In Vain - Floating on the Murmuring Tide

The wonders of skillful composition. The whole album is absolutely amazing.

Persuader - Evolution Purgatory

Goddamn it, this is so damn good. The vocalist is actually really versatile, and he doesn't have a high-pitched voice whatsoever. I love power metal even more when the vocalist has a bit of a rasp. This album absolutely rips.

Raspberry Bulbs - How The Strings are Pulled
Privacy (2014)
This album is really great. They’re definitely one of my favourite new punk bands.

"Maniacal Miscreation" by Cerebral Bore

MoT, you should definitely check this brutal death metal band out; it might change your opinion that women should stay away from metal. Simone does some goddamn crazy vocals on this. :headbang: :-D

Jean-Luc Ponty - Mystical Adventures

Time to listen to another classic jazz fusion album by Ponty. Hadn't tried this one yet. Currently in the third track of it. It's good so far, but let's see if good enough to top Cosmic Messenger. But nevertheless, it seems like another great addition to Ponty's already great body of work.

"Valley of the Damned" by Dragonforce

Shit, this is so good! A true rival of Sonata Arctica's "Ecliptica".

Cornigr - Funereal Harvest

Brilliant black metal from Horna's drummer. It might be an unpopular opinion, but his last two releases are better than anything Horna have ever done (except Sanojesi äärelle) imo. And I like Horna, although I feel they are a tad overrated.

Tiamat - Thunder & Lightning

This album has grown on me enormously, becoming one of their best for me! Really worthy of notice is the Gus G solo, he outdid himself on this one: he truly channels Van Halen in his prime!

"Maximum Overload" by DragonForce

Hey, this band is damn impressive. I don't understand the hate for it.
Too much cheese? Maybe, but it's power metal after all.

Not many people really hate them these days actually. That isn't one of their really good albums though. And I'd say something to the 'it's power metal, it must be cheesy' thing, but I made a whole damn thread about that.

Howlin' Wolf - Moanin at Midnite album...perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon reading Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Winter black metal!!! the atmosphere is really cold and dark. I dont know what happened with this guy because he released the album in 2006 and this EP four years later. Its about fucking time to release a second album Winter!

Excellent, excellent album, surely one of my favorites for this kind of atmospheres, and normally i'm not even a big fan of this style.. those keyboards are a dream and the bass playing is unusually strong, We need him back!

I share the love for Sigh and Gorguts too.
speaking of weirdness: Demilich - And you'll remain..

Well, you're by far more experienced in power metal than me so I guess you're right. But I've seen them mentioned in a thread titled "Worst bands on the archives" which was created in 2013. Since then DragonForce have only released "Maximum Overload" which is a kinda weaker album, as you already said (though I'd never label it as 'bad'), so I can't imagine how they might have gained more love from fans. Or maybe that wasn't a general opinion in 2013?

Empyreal wrote:

Empyreal, in his thread about cheese wrote:
It's theatricality. It's over the top displays of emotion and bombast. It's the exaggeration of reality that makes up fiction in the first place. Are we just afraid of our own emotions, so we reject music that is overtly heart-on-sleeve?

I didn't mean all power metal is cheesy. Actually, I think sometimes people simply use that label too often. Should Sonata Arctica be labeled as cheesy for their unexpectedly dark atmosphere from "The Days of Grays"? Or should Powerwolf be labeled as cheesy because of their extensive use of corpse paint in power metal and their lyrics which prove their peculiarity towards dark themes? I don't think so. What's next? Should we also label Archgoat, Acheron, Antestor or Vaakevandring as cheesy for their extreme use of Satanic/Christian imagery? Bullshit. If a band has a certain attitude that doesn't make it 'cheesy'.

But my idea has to end here because I don't mean to derail this thread and because you created another thread especially for such discussions.

NP: "Return in Bloodred" by Powerwolf

Great 'standard' power metal. Doesn't sound as heavy or dark as some later material I've heard from them but great, anyway.

It really is. I get the feeling Colored Sands has gotten some mixed reviews from fans, but personally I think it's very well written and all the songs carry their own. I wouldn't mind this particular direction explored further on future albums, if there are any. :)

Sectorial - Erase and Reborn the Humanity

Very interesting stuff here. It's a mixture of thrash metal and grindcore, but it actually works. The riffs are interesting and can mix thrash and death and black metal styles without losing the feel. The drumming is exquisite and really on point. Occasionally there is a flute to bring forth a more folk feel, but the riffs and drumming are the main highlights here. Think of a mix between Rotten Sound and Misery Index and you might be on your way to describing Sectorial.

Cryptopsy - Whisper Supremacy

Actually really fucking good - it is quite unbelievable how the very similar And Then You'll Beg falls apart completely. This on the other hand is one of their best, and while it doesn't touch what came before, let's just say that occasionally this can just about see None So Vile from a few miles off.

Fuck the haters, man, Whisper Supremacy is awesome. It's blistering, technical, and just chaotic fun. I like DiSalvo's vocals, too. Oh, uh, and I actually enjoy And Then You'll Beg, too, haha.

Sectorial - We Are the Titan's Rising Ashes

What a strange album! Much like the first one, it's a mix of thrash and grindcore, with some fantastic drumming and killer riffs. The flute makes a stronger appearance here, and there's even a melodic instrumental track which is a strange inclusion but it somehow works. Well written, Sectorial!

Well, one reason I don't like ATYB is because DiSalvo goes a bit too far down the hardcore route (even if I am not too averse to hardcore), but my qualms lie with the instruments. They are just a mess, all over the place. As soon as brutal death loses its focus and structure, it all just collapses in on itself. On the whole the genre walks a fine line between 'frenzied chaos' and 'gurgling, tickticktick bullshit'. To my ears, it is very, very easy to fuck up.

You are damn right on Whisper Supremacy though, that manages to stay in the realm of 'organised chaos', and comes across as mightily heavy and pummeling.

Those are all fair enough points. I still happen to enjoy it, though. :) Heavy and pummelling are correct!

Synthetic Breed - Catatonic

Great groovy death metal with soaring, awesome clean vocals and lots of power in the music. You can't help but headbang.

I saw them live last year in a theater in Monza for an instrumental tribute show dedicated to their producer.. all for ten bucks!
jaw dropping show indeed, full of great improvisations and stories about the band :) (and obviously about Demetrio!)
..and yes, their first five albums are mighty..their prowess and creativity was stunning! as you can hear they were deeply into middle-eastern and indian music, thats probably the reason of their originality!

Dreams of the after smashed to dust

Colossal. The main lead break after this line is spine tingling.

They still perform??? Damn I wasn’t even aware of that. Was that a one time thing?
They’re maybe my favourite fusion band to be honest, with electric Miles Davis (esepcially the ’70 and ’73 bands) and maybe the Bill Bruford band. And National Health. Their discography is just always on point. I even like those late albums, and the stuff without Demetrio (RIP to the god). CRA is my favourite album though, thinking of getting a cheap copy of it.

Bill Bruford - Beelzebub
Feels Good To Me (1977)
Yea it’s a fusion kinda day folks.

Leviathan - The History of Rape

I usually prefer Leviathan's ambient material over the strictly metal ones, and this one might be my favorite. Wrest must have had a really inspiring "muse" for it.

^ Ha... yeah, I know that story.

Tad - Infrared Riding Hood. How the fark it isn't on the archives I don't know.

EDITED (for clarity regarding the last point, interview with Tad Doyle)

Moon Kaiser: What’s your favorite Rock / Metal band?
Tad Doyle: Currently, YOB. Previously, BLACK SABBATH and AC/DC.

MK: Who dragged you into listening to Rock / Metal?
TAD: I didn’t have to be dragged. My brother gave me my first metal record and it was the first BLACK SABBATH record when it came out. He gave it to me for Christmas when I was very young. This upset my mother and that made me like the band even more just because of that. I found later that many years of enjoyment and inspiration for me came from this band.

MK: Where in the world you think is the Rock / Metal Mecca?
TAD: Hmm, that’s a hard question to answer. I think that for each person individually the metal mecca resides between their ears and at the very core of our being.

MK: When do you think you’ll get tired of Rock / Metal?
TAD: I don’t think that’s possible for me to ever get tired of rock and metal.

MK: Why Rock / Metal music is so awesome?
TAD: I think that metal embodies immense amounts of power that can be shared with anyone within earshot. I know speaking from personal experience, that the power of metal and rock music as a whole has helped me get through difficulties in life. Metal has given me something to look forward to. Something to wake up to and face the horrors of life that we all have to deal with.
