Throw me a few. I'm game for trying some out. Believe me when I say that album was my first foray into black thrash now that I have an appreciation for extreme metal. What I just heard was awesome to my ears, so consider my interest piqued.

Queensryche - "Promised Land"

How did 'Ryche go from being a band that could almost routinely create mostly awesome albums for a little over a decade to all but dying three years later?

Check out Nifelheim and Destroyer 666. Both very good bands, especially the latter. But, Desaster are the bomb.

I have heard a lot about Destroyer 666. I'll be sure to give them a shot. Will do the same with Nifelheim, although I can't say I'm familiar with them.

Check out the 3 first albums by DS666, just pure awesome.
And if youy need more Black/Thrash be sure to check out japanese Sabbat (If you haven't already)
My favorite band in the genre.

You need to check out the mighty MEFISTO from Sweden. Their two demos are the holy grail of black/thrash.

@forestcorpse Will do!

@metalistkrieg thanks man, I'll check that out as well.

And I forgot all about Sabbat! The Dwelling is a masterpiece, and I'll probably like it even more now. I have forgotten the other one I heard from them, but I enjoyed it as well.

Shiiit.... I just learned about that. RIP, he wasn't my fave when it comes to bassists, but still. :( I will play Tarkus later.

Funebrarum - "Draped in Silence" - Exhumation of the Ancient :headbang:

I have to say I'm pretty impressed with this release. Devastatingly dark and heavy like their debut album, with their own unique touches. Especially in that sludgy guitar tone (like sewer sludge, and not the genre). Very good EP. I wasn't overly impressed with their sophomore album as I thought they took a more generic Swedish turn away from their guitar tone and mood from the debut. I'm happy to see they seem to have steered back towards the debut with this EP. I wonder if a full-length is in the works soon?

Angra - Fireworks

I don't listen to this album as much as some of their other stuff, but it's really quite good. Lisbon* and Metal Icarus are fantastic songs.

*On a side-note, while in Barcelona, my fiancee at the time (now wife) and I went to this "heavy metal bar" and as we were enjoying our drinks, Lisbon came on the speakers. I was so stoked. That place had stellar burgers, decent but a bit overpriced beer, and the nastiest bathrooms hahaha. Oh and it had a mannequin with an Eddie mask (the popular Piece Of Mind era one) sitting on a toilet with women's underwear draped over the guitar in his hands. I got a picture of it somewhere...

Is that what most people mean when they talk about "sludgy" guitar tones? Makes sense, was always baffled before when people referred to, say, Realm of Chaos's guitar tone as "sludgy".

Gabriel Fauré - Cantique de Jean Racine

Organ music is amazing.

Vredehammer - Ursus

I checked out their first album "Vinteroffer" and was sort of underwhelmed. A couple tracks into their new album "Violator"; which I didn't even know was released in March, and I am pretty impressed. This is some straight ahead, heavy black/death metal that has the best elements of both genres.

Onward - Reawaken

Top notch USPM!!!!! This album is freakin amazing. Killer riffs with fantastic vocals. Their follow up Reawaken is just as good.

Dawnbringer - Nobody There

Still a really interestingly minimalist take on heavy metal. Slow, droning doom riffs and clean, midranged vocals, but the songs are arranged in a lackadaisical way like a mellow folk album or something, without much energy. But it's very affecting and cool.

Rammstein - "Rammstein"

Slow, dark, heavy and sinister is generally a can't-miss combination. That being said, I'll check out the Dawnbringer song noted above now.

Creeping Death - Sacrament of Death

An excellent find through band camp. Nothing special but very well executed. Reminds me of Black Breath.

Riot - Fire Down Under

This album does classic rock better than most classic rock does, but with the badassery of metal.

Dark Forest - Beyond the Veil

This REALLY needed to be instrumental. The vocals get in the way of the guitar work. Otherwise, this is great.

Brain Tentacles - Brain Tentacles

This.. is mind blowing. Reminds me when I was a total nut and only listened to music that was totally wacked out. Digging it big time.

Ajattara - "Hurmasta"

I still find this song and just about any other from Äpäre to be every bit as fresh and exciting now as I did when it was first released ten years ago.

Aureole - Aurora Borealis

Sounds to me like something of a different beast from their debut, which almost felt like a dark ambient record with metal touches. It might be the clearer production - the guitars are much more prominent here.

Great song from a great album! Was jamming to that earlier actually.

I think Daryl put on facebook that they are, but who the hell knows how long it'll be. They seem to have a stabilized lineup now so maybe it won't be another 7 years or so before we get anything substantial from them.

Pallbearer - Foundations of Burden

Goddammit I love this album

Whispered - Metsutan

Oh nice!! I tried this earlier and thought it was really cool but hated the vocals. Now that I'm used to this kind of stuff, it's totally awesome. So many neat riffs and I love the traditional asian schtick. Shoutout to Diamhea for indirectly showing me this through one of his posts 'round here. Forget which one.

Dream Theater - "Voices"

1) "This neverworld that you desire is only in your mind."

2) Prog metal guitarists can do amazing things when they focus on composing actual solos and don't resort to default wanking.

Blind Guardian - Journey Through The Dark

I kind of wish this album had the chunky, distorted rhythms from the follow up Imaginations. I think it sounds too clean and thin these days.

I'm still having the time of my (metal) life digging into Blind Guardian. What a class band that I've been seriously missing out on.

I've known them for so long that any spontaneity has worn off. I've had SFB and most of their others since I was in about ninth grade.

Clutch - Firebirds

This whole record is catchy as hell, but this one takes the cake. Some nice and fuzzy rock'n'roll. Clutch rules.

Clutch is cool indeed. My friend freaking loves them, and from what I've heard they're pretty neat.

:o In ninth grade, all I listened to was Primus and Buckethead  Regardless, I'm happy to be on board the BG train now.
