Dragon Guardian & Knights of Round “桜牙” - 輪廻のウロボロス

Haven't played this too much - the latest Dragon Guardian and Dragon Eyes I took a liking to much faster.

Samael - Blood Ritual

A black metal album for those whom aren't as familiar with this genre or have a higher affinity for others, such as myself. The riffs are everywhere and they are exquisite. Nothing against the hundreds, if not thousands, of black/thrash bands over the years, for that style certainly has its place in my orifices and the cockles of my heart, but just like how there was a window of bands that tread the line between death and thrash in the late '80s/early '90s, this belongs in that same group. Black metal I can air guitar to like a moron? Sold!

Skepticism- Farmakon.

Holy crushing riffs batman! Love the drum production, very cavernous and organic.

Steve Lynch - Gather Up the Devils

Ending song of the horror movie Let Us Prey, which I liked quite a bit. And I like the song even more. Let's fall...

Seasons of the Wolf - Communion

One of the greatest trad metal bands. This song is pure retro, 70s synth-atmospheric stuff...great riff and ominous mood. A perfect band for the season.

Obsequiae - Aria of Vernal Tombs

Now this is the bomb. Very good riffs and songwriting. Super proud and melodic black metal. Like a mix of Sacramentum and medieval music, but with a Greek feel. Amazing.

What do you think of AoVT in contrast to Suspended in the Brume of Eos, MBA? I prefer the latter, myself, though they're both very good. AoVT went a bit heavy on the reverb wash for my taste and lost some of the sharp edge of the debut. Also far too many uncalled-for 'ugh's :P Really cool album regardless.

That was the first time I ever listened to anything from those guys, actually. I'm definitely going to see what the debut is like soon. If it's anything like AoVT, it's gotta be pretty nifty. I don't remember there being any "ugh"s though... gonna have to listen again!

Yeah, I ended up ordering this one, actually. As a drummer, I like how drum-centric it is. Plus the songs themselves are killer. Thanks, Crushed.

Cattle Decapitation - The Anthropocene Extinction

Could be their best album here. Pretty much the same thing you would find on Monolith of Inhumanity, which also kicks ass, but the songs here up the ante in songwriting and melody. Great stuff.

Moonsorrow - V: Hävitetty

It's Moonsorrow for me too, previous poster!! I love their every other album (and demos!), but this hasn't opened for me completely yet. It's like the 7th or so full spinning now. The are some epic parts, but overall it's quite heavy in a mental way. But isn't that also a promising sign on an album; not giving it all away in one listen. I know I'm going to return it soon again.

Hooded Priest - Devil Worship Reckoning - Mrs. Satan
Just made this blind purchase at a record store in Chico while visiting my brother. I just looked at the back of the LP and saw some older looking guys in robes, cheesy makeup, and a double bass player so that made it easy.
This first track has had so many different styles playing through it, very pleasantly surprised! Some high energy NWOBHM riffs mixed in with some epic doom ala Candlemass, and the madness of early Pentagram. What a find.
No reviews for it on the site yet, may have to see to that if the rest of the album is this good.

Deicide - Creatures of Habit

Fucking classic album, this one. Interesting production, very fuzzy guitars without the thickness of the previous albums, but still with the same rampaging heavily triggered drum sound.

Aurvandil-Summon the Storms

At first I was schocked with how raw this new album sonded in comparison to the debut, but I must admit that it has its charm and atmosphere and this song is simply amazing.

Megadeth - Last Rites / Loved to Death

Dave Mustaine at his most vicious. While the guitar work here doesn't match the shred-fest brilliance of Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? or Rust in Peace this still sounds pretty solid.

Damn. This track slays. Celtic Frost worship to the bone baby, with a healthy dose of death metal madness for good measure.

At the Gates - first EP and full length

I shied away from this band until recently, because I didn't like what I'd heard from their most famous stuff, and didn't particular want to investigate anything that contributed to a mellowing of death metal. However, this stuff is definitely not "mellow". By contrast, it's probably more out there and brutal than a lot of the OSDM from Sweden I already listen to. Furthermore, I love Grotesque, and have recently been getting into Skitsystem and Disfear, so maybe I'm just a Tomas Lindberg fan (or think he has great taste in projects). Pretty fucking cool stuff, and looking forward to seeing if I actually end up liking the rest of AtG's discography more than I thought I would.

You'll probably enjoy With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness, not sure on Terminal Spirit Disease. That one was where they started slowing down and using a lot more major-key melodies, but it's a lot more free-form and brutal than Slaughter of the Soul.

I think Terminal Spirit Disease is better than SotS by a mile. I wouldn't put it on for the same vibe as the early stuff and Grotesque but it is very cool, more weird and mournful.

I have The Fifth Moon but haven't listened to it in eons. Should dust that one off again.

The Republic of Desire - REALpolitik

I thought this would be similar to Ad Hominem but it's not exactly. Production is compressed and the vocals are really buried. It's like everything else is trying to fight its way to the forefront. This is certainly going to need a few more listens, but it's not too bad.

Pentacle has always been one of my favorites, but I hadn't listened to them in a long while, i.e until now. Your posts have inspired me to dig out Ancient Death. Severely underrated band

Bruce Dickinson - The Best of

Ashamed I didn't get to know his solo stuff, though I've been a Maiden fan for some 17 years. This is like Maiden without Maiden. As much as I love records like BNW and DoD, I rather listen these songs now.

Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes

Listened to Demilich earlier today, and was looking for other good Finnish death. If it isn't obvious, I'm pretty new at this stuff, but came across this record today, and wow! This is great -- it's actually got a weird, sad beauty to it. Doom-y in parts, and the drumming is totally understated, in a very good way. Love the tone, love the thick production, and especially love how all the songs seem to unfold very naturally, nothing forced, no one's in a hurry, but still heavy as hell.
