I didn't see a thread specifically devoted to metal art so I thought I'd create one. So discuss metal album art, metal photos, etc.

On a personal note, I have a stained glass piece I have to make for a class and I was hoping that I could get some suggestions. I have two months to do it, but I'm not that good at it.

Eddie looks great in stained glass. You don't have to be a Maiden fan to appreciate Eddie.

Looks like others feel the same

Abigor used that picture of the guy on the horse for one of their albums covers, I forget the name though.

Edit: It was for 'Channeling the Quintessence of Satan'

You're right, and I had seen that cover art before but I forgot all about it. I'm not a big Abigor fan, or rather I haven't given them much listening time.

Totally. I'm probably going to use one of his lesser-known Alien pieces for my little project if I get his permission.

He actually did the covers for Celtic Frost's To Mega Therion (which everyone knows) and Sacrosanct's Recesses For the Depraved. And ELP's Brain Salad Surgery, too, though it isn't a metal album.

And Danzig's How The Gods Kill, which was one monster of an album, and the picture rules.

Those are fantastic drawings - especially the first and third. Much respect.

I never understood the fuss over the Cause of Death artwork. It is a well executed piece, but I have always thought that the concept sucks arse. I particularly dislike the large eye that is just hovering there - I'd probably like the piece more if that was gone altogether.

Do you mean digital paintings or manipulating photos together to create a scene or both?

Derek Riggs is a favorite artist of mine. I really like painterly art like some of Megadeth's albums or Iced Earth or art that is dark or overall unique like Arsis, Black Sabbath and others.

Of all music genres, metal has the best artwork. By far.

Burzum's artwork is amazing. Most of it is done by the Norwegian artist Theodor Kittelsen and I just love his stuff. I like a lot of BM artwork, particularly The Cult is Alive and In the Nightside Eclipse. And of course Dawn of the Black Hearts :P

I also admit I like some of the more modern death-metal type artwork. Not CC gorefest type stuff, but some of Death's covers, particularly Scream Bloody Gore are great, IMO.

Merciless Death's Evil in the Night is pretty goofy but I still love to look at it. Most of Ed Repka's stuff is cool, actually.

Great artwork can make a great album that bit more special.

Nobody mentioned Kristian Wåhlin (a.k.a. Necrolord) yet? I'm surprised. He made the godly covers of the first two Dissection albums as well as the Live Legacy album, Bathory's Blood on Ice and Nordland I & II, Emperor's In The Nightside Eclipse (someone mentioned that album already), Ensiferum's albums, King Diamond's Voodoo and Wintersun's S/T.

Anyone here heard of Tony Koehl? Most of his work are some of the most visually arresting covers I've ever seen and the amount of detail in his art is nothing short impressive. These are only some of my favorites he's done.

I think surrealism as a whole is something that fits metal imagery, like Giger, Fuchs, Dalí and so many others.

I'm a big collector of 80's/traditional/heavy/nwobhm stuff, so am real into that sort of art.

my favourite all time album art include Iron Maiden's "Somewhere in Time" for its epic, futuristic feel, and also their live album "Live after Death" which has great color, and nice horror subject matter with eddie coming "a LIVE" and bursting out of a grave, in true 80's zombie fashion.

Im also real into 80s thrash/crossover type graphics with dudes partying and drinking beer. check out WEHRMACHT's album covers especially "BIERMACHT", and also the Municipal Waste album "The Art of Partying" for good examples.

THE HELL PATROL!

Ok...
My point wasn't that digital art doesn't allow you to do what painting or illustration can. Probably quite the contrary is the case.

I see no problem with digital art and I'm getting really tired of people claiming photomanipulation isn't "real art." I guarantee I spend more time on a piece than a lot of painters. There's no problem having a preference and it's fine to not like digital art but I think it's wrong to talk down on the entire medium.

Although I'm not a fan of the album, I love Joachim Luetke's work (not metal, but his work for Sopor Aeternus is amazing as well).

Arthur Rackham has awesome artwork.

Great for Pagan metal covers. My band used some of his images for our debut.

isnt it ridiculous that some people think "metal" is "a joke" when even the art indicates it's clearly more awesome than any other genre.

The first few BATHORY albums have some sweet art. i like epic battle scenes 1700-1800's stuff, like Napoleonic Wars and shit. that shits amazing and intense. BATHORY's BLOOD FIRE DEATH has a good picture, which is kindof like that style. (Although i think the piece depicts an earlier era)

on another note, the author that done all the classic MAIDEN art (Eddie Riggs) is awesome. has anyone seen that "12 Wasted Years" VHS, which has an interview with him? its hilarious. i cant believe such a scrawny, campy, dweeby kid like him is responsible for some of the greatest, most legendary heavy metal artwork. lol. i prefer his shit to their newest covers.

first and foremost Dan Seagrave is, was and always will be STUNNING.

i like many of the artists already mentioned here but let us not forget:

Chris Moyen (Incantation shirts & more, Coffins, Godless Rising etc)
&
Kristian Wahlin (aka Necrolord... tons of stuff hehe)

Putrid these days is doing some wild stuff as well!!!

for digital art i like Mike Hgrubavkanvkabvkack...
