Crass - Securicor
Taking a break from metal and listening to these legends. Come to think of it, my interest in metal grew more from punk than from rock/hardrock.

Saxon - Heavy Metal Thunder

Quite an inconsistent album, but this song and To Hell and Back Again are great. It's the same with almost all their early albums. There are a couple of heavy metal anthems and the rest is basic rock'n'roll. Not bad though. Denim & Leather has Princess of the Night and And the Bands Played On. Wheels of Steel has 747 and Machine Gun. Power and Glory has the title-track and Eagle has Landed. Well, Saxon is more of a live band though.

Ghost - Monstrance Clocks

Rolling Stone magazine are streaming it, accompanied by scintillatingly vague statements like;
"The metal riff, unrelenting drums and periodic bouts of electronica create a sound somewhere between Mastodon and Metallica"

Presumably the drums are unrelenting in virtue of the fact that they haven't even gotten enough magnitude to be relenting drums. Likewise, sure there's a bit of Mastadon in there, but beyond that, I'm fairly sure that Rolling Stone are just citing all of the metal bands they can remember.

Magazine based rant aside, it's a catchy little number.

Bong Goblin - Buddy Waters

Debut EP from a local band, it's pretty interesting stoner stuff with some really fast and harsh elements. Kinda amateurish, but still good.

Bathory - Mother Earth, Father Thunder

Still on my Bathory kick. The viking metal albums just hold so much badassery, I can't get enough.

Lykathea Aflame - Land Where Sympathy Is Air

I don't listen to this album that often, but every time I do, I like it more than the time before. By now, I'm really, really liking it. The snare sound takes some getting used to, and (as one reviewer noted) the lack of solos is a tad disappointing, but other than that it's a damn fine album.

Coroner - R.I.P.

I've had Coroner's first three albums on repeat today. This band was fucking flawless, from the pristine song-sculpting to Tommy's mindblowing guitar finesse. One of the all time greats.

I'm going to do an all-day Darkthrone marathon at some point this week. Their middle-era stuff is pretty good, don't be afraid to venture into the late 1990s/2000s era. I'd consider Panzerfaust their last "classic" though.

Ataraxy - Ethereal Slumber

Morbid, crushing Spanish darkness. Great stuff here, the use of brooding slower segments are seriously weighty, with a mean, burly guitar tone.
