Listening to Three of a Perfect Pair from King Crimson and it might possibly be a new favorite from them. Surprisingly fresh and unique take on artsy/new wavy 80s rock stuff. I love their '80s albums. Very underrated and unfairly called crappy. They had a unique sound going on. Do you have the 40th Anniversary one?

Aborted - Retrogore (2016)

These guys never disappoint ... ever. Brutal & fast as fuck yet absurdly catchy. I've seem them primarily as a deathgrind band but they went a little tech on this one. I must say this brief transition has yielded great results. Recommended.

Megadeth- "I Thought I Knew It All".

This is probably the most underrated track off Youthanasia; lots of tasty grooves here.

Jag Panzer - Iron Shadows

In the mood to start a day with some good USPM... energetic like a shot of coffee.

Church of Misery - The Second Coming

Vocals took some getting used to, but the bluesy Black Sabbathy sound is great!

Great Heavy/Doom from Tasmania.

Ayreon - The Day That the World Breaks Down

Hey, this is REALLY good. Tommy Karevik nails his parts and Sammet actually sounds good. Does anyone know if he works with a vocal coach?

In case you're asking about Tommy, he has never worked with a vocal coach. He's entirely self taught which is amazing, considering how good he is.

Within Temptation - Candles (Demo)

This is great. Better than the album version. I love the electric guitars in the demo version and Sharon's vocals.

I was actually asking about Sammet, but I did not know that about Karevik. I hope Kamelot allows him to open up on their next album.

Asia - Heat of the Moment (live)

When I caught them live a few years ago, they really blew me away. It's a shame Wetton passed away.

I like this album, but I didn't love it. I must admit that I need to give it more time and a chance to truly sink in, but I still prefer albums like Goremageddon and Global Flatline[i]. [i]Retrogore still works enough for me to spin it, though. :)

Animals as Leaders - The Madness of Many

I never really gave this band a shot, and the only reason I have this album now is because the metal store in Sydney was playing it while I was there. Ended up picking it up. This is actually quite good! I can't say it's particularly heavy, especially due to the light production, but the music is really interesting. I'll have to pick up their others if the quality of the albums are as good as this.

Suicide Silence - Silence

Finally giving the new album a spin. It's not bad for what it is, but nobody wanted SS to make an alt metal album in the first place... like we get it, ya like Korn and Deftones. That's fine, but we like YOU for blistering death metal and massive sludgy breakdowns, which is pretty much entirely absent. But still decent for what it is... this is gonna be a tough nut to crack.

For me it was third time's the charm, before that I was like "this good but ...eh, I don't know". I've heard Global Flatline off & on & it is quite solid but Goremageddon ... oh man. I can't believe it came out in 2003, such a brutal, unrelenting album. In fact, I'm listening to it now.

Agreed. However, if you are looking for some solid deathcore check out the new Lorna Shore & Aversions Crown. Both bands are closer to (tech) death metal, riff hard & have crafted a distinct sound for themselves in a sea of mediocrity.

I guess I'll just need more time with it. :) I liked Global Flatline almost immediately, and I think that one surpasses Goremageddon, but only by a hair. Haha, yeah, it's already 14 years old but has lost none of its intensity!

Forgotten Woods - As the Wolves Gather

Been in the player since last night. The Curse of Mankind is the ultimate favorite, but this is good too. Maybe in the top 3 of Norwegian black metal bands, besides Ildjarn and Burzum.

Evergrey - The Great Deceiver

Bought my first Evergrey album last week (Recreation Day) and I'm pretty upset with myself for enjoying this. I am not a prog fan at all, but this album has some really catchy songs. Between this, liking the new Symphony X, and new DGM, I am starting to go down a dark path :(

King Woman - Created in the Image of Suffering
Let's see... go-nowhere dull ass doom, awful vocals with no range slathered in enough reverb to drown Schwarzenegger, lots of clean shoegazey elements, repetitive lyrics that probably have some super deep meaning but come off as valueless because the performance is so ridiculously lackluster.... I'll bet you my car that this has a great rating on Pitchfork.

*checks*

*8.2/10*

HA! I'm good at this game.

Shok Paris - Falling For You

Another great 80s band that should have been bigger. Clear, aggressive and emotive vocals, great pounding riffwork and catchy, energetic songs.

Agreed, couldn't make it through one song honestly. Relapse signs anybody these days.
Pitchfork are kind of renowned for peddling pretentious, boring shite as high art butttt to each his/her own, I guess.
It's still watered down shit for hipsters, listen to some (old) Slayer pussies!!!

Yeah, not sure how this is "watered down" - it's just a different style. Certainly better than, say, Job for a Cowboy or something. ;)

I like the heavy wall of sound type songwriting and the droning vocals. Not too bad at all.

I'm not trying too hard to be honest. I'm just giving my unfiltered, honest opinion on how I feel about this particular album & Pitchfork in general. That Slayer reference was me just being cheeky, nothing more really. As I said to each his own, not everyone of us has to like the same things. :)

@Empyreal: I see what you did there! Still, even deathcore-era JfaC > this. :-D

Not liking what Metantoine likes = Trying too hard

But really, nah I just thought it was awful and boring and the droning vocals were unbearable and there was pretty much nothing I liked about it. To compare it to another random female fronted doom band you showed me a few years ago that ultimately is a totally different band, at least Witch Mountain had a dynamic vocalist and some kinetic/mysterious riffs instead of aimless plodding and one-note reverb effects pretending to be vocals.

I dunno, it sucked, I can't wait to not listen to it again.
