Yeah, brutal is often code word for crap. As with black metal, melodic is often code word for commercialised.

Yeah, I got that wrong. :durr: I read it a long time ago, but I can just remember being absolutely fucking disgusted.

Is this a troll post? Sure, Phantom Limb sucked ass, but to deny PxDx are a grind band because of it?

OT: are you sure said band members were not playing devil's advocate, or just being dicks for the hell of it?

No it's not a troll post, I don't believe in doing that sort of thing. I've only heard "Explosions In Ward 6" and "Prowler In The Yard". The former is pointless late 90s emocore, albeit fairly aggressive, the latter is an all out borefest. You could maybe say that it technically bares a slight resemblance to Napalm Death, but it's not what I'd qualify as grind. Then again, I don't listen to much grind dated after 1991.

Anyway, I would hope this kind of ignorance isn't widespread. Working in any art form with no sense of history of how it got to where it is - that's just a recipe for sucking.
Agreed.

I'd also like this please.
Shit...I hope I didn't unknowingly buy their stuff already.

My questions is, if said band thinks those bands aren't Death Metal then what do they think they are? Thrash/Death? Black Metal? Deathcore?

I've encountered this a lot from suburban trendy kids around me. I know a bunch of kids who worship Emperor, dimmu, old Metallica, Opeth, Death(everything past ITP only) These kids have told me that Bathory and Venom never did anything for music. One of them even asked me "what did Mayhem ever do for metal?" The kid who asked me that also cites Ye Entranciperium as his favorite Emperor song. I've heard "Scream Bloody Gore sucks because all thrash metal sucks", "Fuck Kreator, Testament were way more technical than Kreator", "Possessed were just a faster less melodic Slayer rip off"

Personally I think that a lot of the younger bands and fans want to hear music that is overproduced or technical rather than hear anything with emotion of atmosphere.

I'm not sure some brutal death metal bands know what MUSIC is much less death metal. Obituary has rhythm, they don't understand that. It is actually enjoyable to listen to. Obituary isn't just death metal, they define death metal. Brutal death metal can fuck off.

I've heard numerous fans of modern mainstream metal genres (e.g. metalcore, groove, etc) talk about how Iron Maiden and such aren't metal because they don't have harsh vocals. Does that fall under the umbrella of what you're referring to.

Anyone who listens to Caught Somewhere in Time and doesn't realize it's metal is getting metal confused with hard rock.

I find they have no real understanding of what metal is in the first place. It's not all just down-tuned guitars and screamed vokillz, and somehow that is lost on many people.

Seriously guys, get over it. People are always going to ignorant over what has come before. It's the way things go. If you grew up listening to Nile, Hate Eternal etc. then you wouldn't find the earlier, slower death metal bands to be super heavy and brutal, would you? It's dumb but not entirely unsurprising, and certainly not worth bitching about.

Also, I honestly have to wonder if these sort of stories:
Quote:
talk about how Iron Maiden and such aren't metal

are real. I've never heard anything like this in real life, or even as a second hand story from anyone in real life; it makes me wonder if people just post this kind of stuff on the internet so they can join the communal bitch fest/circle jerk.

Sure. Maybe it's the generation gap, I don't know but I too have heard similar accusations.

I've never heard one myself, but I doubt he was just making the story up. That we have never heard one does not mean others could not have, obviously.

I listen to classical music which was made hundreds of years ago and i appreciate it and like it better than any of todays music. I just think it boils down to laziness and not taking the time to explore music.

Absolutely. I was at a party once talking to a guy who claimed to be a metalhead (yada yada usual story) and rattled off a list of deathcore bands and when i said I liked "real metal", he gave a condescending glance and smirk and said, "Oh, you mean like, Dimmu Borgir and stuff.", then proceeded to say that Pantera created metal.

...This thread has made me realise the sad ignorance of modern man.

The band that this thread started around deserve an excerpt from a SYL song.

"You and your band, you fucking suck!
Hell yeah, you fucking suck!"

Faggots like that just insult my intelligence as a human being. I mean, if you think Pantera created metal, go ahead, but don't even try to be condescending about it.

Unfortunately nobody who thinks so would listen to me about this.

this reminds me of an incident which occured about 2-3 weeks ago. i was in the car with 2 friends of mine, i was playing music from my ipod, i played songs from Unleashed, Gorgoroth, and the Marduk live album "Warschau"
One of my friends was digging my music. then abruptly the music turned off and the other friend said he was gonna play what he referred to as "real brutal metal that doesnt suck ass like your shit" This music was.... Dillinger Escape Plan. I shouldve bitchslapped him on the spot but instead i just preceded to make fun of it the whole ride back to our dorm

I was at an overkill show recently, and one of the openers was a band called diamond plate. They played old school thrash and did so very well i may add. and these guys were young, i think one of them is 16.

However, another band played that night. Mostly older guys, and they sounded like a Godsmack clone. and if the situation wasn't Ironic enough, one of the guys in the crowd, he had to have been in his 40s, turned to me and said "they sound like Anthrax, old school anthrax"

So here we kind of have the reverse situation, with he young kids getting it, and some of the old schoolers growing out of touch. I guess it all depends where you are and who you are talking to.

I'd like to add that clearly everyone in this thread seems to have a solid understanding of what constitutes death metal, or at least what classic death metal was. I'm sure there are a lot of scenester/metalcore bands that have no idea what metal preceded them, but I think there's even more new metal bands who grew up loving and listening to classic metal.

So, to answer the first poster's question: I don't think most new metal bands are too out of touch with their roots. There's just the occasional piece of crap band who thinks it must be metal if you headbang on stage.

This is most likely a result of metal elitists trolling listeners of modern metal on YouTube. I can't think of any other reason right now.

I agree with this opinion wholeheartedly. I think metal is growing in numbers, because of its history....

A lot of brutal death metal kids on soulseek seem to think old school death metal is not brutal enough and isn't real death metal. Ive heard people saying early death isn't death metal or early morbid angel. lol

You know, I just got done in a Counter Strike: Source game, and there was this guy who was doing those fucking retarded pig squeals through his mic. I when I asked him what he listened to he said "Job for a Cowboy." To which I replied "Meh, I don't like deathcore much." And then he acted suprised and said "Deathcore?!? They are death metal man!"

I figured it was best not to answer him on that regard and we got to talking a little bit more. Throughout the conversation I discovered that he had never heard the term 'groove metal' before and he thought Pantera was thrash metal. Also he thought that Cradle of Filth and Winds of Plauge were black metal. Probably the dumbest thing was when he didn't know who Dio was....fuck. It was a sad conversation to be involved in so I just left the damn sever and came right here.

I see what you mean, but you can't say that just because they sound like a godsmack clone, that they don't like proper metal.

I guess the problem I have is new bands either sound like clones of older bands, or when they try to be original, it's usually bad (I'm talking about the more mainstream bands here, not more underground ones).

Incantation are far heavier than modern bands even in terms of straight ahead heaviness, not even counting in the whole evil atmospheric aspect. They're an insanely heavy band.

As a whole, the non metal community tend to see metal as fast and angry music. That's why my friends count it as, and there really isn't any getting through to them. Really, when I started out (Nu Metal kiddy) I was the same sort of way, really, you don't get it until you start listening to real metal and enjoying it. When I first heard Slayer I pretty much just scoffed at them, the didn't seem anywhere near as heavy as Machine Head or the like. It takes training and insider knowledge.
