Leviathan - The Tenth Sub Level of Suicide

I had such an overwhelming urge to hear this. Total USBM classic.

Imaginations is my favorite BG album. I like their other early ones a lot too, but Imaginations is just so unique and heavy and lethal sounding. Perfect blend of menacing heavy riffs and regal melody. Hansi sounds incredible. SFB was my favorite when I was younger but these days I like Imaginations more. Tales from the Twilight World is also insanely fucking good.

Deep Purple - Never Before

Utter classic. Most bands wish they could write a song this good.

August Burns Red - Constellations

Metalcore from my high school days, still fun to listen to in the car.

Inquisition - Vortex from the Celestial Flying Throne of Storms

The mix on this album sounds just about perfect for black metal. Also, riffs for days. I like it a lot, and I'm not much of a black metal person.

I just heard the intros of both and holy crap you are wrong! (kind of wrong with This Will Never End. But Tanelorn still has that psychotic pinch harmonic riffing under the verses). NEXT! But just for a giggle, care to "compare" all of the tracks?

I understand that album is far from good, but I don't consider it a total abomination. I guess I might just have a high tolerance for disco.

NP:
Ihsahn - Arktis

If I were a metal vocalist, I would want to sound like Ihsahn. Great record, just barely missed my TOP 10 this year.

César Franck - Trois Chorals pour Grand Orgue.

Man I'm not sure if it's just the frequency of the organ but this is unusually dissonant for a late Romantic composer. I like.

Tech/ Outsider House with tiny slabs of Ambient thrown into the mix. It's a fun dance record.

It isn't an abomination but I wouldn't rate it above 40-45%, either. It's just a weird mix of death metal and industrial which fails at delivering well both of them.

I like "Abomination of Desolation". It allows me to hear quite a different take on some songs + Demon Seed.

Bruce Dickinson - Freak

Weird that this album is now associated in my mind with the period immediately after Trump won the election, as I was playing it pretty heavily then as I'd just gotten it in the mail. How unfortunate.

Buckethead - Backwards Chimney

Still the all-time best Buckethead Pike. One of my favorite albums of all time pretty much. He struck a whole new level with this one. It's the only one of its kind too.

It's seriously a chill-inducing masterpiece holy fudge muffins. Listening for the first time in a month or so. Sits at the very top of my Big B recommendations.

I slept on Phobocosm a bit but damn if this isn't tight as hell. A definite outside contender for my end-of-the-year list.

I've been listening to this for the last few days now and it's just phenomenal, really top drawer stuff. If Harris has any sense he should release this as an official live album, because the band are playing with total conviction here. As it's a radio broadcast the sound is crystal clear too.

I'm very glad I saw Maiden during this period, as IMO the band were clearly on an absolute peak both in terms of live performance and songwriting.

EDIT: Dear God this really is just incredible. The guitars!!!

Sumerlands - The Guardian

Super neat album. It's kind of a neat way to approach things but I'd say it works.

Desaster - The Oath of an Iron Ritual

Guys, is this what black thrash tastes like? I absolutely LOVE this!!!! Oh my goodness this kills on multiple levels.

I'm wrapping up my 2016 listening for BH's thread and this album just stole my attention.

Also, I tripped across that Brain Tentacles album. THAT was a gem.

Yo, glad you like it. This album is probably my favourite of the year. It's unlike anything I've heard before, but that's because I don't know anything about blackened thrash. Non-stop instensity and hard hitting riffs.

Is it me, or did Sammett sound like a hybrid of Dickinson, Tate, Kiske and Halford in his heyday?

M_O_T you ain't kidding bud

It absolutely rips. I finished the whole thing earlier and it's easily a highlight of the year for me. KILLER stuff. I'm shocked really, I must do some digging into the genre, and the band.

Deathspell Omega - Synarchy of Molten Bones

The intensity is at 11. Such complicated music. It's hard to believe. I had no doubt as to quality but I wasn't ready for this. Only listened to this since it came out.

Jerry Cantrell - "Siddhartha"

Thanks to a post a page or so ago in this thread, I revisited "Siddhartha" for probably for the first time in a few years. Among many other great things in this song, Layne Staley almost appears to be resurrected during the pre-choruses.

wait till you find something from the subgenre that's great. that album is good, but hardly exemplary.
