"Drowsiness of Ancient Gardens" -
That Summer

Early/ Mid 90s Darkwave in the vein of Dead Can Dance but very bleak and far more minimal. The album title is especially fitting for the atmosphere it provides.

Some of their musicians later went on to record what sounds an awful lot like a doom metal song:

Gonin-ish - s/t

Sounds pretty killer so far. Worth the absurd amount I spent on it, at any rate.

Ufomammut - Eve

So heavy and so good. It's been a while, need to listen to these dudes more often.

Blue Snow from (1998) Orange Goblin - Time Travelling Blues (2004 Re-release).
Maan, I LOVE this! So much time... and I could, finally, get a FLAC and make my own rip!

Eyehategod - My Name is God (I Hate You)

Magnificently fucked-up. This is the final Eyehategod album I've gotten around to listening to, and it's living up to the hype.

Enslaved - The Dead Stare

Killer jagged prog riffing. This is a great album, probably will be one of my favorites by them in the long run along with Mardraum.

(again) Fanisk - Noontide

Quote:
Fanisk shows a VERY unique style of black metal. And holy shit, it is amazing.

The music here is very different from your standard black metal band, such as Mayhem, Dark Funeral, Taake, and early Darkthrone. Here, we have a very epic, symphonic, and classical approach to the music. Yes, classical.

I can enjoy this and the albums before and after it any time. Basically modern classics in my book. They have a new one coming out sometime, wonder if it'll be any better than their lame last album.

Let me answer that question for you:

Weregoat - Invoke the Black Oblivion

Since I'm on a big Archgoat kick, this seemed worth listening to. It has been a positive experience, though I feel they maybe produced/underproduced it less than perfectly. The guitars could be a bit more gratifying, and the vocals could rely a bit less on reverb. Still, enjoyable atmosphere.

Labyrinth - Mother Earth

An amazing song from an amazing album. More people should check 6 Days to Nowhere sometime...very cool, mellow stuff.

In Shrouds Decayed --- Triptykon

Eparistera Daimones is consistent but relatively less elaboration of the doom aspects of Celtic Frost compared to Melana Chasmata.

Onslaught - Metal Forces

I'm not even going to try to make excuses for why I haven't listened to Onslaught sooner - they're shaping up to be everything I like about dirty-thrash.

Vreid - Raped By Light

This is first band I think of when I think of black and roll. They take what was great about Windir and add a 70s rock and metal twist to it...and it gets more apparent in later albums. I enjoy this band's entire discography.

Vital Remains - Black Magick Curse

Always good to hear something from this band that doesn't follow the Dechristianize/Icons of Evil formula.

I only liked a few Avantasia songs before, but I decided to listen to some of their stuff again and I'm liking most of it.

Lizzy Borden - Red Rum (from Love You To Pieces)

I forgot how great this album is. This one takes me back to the old days. This is my favorite Lizzy album with Master of Disguise running a close second.

No kidding, great band.

Antiquus - Enemy of the People

Kinetic riffs and great, dramatic melodies. Great vocal performance too.

Desaster - battle oath

Damn, I never realized how good Desaster's older stuff was. This is about as catchy as black/thrash can get.

I loved this album back when it came out and I love it still. This is European power metal done right.

Still can't get into their newer stuff, but damn, this one and Lord is Avenger are nasty slabs of old school sounding death metal.

Gonguri - 2014 EP

Korean death/doom/sludge. Highly reminiscent of Coffins but with an extra layer of sludge misanthropy and scathing screamed vocals as well. There's not a whole lot of worthwhile current Korean metal but this band definitely stands out.
