Kongh - Skymning

Very YOB-ish at times. Great song and record though.

Crystallion - Hattin

If you like power metal and haven't listened to Crystallion, you're doing it wrong.

Not a dull moment on this record. 34 minutes might be short for today's standards, but their ability to self-edit and songwriting skills cannot go understated.

Truly a fine slack of old school heavy metal, honest and stripped of all bullshit.

Listening to this is like talking to an old friend, it's a very familiar album despite me not listening to a lot of stuff that's like it.

I wish the vocals were a bit less buried and full of echo but dem riffs yo. Not sure if I like it more than the Demon Bitch full length though.

Tad Morose - Undead, off the album of the same name

Anthrax- State of Euphoria.

Decided to give this album another shot. So far I just finished Be All, End All, which is quite a bit more plainly awesome then I remember. So far Out of Sight, Out of Mind is ok, but not as great as the previous track.

Previously listened to: Atheist - Jupiter

I actually liked it. It's obviously nowhere near the greatness of Piece Of Time and Unquestionable Presence, but I like how different it is from them. Not much jazz going on in it, but they've really amped up the heaviness. The chugging riffs in "Second To Sun" work surprisingly well. The vocals take some getting used to, but overall, I dig it.

Now Playing: Deathspell Omega - Paracletus

Recently, I haven't been able to explore different artists because I literally don't know how to anymore. I've been all over the place for the past few months. But, someone mentioned Deathspell Omega in a thread somewhere, and I remembered that I wanted to try them out. This is really interesting. I'm getting both the atmospheric, "quiet" aspects of Gorguts' recent output, and a more mild Anaal Nathrakh. I'm sure someone is going to point out that I'm talking out of my ass, but that's what I'm hearing, and I like it a lot. Going to buy this one, for sure.

I've always thought that Paracletus and Drought showed DSO cut through all the meandering nonsense of the last two albums and finally produce something that was both chaotic but also satisfying to listen to. I hope their recent radio silence isn't leading to the end of new releases, since I'd love to hear them continue in this direction.

Phenomenally? I mean I guess it's a pretty mainstream-y hard-rock laced heavy metal song, but I didn't hear much that was shallow or pandering about it or anything.

Depeche Mode - Walking In My Shoes

Cool gloomy industrialized pop. Love the syncopation and beats these guys use. Gahan is an ace singer.

Just listened to the Eternal Champion full-length. Good shit.

NP: Inquisition - Bloodshed Across the blah blah blah

This didn't really click with me the first time I tried it out, but so far it's going better. I guess I've tilted my ear more towards the guitars, where they should have been in the first place.

Gonna have to catch up on those trad metal albums that have been getting hype around here. I find myself rolling my eyes at seeing another Phil Swanson fronted project getting all this attention since I think he's brilliant on the first Hour of 13 album but really annoying everywhere else, but I also thought all the praise for Visigoth that came out of nowhere last year was a strange phenomenon but that wound up being an incredible album so hey, I could be surprised.

Kiuas - Reformation
They may have never had a truly great album, but the first two both had a couple great ones each (Spirit of Ukko, On Winds of Death We Ride, Warrior Soul, Across the Snows on the first album; Race with the Falcons, Through the Ice Age, and Child of Cimmeria/Black Winged Goddess on this one), and it sucks that they totally lost their identity on the third album and then just gave up afterwards. Definitely a very unique band, and their tag here of simply "power metal" is such a gross oversimplification on those first two albums. I actually didn't even know they had an album in 2010 until right now, but skimming over the reviews tells me I'm probably not missing a whole lot. Sucks that they streamlined all those off the wall melodeath/black metal influences and just became generic. Odd career choice, but they can't all be winners.

I like Jupiter, as well. I agree that it's not their first two, but it has its own certain charm to it. I remember the vitriol it caused when it was released (six years ago!!!). I can't see Atheist coming out with another one any time soon but Jupiter will be a reminder of what the band was capable of producing in the 21st century.

You've started with what might be their best full-length, and perhaps their most accessible. I'm not familiar with the first two albums, but Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice is a very long beast and not for the faint of heart. Fas - Ite, Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternum is an oddball sort of thing, with severe undulation between loud and soft parts, and the songwriting is quite jilted. Not bad but not for everyone. Paracletus showed what the band can do if they honed in their writing. If you like that I suggest trying their EP Drought.

This needs more listens from me but I like it, too. Nothing will touch Cosmogenesis but this is closer than Omnivium.

Demolition Hammer are ace. Of course they'd reignite your love for thrash!

A Life Once Lost - Hunter

The best album these guys ever did. I like the song structures, and I don't even care that it's classed as metalcore, because the music is actually really heavy and catchy. The vocals in particular convey bile and hate but are easily digestible, with diction being clear enough to follow along. Great album.

Kaltetod - Leere

I usually don't like intros in my black metal (sorry, Quorthon) but Leere's intro actually adds to the experience for me. It's a pretty good album, too.

Good shit man! Honestly, I think DH have almost ruined my love for thrash. Everything else I listen to seems to pale in comparison!

I've been waiting for this a long time, and holy shit does it deliver.

Sanctuary - Sanctuary

I used to tow the party line and think Refuge Denied sucked except for those legendary three songs... You know the ones. But after coming to appreciate Into the Mirror Black more, I revisited the debut and it's not quite as inconsistent as I remember. Still a bit clunky, but the album wins out overall. Pretty much every song has at least one really cool part worth waiting for. There are four distinct tiers of quality among the songs here, and Ascension to Destiny is the only one that's an outright bore. The vocal performance carries a lot of it, but it's so unique and hilarious I don't mind anymore.

Gorefest - Mindloss

Been a while! I usually go for something like False, Erase, or Rise to Ruin for this band, but decided to go for their debut this time around. Really cool stuff. Probably doesn't have the same personality as their later output, but I like it all the same.
