Agony and fiddled around with slower sections as well as their trademark lightning speed ferociousness. It's certainly too loud and bombastic to appeal to everyone, however I like it and await their next one.

Brujeria - Padre Nuestro

I've always loved this band. The Mexican language sounds so awesome when growled over heavy deathgrind riffs. Also, Mexican drug cartels are totally a death metal-as-fuck lyrical theme.

EDIT: Alestorm - Captain Morgan's Revenge

'Ya know, all the people who bad lip this band, I don't think they've listened to them while drunk. They are the most enjoyable band to sing along sloppily after a few drinks to that I've yet heard. It doesn't even matter if you sing terrible, because that adds to the charm!

Yeah, Envenomed was cool, but Invocation of Magick was fucking great.

Blind Guardian - Welcome to Dying

Unbridled, aggressive speed metal...fun as fuck.

The Amenta - Flesh is Heir

I was disappointed in this when I first got it, and nothing much has changed now. The songs are competent enough and they're played with obvious ferocity and drive, but it's ultimately several steps below n0n. I know The Amenta are capable of better than this, and I still await a new album with hopefully more devastating riffs and a more prevalent use of industrial sounds.

Cvltist - Hastur's Invocation

This sounds better than expected for a two-piece bedroom black metal project. A little less echo on the vocals would be better IMO, but then again it's obviously done on purpose, given their influences (Von, Von, and more Von).

Ancient Rites - Galilean

With a new album coming up in February, I thought it would be a good idea to revisit the two albums I possess from Ancient Rites, which are "Dim Carcosa" and "Rvbicon". I know it's quality music and some tunes like "Templar" or "Victory or Valhalla" I come back to more regularly, but yet I find myself rarely listening to these guys, so I'm not even sure if I'll end up buying the new one...

Was just listening to Hellion's The Black Book to refresh my memory of it while reviewing it. I said I'd write a review in another thread, so I just sat down and did it. That album is truly excellent, just as I remembered it. Thing is it just put me on a Hellion binge, so I've just turned on Screams in the Night.

This one isn't quite as good as The Black Book, but it still fucking slays. Might need to review this one too.
