I really always thought Sacred Worlds was one of the weakest tracks on that album...really boring chorus. I don't like ANATO either though so I guess it's kind of an either-or thing with their newest.

Was listening to more Enslaved...this time Ruun; pretty interesting, proggy stuff. Bit directionless at times but never boring. Didn't like the raspy vocals with this kind of music much, but eh, didn't kill it either.

I always really loved A Night at the Opera, it was ridiculous and bombastic but it pulled off the whole ridiculous bombastic thing so well, much better than Nightfall in Middle-earth before it (the fact that a lot of A Night at the Opera's "classical" tendencies came from massive guitar layering rather than synthesizers or orchestra was a plus as well--it was a "metal symphony" rather than "symphonic metal"). And I used "Sacred Worlds" as a point of comparison because it was on the previous album, it was also an opener, and it was also nine minutes long. "Wheel of Time" kicks its ass but it's on the end, rather than the beginning.

Man I love the rawness of this album. The music is catchy as hell too

Celtic Frost - Monotheist

Man, what an album. The first two songs just smash your face. Atmospheric moments like Obscured and A Dying God defend their place very well too and bring perfect balance to this masterwork. And then Synagoga Satanae - probably the best song done in this millenium.

Solitude Aeturnus - Downfall

Bought several Solitude Aeturnus albums the other day, and this is the first to arrive. It's very conspicuously nineties, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Metallica - Only Thing

A combined version of Sanitarium and Orion from the Master of Puppets demo tape. The lyrics are completely different from Sanitarium on the album, as they're about a Satanic sacrifice.

Powerwolf - When the Moon Shines Red

Brought this up in another thread. There seems to be some that find these guys lame. This song and this album (Lupus Dei) is just kick ass. The chorus to this song is just bad ass!

I'm totally unabashed in my Powerwolf love as well. I think Preachers of the Night is finally where I started to tire of their formula, but the three preceding albums are all killer. I think Lupus Dei is actually my least favorite of those three (with Blood of the Saints routinely finding itself my favorite, with Bible of the Beast in the middle), but yeah that song is an absolute highlight for sure. A HIYA HOO! HIYA HIYA HOO!

Anyways:
Turbowolf - Ancient Snake

These guys get described as some mixture as stoner rock/metal and punk, and I'm not sure how accurate that is, since really it just sounds like sweet, energetic stoner rock with boundless enthusiasm and driving guitarwork to me, but I'm loving this album a lot lately. Stoner anything is pretty much never my thing, but these guys strike a chord with me for whatever reason. Basically I think I love them because if you're gonna base your sound and image off getting high, you might as well make it sound like a lot of fun instead of spacey and dull.

If you don't throw the horns during that fucking chorus then you might not have a pulse!!

Wyrd-The Wicker Man (from Vargtimmen part II)

I am revisiting the mid-era of Wyrd, when they still played a quite good pagan/black metal. The "Vargtimmen" saga is quite good and in this second part he started to introduced some doom influences. I find the last albums mediocre, though.

Enslaved - Ethica Odini

Really sweet, svelte sounding prog with subtle guitars and good clean vocals. Interesting this is the same band that made Mardraum a decade prior.

Such a good song.

I've been on a big Nightbringer binge again the last few days... returning to Hierophany of the Open Grave after fully absorbing Ego Dominuus Tuus is quite an experience. Makes me appreciate its more menacing and deliberate approach more.

God Seed - The Wound

I forgot how much I love this album, I'm really glad they didn't go for a straight 2nd wave sound and added those amazing synths. I like this more than anything Gorgoroth has ever done.

^That song is a beast! It reminds me of Prosperity and Beauty. And I definitely agree in regards to the inclusion of the synth on that album.

Taake - Gamle Norig

I'm still not pleased with this album, definitely a disappointment from Taake, but there are elements of greatness. This song recites a poem by Ivar Aasen (creator of nynorsk), and the lyrics fit the sombre and contemplative nature of the music. Like that section after the main riff (1:28 ish) is very epic.

Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult - Chronicler of Chaos (from Nocturnal March)

Ahhhh this is much better. Had to wash "The Wild Hunt" by Watain outta my ears. This was the perfect choice. :headbang:

Megadeth - Last Rites/Loved to Death

This fucking slays. This is one of the older albums that gets regular play from me. Man what I would give for Dave to give us an album of this quality once again.

Umbras de Barbagia - by Downfall of Nur

Wow, this is a really killer album. It's equal parts beauty and mourning. Check this out if you have even the slightest interest in black metal with folk elements.

Ceremonial Oath - Chapter VI: Lords of Twilight

I first heard this album about a year ago just getting into death metal, then kind of forgot about it. Listening to it again, it's a bit better than I remember.

Sorcerer - Dark Ages

Great doom metal with some of the best vocals I've ever heard in the genre. Wailing classic metal style with Candlemass-esque riffing - it's sweet as hell.

Yeah I was listening to that the other day and thinking the same thing. Good band.

King Diamond - Black Horsemen

I believe this is the greatest metal song ever made. I believed it when I first heard it and still believe it to this day. Metal perfection.

Unrest - Grindcore

A grindcore album has to be something damn special for me to invest in, both for my time and money. This one is phenomenal - mandatory for anyone with even a cursory interest in the genre and highly recommended for those that want to hear what all the noise is about. Pure, unadulterated rage crystallized with a cohesive, but still chaotic, wall of sound. Easily one of my early favorites of the year so far, and Unspeakable Axe Records rolls on as a killer label.

Yet another one of King's many seminars on how to write the perfect metal song.

Was listening to: Who cares now?
Currently listening to: Light Bringer - Venus

God damn this is the catchiest, poppiest, most fucking fun metalish song ever recorded. I know this is just the upbeat fun song to close the album and isn't really representative of what Light Bringer does, but it's by far my favorite of theirs. That two minute long solo tradeoff section where all the cosplaying dweebs morph into Dream Theater is so good.

Fucking sucks they went on hiatus (not sure of the exact reason), but at least the band members seem to be busy with new projects. Plus, there's many similar bands over there coming out of the woodwork (Mahatma, Octaviagrace, Loszeal, Scrambled Soul Circus, Around the Nation, Art of Gradation, All Images Blazing, etc).

NP: Siegfried "The End of Eternity"
Love this. Hopefully they'll do a new album soon - its been over a decade since the last one.
