The Vision Bleak - Into the Unknown

Missed this one last year. It's not an surprise since I'm definitely not on the lookout for gothic metal. And this is some fine piece of metal, at the same time ballsy and riffy, and atmospheric. Love the mid-range baritone vocals as well.

This is some serious cool stuff. I dig the David Wayne-esque wailing and the dark, artistic vibe of this. :)

Yup, awesome band... glad you checked em out.

Flawless song: it was this one that actually made me get Joy Division's music

Solstafir - Love is the devil

Rarely metal, post punk and rock worked so well togheter in a single, straightforward song. Best one on an already great album!

Bolt Thrower - World Eater '94

Hmmm, this is much more dramatic and dynamic than the original. I think I prefer this one, brings out the lyrics best.

Diamond Head - Sucking My Love

An old New Wave Of British Heavy Metal Band that brought more complexity and aggression to their sound, one in which one band from San Francisco would expand on. Lightning to the Nations is one of the best albums of this movement.

I just noticed that the song Atlas Rise takes a bit from this song.

Finntroll - Under Två Runor

Not the biggest Finntroll fan. But this song gets me everytime.

It has this Moonsorrow-ish vibe to it, which can only be a good thing.

Skeletonwitch - The Apothic Gloom

I should definitely check out their earlier albums. Does anyone know why Chance was kicked out of the band? I thought I read that it was drug/alcohol related.

No idea, but I like the new guy much more tbh. Fun fact: Adam was wearing a Revenge shirt when I saw them live, which makes me wonder if he had a hand in the more black metal direction of the new EP.

Khemmis - Hunted

Great doom.

I like this one. The last third of the album picks up considerably but all of it works. :)

Incantation - Mortal Throne of Nazarene

Excellent stuff from an excellent band. Filthy and catchy, all at once.

Cytotoxin - Radiophobia

On the other end of the death metal curve is Cytotoxin, modern and brutal. I really like this one. Plenty of hooks and love the gutturals. Keen for their new album this year.

Those would be commonly held opinions and I agree entirely. I like The Black Album and I think it gets too much shit despite its flaws, but the rock albums mentioned are truly legendary. Both are firmly rooted in rock though; their metallic tendencies are scarce.

I don't think there was ever an official announcement as to why, but I'm almost positive that's why he didn't tour with them shortly before the new guy stepped in and they played an entirely instrumental set. It's a shame because I loved the unique character of Chance's voice. The new guy is a bit more "normal" but he's still very good, and I like that the EP had more obvious black metal leanings akin to Forever Abomination (their best album other than one of my all time favorites in Beyond the Permafrost).

Sepultura - Machine Messiah
I can't stop listening to this. It's so daring and out there. Easily the best Sepultura album since Arise, and the only once post-Max that I can definitively say I like.

I don't hate the album, but I think it deserves some of the shit it gets. I think it holds a fair share of responsibiliry for the 90s downfall and Nickelbackisms of modern rock like Nirvana and Faith No More.

Rigor Mortis- Rigor Mortis

Edit: I was thinking about how if I would review this I'd want to keep it in the 70s, but fucking Mike Scaccia makes me want to give this a goddamn 99.

No way, does he actually say that? That's amazing.

And Mandrake's the blue one right? That one is nowhere near as good as their other stuff is (saying this lightly, as I've still only heard like 3 or 4 Edguy albums.)

Mandrake is the first album where they started getting really first rate.

Excalion - Foreversong

Always a great tune. Love the chorus.

Yes to both. I love Tobi's live albums, because he leaves all of the mistakes in. On the Fucking with F*** live album, he completely fucks up the chorus to Superheroes and starts laughing.

One of the heaviest songs of my childhood. I wouldn't be on these forums if DW4 hadn't planted a love of the metal riff into me as a child.

Mandrake is the album that took me the longest to appreciate, but now it's my favourite Edguy album. By contrast, Theater of Salvation was a longtime favourite for me, but I don't listen to it as often as I used to (probably still my #2 Edguy album though).

It's been a long time since I actually heard Mandrake. It might be the next 'old album I used to have a dl of' that I buy to have officially, sometime soon. I like their next four better but Mandrake is still a classic. Their early albums had some great songs but Mandrake was the first one where they seemed to have their shit together.

And yeah, Excalion are very talented... I've probably talked about them a lot here, but I'd disagree with what you said actually. His vocals are some of the best in metal to me and the songs are excellently written, just no-frills and built on great hooks. The way they use keyboards and those chugging, sort of hypnotic rhythm guitars is masterful - they do a lot with very simple elements.

I've been listening to this album a lot lately. Definitely the best song on the album, and yes, that chorus is stunning. I especially love the "sparkly" outro.
