Forgotten Tomb - Springtime Depression

I checked this out because the album title is the same as the figurative meaning I give my username (which literally means "cold spell in spring") and that in turn reflects what my life feels like a lot of time, unfortunately - trapped in depression when everything around me seems bright and cheery. I'd never listened to Forgotten Tomb before, and it's not as melodic as the depressive or melancholy music I usually seek out, with some thundering parts that seemed more rage-y than depressive, but still had good somber atmosphere overall. I'll probably come back to it at least for a little while.

Absolutely genius song. Everything about it is excellent.

Quite Helstar-ish. Quality USPM for sure, not to mention the production is pretty good for a demo.

Darkwoods My Betrothed - Autumn Roars Thunder

Listened their whole discography today. This is a 92% album for me. The minus comes from the clean vocals - they just aren't that good. Fine memories of walking the woods with this on my Walkman. So pagan!

Gorement - The Ending Quest

This could be the perfect combination of Death and Doom metal.
If you're gonna release just one album, you better make sure it's a classic, and that they did.

Great demo! You must be listening to the Mike Soliz version because it's the better sounding of the two.

Pantera - The Will to Survive

This was a demo track that was recorded in 1989 when they still played heavy/power metal. Outstanding song to say the least. Phil was one hell of a singer back in the day. His falsetto was amazing.

Secrets of the Moon - Carved in Stigmata Wounds

After an initial listen many moons ago where this album went in one ear and out the other, I later found a lot of enjoyment out of their latest offering Seven Bells. I went back to this album and now it's really kicking my ass. All the tracks are good, but songs 6-8 are the strongest point of this album.

Liv Moon "Symphonic Moon"

It's definitely not as intense as "Golden Moon," but there's still a lot of really nice moments on it. Honestly, Akane could carry subpar music by herself, but fortunately there's nice instrumental work too.

Not sure which one of those two I prefer. Double Moon has my favorite songs by them, but its also pretty inconsistent. Esp. the inclusion of that drunken hobo on Phantom of the Opera. WTF were they thinking!? I don't hate that song anymore, but I can't stop laughing when that guy opens his mouth.

NP: Vienna "Unknown"

Pretty nice prog with nice basswork. Normally I'm not a fan of fretless bass, but it sounds pretty good here.

Okilly Dokilly - they warned me

The ending makes up for it in my opinion. Akane doing that operatic wailing at the top of her lungs is pretty incredible. Double Moon is inconsistent, but I do like it a lot for whatever reason. So far, Golden Moon is hands down my favorite album. The more technical stuff is awesome, and the simpler songs are really catchy and have some fun twists (like Dance with a Ghost).

NP: 黒夢 "中絶"

Kuroyume's very first single and it's worlds apart from their more well-known pop rock material (which is also really good). I guess this is gothic rock or something; really cool though.

Danzig - Danzig

This record just totally opened to me. It only took an open mind and a few beers. I'm hearing some 70's Priest in the riffs of Am I Demon.

First time hearing this album and I'm floored. Easily the best of their early work.

Despite Mike Reale's passing this still sounds like Riot without a doubt. Modern, classy heavy metal that's just fun to listen to.

Liv Moon "The End of the Beginning"

I'm actually enjoying this one a lot more than I expected. The bombastic symphonics are quite well-done and interesting. Of course, the riffs are still there and there's lots of great guitar solos and even neat bass moments. Might be my second favorite Liv Moon album (behind Golden Moon).

Discovered this label today and submitted several of their bands. This blistering intense wall of guitars has it moments. Sadly, the tape consists of only one more track.

Trenchrot - Necronomic Warfare

Man, this is just some pounding, savage old school death metal goodness. Bludgeoning riffs, some seriously god-tier lead guitar, roaring hardcore-tinged vocals that remind me a bit of Mammoth Grinder and some supremely well-crafted songs. Though there's a bunch of other stuff going on in terms of influences, it's definitely fair to say that if you appreciate, say, Bolt Thrower at all, you will dig the shit out of this album.

Agalloch - The Melancholy Spirit

Revisiting Agalloch's discography today. this band meant a lot to me back when I was really into the metal scene,and they still hold up the same imo. I got to see them last year around this time, They set off the smoke alarms and pissed off the staff of the venue. Good shit.

I've been waiting on this album all year. I had high hopes, and it's easily fulfilled them and surpassed them. This is quite possibly my AOTY.

I never managed to properly get into this one (even though its not bad). That recent best-of reminded me that I should play this album more. Golden Moon and Symphonic Moon got the most plays from me.

NP: Carbonic Acid - カウントダウン

Fuki does some nice vox on this one. Some similarities to Unlucky Morpheus.

Yeah, the only track I didn't really like on that one was the one with the Europe dude. That was kinda lame, but I really liked most of it.

NP: Kekal "Multilateral"

I always held the trio of 1000 thoughts of violence, Acidity, and Habit of Fire as shining examples of high-quality avant-garde metal. Unfortunately, Kekal got way too electronic for my tastes after that and I sort of dropped off. I've been waiting on the new album for a long time (they released most of the tracks once a month; gave them a listen but never anything extensive), but I finally have it and I got to say that it's a really a return to form. The metal is back, the weird electronic elements are there, and everything just works. Hell, even the vocaloid (Luka) tracks are all fantastic, and I normally don't even like that stuff.

Disturbed - Sound of Silence

Wow! I knew David Draiman could "sing" when he wanted to, but this is something else.
Anyways, it's not a good look when the only listenable song on your album is a cover of someone else's.

Liturgy - Glory Bronze

Such good melodies in this one. I've been really enjoying Aesthethica of late.

Dispirit - Funeral Frost

Separation is a pretty interesting demo released this year by the band. I don't like what's going on with the vocals for the most part (and it's not so bad in this particular song), but the music is pretty solid funeral doom dressed in a sort of grimy black metal aesthetic. This has been shaping into a good year for doom metal that isn't stoner in some way.

One of my best finds in awhile (well, last month or two) - they good chance of becoming one of my favorite bands outright.

Saligia - Lvx Aeternae

It's not as strong as Sic Transit Gloria Mundi, mainly because of the vocals, but still very good black metal

Atomic Tornado - Tornado Eve (MCD) (they have a full-length with the same name)

Random purchase without hearing much in advance - turning out to be really good so far. Reminds me of a mix of 時空海賊SEVEN SEAS with a bit of old Edguy thrown in. Some pretty nice bass too.

MATTHEW GOOD - Avalanche

So many classic songs on this album. Title track gives me chills.

Really bad stuff. I read a lot of hyped up articles on this band the other day and was intrigued enough to listen to the EP on bandcamp. Unfortunately it is a real example of a band that are only heard of at all due to their gimmick (and it doesn't even carry across to the lyrics or song themes by the sound of things, just that they are dressed like Ned Flanders). The music itself is insipid and extremely uninteresting.

Cara Neir - Peridot

Bit obsessed with this band at the moment. They effortlessly blend grindcore, real post-hardcore, black metal, post-rock and a variety of other sounds and play like they fucking mean it. Intense stuff.
