Excluding the obvious (Gallhammer, Warhammer, etc) I'd like to know of some bands that have great Hellhammer like riffs (hell, even the bass sound on Triumph of Death), while not sounding completely like them in so far that they are a clone band (like Warhammer).

Slaughter. Kind of sounds like Hellhammer on crystal meth.

Death Strike - Fuckin' Death

Raw, primitive death/thrash. If you like Hellhammer, you'll like this.

Coffins (Japan) could be right up your alley, methinks.

Patecabra is another death/thrash band with a very raw primitive sound.

By just saying their names that might be stretching it a little. Considering Obituary and even Darkthrone have different sounding albums. Probably Slowly We Rot and Panzerfaust would be better examples of riffs used with direct influence from Hellhammer or even Frost.

Apokalyptic Raids from Brazil are most likely leaning on clone with their first two records. At least riffs wise, different vocals though. The third one has some more of their own agenda going for it. Just thought I would throw it out there if you've never heard of them.

Heretic (the one on Barbarian Wrath)
Goatlord
Dementor (although their sound has a lot more going on than Hellhammer influences)

The fellow countrymen Samael's early works (especially the first album) bear a heavy Hellhammer influence. Check out if you want Hellhammer gone completely black metal.

Darkthrone is more influenced by Celtic Frost than Hellhammer really.

I already own all of Darkthrone and Obituary's back catalogue (bar demos and Obituary's new E.P), but thanks for the input.

alphabetically, a small list of bands that either totally APE the HellHammer riff style or have used at least 2-4 HellHammer/HellHammer style riffs through the years but made it verrrry obvious. i'll put a star by the ones who are shameless in using them to un-death hehehe

Benediction
Cianide *
Coffins *
Divine Eve *
Hooded Menace *
Massacre
Master
Napalm Death
Obituary *
Slaughter (CAN) *
Winter

in my opinion, the band Coffins is essentially the middle ground between HellHammer & Winter

I was just listening to Nocturnal Worshipper for the first time this weekend, and they definitely write some Hellhammer-ish riffs. THey sound a lot like Darkthrone actually, with more of a propensity for changing the tempo often .. so it's not all Hellhammer-like primitivism, but you get some nice "rockin" riffs every now and then and some wild tromolo-picked melody.

Coffins really does have those great Hellhammer riffs, and their vocalist goes "URGH!" as well.

Hellbastard (UK) - Heading For Internal Darkness LP
=> Hellhammer riffs, combined with a lot "Return to The Eve" riffs with the female vocals part. Awesome

Apocalyptic Raids (BRA) - all
=> the best Hellhammer tribute band besides Warhammer, though as Warhammer, they try to progress the riffs and don't do any copying.

Sheer Terror (US) - Just Can't Wait Enough LP
=> and I stress, only this LP. No other stuff from their discography. You can't get closer with the energy and the guitar-tone that this. The vocals are not everybody's taste (hormon-driven bull) but the record reeks of Hellhammer mixed with US-Hard-/Crustcore.

Cianide - Death Doom And Destruction LP
=> damn close Nihilist/Hellhammer riffing all the way through.

Darkthrone - ripping off Hellhammer completely on their Total Death release (The Serpent's Harvest).

Crude Society System (SWE) - 7" 1984 or 1985
Sounding like Satanic Rites demo with lots of Apocalyptic Raids riffs all together in early Swedish Crust. Awesome !!

I highly second Winter - Into Darkness, Divine Eve/Crimson Relic (partly) and Slaughter.

Yes! Imagine Hellhammer if they were 40-something janitors from Queens. Saw them right before this album came out, and they blew my mind, so heavy and dirgy, and a cruddy standout gem in the otherwise musically vacant NYHC scene of the '80s. Desert isle disc material.

[Edit:] And the title's actually Just Can't Hate Enough.

You can use this link from my website, ignore the bits that are in hebrew, just use the band names, the upper part are the originators and forefathers, hellhammer included, the rest are listed via timelines, from the 90's to current bands. three obvious choices in any case are Apokalyptic Raids, Warhammer and Nordic Mist - which are more of a Celtic Frost tribute band:
